Chapter 143: Chapter 143 Did you miss me?
One of the maids noticed her leaving.
"Ma’am! Breakfast is ready."
Daisy smiled apologetically and gently shook her head. She pointed at the clock on the wall and then toward the gate.
I’m getting late for work, she gestured.
The maid nodded, believing her explanation.
A few minutes later, Daisy was already sitting in the taxi on her way to the laboratory. She rested her forehead against the window, watching the busy streets pass by.
Soon, she arrived at work.
As usual, she greeted everyone with a warm smile.
Ace waved enthusiastically from across the laboratory.
"Morning, Daisy!"
She smiled and waved back.
Mona walked over carrying a stack of files. Her sharp eyes immediately noticed Daisy’s tired expression.
"You look sleepy," Mona said, tilting her head.
Daisy laughed awkwardly before rubbing one eye. She signed quickly.
I didn’t sleep well.
Mona raised an eyebrow. "Bad night?"
Daisy nodded, not wanting to explain further.
After changing into her lab coat, she got busy with work. There were samples to analyze, reports to review and experiments to prepare. She threw herself into the tasks, hoping the familiar routine would distract her.
However, the whole day passed and she didn’t see Alessio. Not once. Not in the hallways. Not in the common areas. Not anywhere. He usually came to inspect work.
For the rest of the morning, Daisy tried to focus on her work.
She carefully recorded data, checked the samples twice, and even helped Ace with another experiment. She answered questions with small nods and written notes.
By lunchtime, she couldn’t help wondering if Alessio was alright. Had he fallen sick? Was he busy with another branch? Or had something happened?
As soon as the laboratory’s lunch break began, Daisy quietly left her workstation.
"I’ll be back in a few minutes," she gestured to Ace.
Ace nodded without asking any questions. He simply smiled and waved her off.
She walked through the long corridor leading toward the executive offices. The hallway was unusually quiet. Normally, assistants and managers would be walking back and forth but today it was almost empty.
She stopped outside Alessio’s office.
After hesitating for a few seconds, she gently knocked.
Knock... knock...
"Come in."
It wasn’t Alessio’s voice.
It was Rafael.
Daisy bit her lower lip. So... he’s really not here. A hint of disappointment flashed across her face.
Still, she pushed the door open.
Just as she had expected, only Rafael was inside. He was sitting behind the desk with several files scattered in front of him. His sleeves were rolled up and he looked like he had been working for hours.
The moment he looked up and saw Daisy, his entire face brightened.
"Daisy!" He immediately stood up. "Come in, come in."
Daisy smiled politely and stepped inside.
Rafael folded his arms dramatically. "I’ve been away on business for weeks." He narrowed his eyes playfully. "...Did you miss me?"
Daisy’s eyes instantly widened. She looked at him as if he had asked the strangest question in the world.
Can... can a boss ask something like that?
Seeing her stiff expression, Rafael burst into laughter. "Hahaha! Relax." He waved both hands. "Don’t look so frightened. You can think of me as your big brother." He smiled warmly. "I already have a girlfriend, so don’t worry. I don’t have any strange intentions."
Only then did Daisy visibly relax. She let out a small sigh of relief.
Rafael couldn’t help laughing again. Poor girl... She really thought I was flirting with her.
Daisy smiled shyly before slowly raising her hands.
Thank you.
Rafael blinked. "For what?"
She lowered her gaze. Then she signed again, much more slowly.
...For saying I can think of you as my big brother.
Rafael’s smile gradually faded.
Something about the way she signed those words made his chest tighten.
Did... she never have an older brother? Yeah, he almost forgot she was the only child of her family.
He smiled gently. "Then it’s settled. You can think of me..." He pointed at himself. "...and Alessio as your big—"
Before he could finish his sentence, his phone suddenly rang.
Rafael glanced at the caller ID.
"Mateo?"
He answered immediately. "Yeah?"
The cheerful expression on his face slowly disappeared.
"...What?"
He straightened unconsciously.
"When?"
"...Is he okay?"
His tone became serious.
Daisy’s smile faded as she watched him.
The longer Rafael listened, the darker his expression became.
After nearly a minute, he finally spoke. "I’m coming."
He ended the call and immediately grabbed his car keys from the desk.
Seeing Daisy’s worried expression, he forced a small smile.
"Sorry, Daisy. I have to leave right away."
He hurried toward the door before suddenly stopping.
"Oh..." He looked back at her. "Were you looking for Alessio?"
Daisy nodded.
Rafael sighed. "He’s... busy with something important today." He didn’t elaborate further. "I’ll tell him you came looking for him."
Daisy nodded politely.
As Rafael hurried out of the office, he couldn’t help shaking his head.
Good thing Mateo called when he did... Otherwise I was one sentence away from introducing Alessio as Daisy’s ’big brother.’
He almost laughed at the thought.
If Alessio ever heard that... He’d probably throw me out of the window himself.

Meanwhile, a black SUV sped down the highway, its engine roaring as it cut through traffic. The city lights blurred past the tinted windows but no one inside paid any attention to the scenery.
Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was suffocating. No one dared to speak. Not even the bodyguards sitting in the front seats. They exchanged nervous glances but kept their mouths firmly shut, their eyes fixed on the road ahead.
"Bro... Bro, take a deep breath."
Mateo sat beside Alessio, watching him anxiously. His light green eyes were filled with worry as he studied his brother’s rigid posture.
"Please... just calm down."
Alessio didn’t even seem to hear him.
His jaw was clenched so tightly that the muscles along his face twitched. His green eyes burned with rage, dark and dangerous like a storm about to break. His hands were curled into fists on his knees, the knuckles white.
"F*ck..." He slammed his fist against the leather seat. "F*ck!"
The entire car fell silent. Even the driver’s shoulders tensed.
