Mafia Lord's Mute Sweetheart

Chapter 161 Injured?

Chapter 161: Chapter 161 Injured?

"What’s wrong with you? Why are you acting so crazy?"

Mateo was coming downstairs when he noticed Rafael standing in the hallway with the strangest expression on his face. His older brother was just standing there, staring at nothing but the corners of his mouth kept twitching upward like he was remembering the funniest thing in the world.

Mateo stopped on the stairs, his brows furrowing in confusion. He had been watching his brother for the last few seconds, trying to figure out why Rafael kept looking like he was about to burst into laughter.

Rafael immediately shook his head.

"Nothing."

Mateo stopped halfway down the stairs, his hand resting on the banister.

"Nothing?"

Rafael nodded.

"Nothing."

Mateo narrowed his eyes, studying his brother’s face.

"You were laughing by yourself."

"I wasn’t."

"You were. I saw with my own eyes."

Rafael looked at him calmly, his expression carefully neutral.

"I was not."

Mateo stared at him. Rafael stared back. For a few seconds, neither of them said anything.

Then Mateo slowly walked down the remaining steps, his eyes never leaving Rafael’s face.

"Bro, you’re scaring me."

Rafael’s lips twitched, just barely.

"I’m perfectly normal."

"No, you’re not."

"I am."

"You look like you just committed a crime and you’re trying very hard not to laugh about it."

Rafael’s expression immediately became serious, almost comically so.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about."

Mateo folded his arms, leaning against the banister.

"Okay." He paused. "Then why were you laughing?"

Rafael looked away, his gaze drifting toward the window.

"Something funny happened."

"What?"

"Nothing important."

Mateo’s curiosity immediately increased. He stepped closer, his eyes narrowing.

"Something happened?"

Rafael nodded.

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Rafael looked at him again, a faint glint in his eyes.

"I’m not telling you."

Mateo’s mouth fell open.

"Then why did you even say something happened?"

Rafael shrugged casually.

"Because you asked."

"That’s not an answer!"

Rafael simply walked past him, his steps unhurried.

Mateo turned around, watching him go.

"Bro!"

Rafael kept walking.

"Rafael!"

Still nothing.

Mateo hurried after him, his voice rising.

"Come on, tell me! What happened?"

Rafael finally stopped and glanced over his shoulder. His expression was calm but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes.

"You’re too curious."

Mateo pointed at himself, his expression indignant.

"Me? Curious? I’m your younger brother. I’m supposed to know these things! You can’t just stand in the hallway laughing to yourself and then refuse to explain!"

Rafael gave him a small smile, the kind that made Mateo even more suspicious.

"Go bother someone else."

Mateo stared at his back as Rafael continued walking.

"You’re definitely hiding something."

Rafael didn’t turn around.

"Good night, Mateo."

"It’s not even bedtime!"

"Good night."

Mateo watched him disappear down the hallway, his arms still crossed.

He stood there for a moment, completely suspicious.

"...He’s definitely hiding something."

Then he scratched his head, his curiosity gnawing at him.

"Now I really want to know."

Upstairs, Rafael closed the door behind himself and finally allowed the smirk to return to his face. He leaned against the door, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

You don’t deserve her, Cedric. And one day, you’re going to realize just how much you’ve lost.

He walked toward his bed, his mood lighter than it had been all day.

Meanwhile, deep into the night, the Evermont mansion was suddenly disturbed by an urgent phone call.

The house had been quiet only moments earlier. Most of the lights were turned off, the servants had already gone to their rooms, and everyone had been asleep.

Then the main telephone rang sharply through the silence.

When no one answered, Jenna received the call. She had been in her room, still awake and she answered with a frown, wondering who was calling her in the middle of the night.

However, hearing what the person on the other end said, her eyes widened.

"What?"

Her expression changed almost immediately.

"What happened?"

She listened for a few seconds, her face becoming pale. Her free hand gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles whitening.

"Hospital?"

Daisy, who had been sleeping upstairs, was suddenly jolted awake when her bedroom door opened. The harsh light from the hallway suddenly spilled into her room.

"Daisy!"

Jenna’s voice was urgent and almost frantic.

Daisy blinked sleepily and sat up, still trying to understand what was happening. Her mind was foggy and the sudden brightness made her squint.

"What are you doing sleeping at a time like this? Get up!"

Daisy looked at her in confusion. Her eyes darted around the room, trying to make sense of the situation.

Jenna grabbed her arm and pulled her out of bed. Her grip was firm, almost painful.

Daisy quickly gestured, asking what had happened. Her hands moved frantically, the signs disjointed with worry.

"Your husband is in the hospital."

Daisy froze.

Her sleepy expression disappeared instantly. Her eyes widened and her heart seemed to stop for a moment.

Cedric? Hospital?

She immediately reached for her phone but Jenna was already pulling her toward the door.

"We’ll talk on the way. Come on!"

Daisy hurried after her, still wearing the clothes she had slept in. Her hair was messy, and she hadn’t even had time to properly wake up. Her feet were bare but she didn’t notice the cold floor.

As they hurried downstairs, Daisy’s mind became filled with questions.

What happened? Was he seriously injured? Had there been an accident?

She remembered the argument they had had only recently and despite everything between them, anxiety immediately tightened her chest. She couldn’t simply stop caring because their marriage was falling apart.

When they reached the car, Jenna opened the door impatiently.

"Get inside."

Daisy climbed into the back seat. Her hands were trembling slightly.

Jenna followed and immediately told the driver to leave.

The car sped through the quiet streets, the headlights making way through the darkness.

For several minutes, neither woman spoke. Daisy sat with her hands tightly clasped together, staring through the window at the passing streetlights.

She finally looked toward Jenna and gestured again.

What happened to him?

Jenna’s expression remained tense, her jaw tight.

"They said he was found injured and brought to the hospital."

Daisy’s heart dropped.

Injured?

Her fingers tightened around each other, so hard that her knuckles turned white. She swallowed hard, her throat dry.

Jenna noticed her expression but didn’t say anything. She simply stared ahead.

The rest of the journey passed in tense silence.
