Chapter 156: Chapter 156 I am ready to fulfill your wish
Daisy lowered her eyes for a moment.
No. Not everyone wanted that. At least, she didn’t.
She had never wanted someone simply because she was lonely. She didn’t want a body beside hers just for the sake of having one. She wanted a connection. Someone who would understand when she couldn’t speak. Someone who would notice when she was uncomfortable without forcing her to explain. Someone who would sit beside her when she was having a difficult day and simply stay. Someone whose presence made her heart feel safe.
That was what she wanted. Emotional intimacy. A connection that couldn’t be measured by physical closeness.
Daisy slowly looked back at Cedric.
He kept talking, his voice calm and measured, as if he were discussing a business arrangement.
"I know I told you that my heart belongs to Jessica."
His expression remained calm, almost detached.
"But that doesn’t mean I can’t give you something."
Daisy’s eyes became even duller.
He doesn’t understand.
For all his confidence, Cedric didn’t seem to understand what love actually meant. He believed love was something a person could separate into different pieces. One woman could have his heart. Another could have his attention. Another could receive whatever he considered her needs.
But love didn’t work like that. You couldn’t force someone to love you. You couldn’t demand affection. You couldn’t decide that because you were married, another person should accept whatever you offered. And you certainly couldn’t replace genuine affection with physical closeness.
Daisy’s fingers curled slightly around the edge of her sleeve.
She thought of how easily Cedric spoke about Jessica. How naturally he said that his heart belonged to her. But what was love if it made him completely blind to the person standing right in front of him? What was love if he could watch Daisy being hurt and still think only about what she might need physically?
Her thoughts suddenly stopped.
Something strange flashed through her mind.
A man’s face flashed in her mind. It was blurred, almost completely hidden in darkness. She could only make out the outline of someone standing in front of her. Tall and familiar presence. He was looking directly at her. There was something in his eyes. Something she couldn’t understand.
Daisy’s breath caught.
Who...?
For one strange second, the image felt real. Her heart gave a sudden, unfamiliar, uncomfortable beat.
Then it disappeared.
Daisy blinked rapidly. The room was exactly as it had been. Cedric was standing in front of her. No strange man.
Did I imagine that?
She pressed her fingers lightly against her temple. Maybe she was simply tired. Maybe everything that had happened lately had finally started affecting her mind.
"Daisy?"
Cedric’s voice pulled her back.
She looked at him.
He was watching her with a slightly puzzled expression.
"Are you listening to me?"
Daisy blinked once more. Then she slowly nodded. Her thoughts about the strange face disappeared into the back of her mind, at least for the moment.
Cedric continued speaking, completely unaware of what had just happened inside her head.
"You can’t expect me to fall in love with you while I can fulfill your needs..."
Daisy’s eyes remained fixed on him, her expression unreadable.
"But we’re married." His voice became quieter. "And I think we should at least be able to understand each other’s needs."
Daisy stared at him for several seconds.
Then, she shook her head.
Slowly, she reached into her pocket and took out her phone.
Cedric watched her with a puzzled expression, his brows drawing together slightly. He had expected her to gesture, to sign something, to try and explain herself the way she always did. But she didn’t.
"What are you doing?"
Daisy didn’t answer.
She opened the notes app and began typing. Her fingers moved slowly at first, but once she started, the words became easier to write. She paused several times, rereading what she had written, making sure she was saying exactly what she meant. Her thumb hovered over the screen, then she typed another sentence, then deleted it, then typed it again.
When she finally finished, she turned the phone toward him.
Cedric frowned. "What’s this?"
Daisy simply held it out, her arm steady, her eyes fixed on his face.
Cedric took the phone.
His eyes moved across the screen.
At first, his expression remained neutral. Then he read the first few lines. His eyebrows slowly drew together. He continued reading and the farther he went, the more his expression changed.
The message was simple, but every sentence seemed to hit him harder than the last.
Grandpa James arranged our marriage because I was alone in this world and I had no one I could depend on.
I know you love Jessica. I know your heart belongs to her.
So I am ready to fulfill your wish.
I will give you a divorce.
You can marry Jessica.
I don’t want alimony.
And I won’t tell Grandpa James about what happened between us.
Cedric stopped reading.
His eyes remained fixed on the screen.
For several seconds, he didn’t move. His hand holding the phone was steady but something in his posture had shifted. The confidence that usually radiated from him seemed to falter.
"...What?"
The word came out quietly, almost as if he was speaking to himself.
Daisy stood silently in front of him.
Cedric looked at the phone again, as though perhaps he had misunderstood something. He read the message a second time. Then a third. His grip around the phone tightened, his knuckles whitening.
"You..." He looked up at her. "You want a divorce?"
Daisy nodded firmly.
There was no hesitation this time. .
Cedric stared at her.
He had spent so long assuming Daisy wanted to hold onto their marriage because of the money, the family name or the position she had gained by becoming his wife. He had convinced himself that she was like everyone else, that she wanted something from him, that she was just another person trying to take advantage of his wealth.
Yet here she was, offering to walk away without asking for anything. Not even alimony and she was willing to keep everything that had happened between them secret from Grandpa James.
Cedric’s expression became complicated. His blue eyes flickered with something unreadable.
"Why?"
