Chapter 34: Danger
Chapter 34: Danger
"Her weight is in a safe range, and according to what you told me, she is eating well too. I also performed a few tests to check whether her responses to certain stimuli were slow, but no, her responses are quite accurate and rather sharp."
The doctor’s words eased some of the tension from Jean’s shoulders before she asked, "Then why isn’t she moving around much? I heard children remain quite curious at this age."
The doctor nodded. "Yes, they are. But they are also quite perceptive about their surroundings. I believe you have recently changed your residence, which might be making it take her a little longer to become familiar with her new surroundings. Additionally, you need to motivate her to move around. Holding her in your arms all the time might be contributing to her reluctance to move on her own. Give her opportunities to explore and move around by herself in a safe environment."
The doctor paused for a moment before adding, "You could also consider taking her to a childcare center or a playgroup where there are other children around her age. Sometimes, seeing other children crawl, walk, and play can encourage a child to imitate them and become more interested in moving around herself. It would also give her a chance to become more comfortable around other people."
Jean lowered her head and looked at Elara, who was currently playing with a small cube.
What the doctor said was true. Not only her, but Kai as well, always kept holding her. Maybe that was why they hadn’t given her enough encouragement to move around by herself.
Jean discussed a few things with the doctor before finally deciding to leave.
Thankfully, the doctor assured her that Elara wasn’t suffering from any illness or condition that required immediate attention.
A wave of relief washed over Jean as she stepped outside the hospital. With her phone in hand, she immediately began typing a message to Kai, letting him know that everything had turned out fine.
She considered calling him, but knowing he was probably busy with work, she decided against it.
Instead, she started walking toward the café he had mentioned earlier when a voice suddenly called out from behind her.
"Hey, Miss."
Jean turned and found a man standing there with a grin stretched across his face.
Her brows furrowed. At first glance, he looked like some kind of goon. However, his next words caught her completely off guard.
"You know Kai, right? I’ve seen you with him before."
Jean’s eyes narrowed. "What do you want?"
Her grip on Elara tightened instinctively as she pulled the baby closer to her chest.
The man tilted his head, his grin widening.
"You see, your man has been avoiding me for some time now. So, I guess I’ll have to use you and that babe in your arms to bring him before me."
Jean’s expression hardened.
She slowly backed away, unwilling to turn her back on the man. But after taking only a few steps, her back collided with someone.
She froze.
Another man was standing directly behind her, wearing an equally nasty grin.
Jean swallowed nervously as she glanced from one man to the other.
She was surrounded.
....
"You really are one hell of a guy, rushing Mark when you haven’t even sent out notices to everyone yet." Kai snickered at the contractor.
The demolition wasn’t going to happen anytime soon, and certainly not before the other people who still had offices in the building had been given enough time to collect their belongings and vacate the premises.
The man merely shrugged.
"See the effect of rushing things? At least a few floors are clear now."
Kai rolled his eyes.
Because of this damned bastard’s impatience, he had been forced to leave Jean alone at the hospital while Elara was being checked. It was especially irritating considering all the promises he had made to her just yesterday.
Shaking his head, Kai decided it was time to leave.
He turned away from the contractor and began walking out.
Taking out his phone, Kai was about to call Mark and assure him that everything was fine when he noticed a few messages from Jean.
{The reports came out normal.}
{She is perfectly healthy, but a few measures need to be taken to increase her physical movement. I have gotten a plan prepared.}
Kai exhaled a long breath of relief.
Only to freeze the very next instant.
His entire body locked in place.
His eyes widened as he stared straight ahead, every muscle gradually tensing.
His heart began hammering against his chest, an ominous feeling settling over him. He couldn’t explain it, but something deep within him was screaming that something had gone terribly wrong.
Something had happened.
Something involving Elara.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
His breath caught in his throat.
And then, as if the thought itself had clawed its way into his mind, he heard it.
"She is crying."
