Chapter 33: An emergency
The next morning, they woke up early since their appointment with the pediatrician was scheduled for ten.
"Are you sure you can come along? You were awake until quite late," Jean asked, worried that he might be pushing himself a little too hard. There was not a trace of exhaustion on his face, but he had still been working until late.
Kai reassured her. "Trust me, I’ve worked far more than I have recently, and I’ve had more than enough rest. Besides, this is our first visit to the doctor. I want to be there with you."
Despite neither of them openly admitting it, they were both nervous. So far, Elara had appeared perfectly healthy, and they had been quite strict about monitoring her meals as well. However, there were times when she seemed to lack energy, and her reluctance to move around much had begun to concern them.
Since Jean had not taken her to a doctor in the past few months, this visit would also serve as a routine checkup.
"Come on, our ride is here," Kai said when he received a call from the driver.
Speaking of cars, the one gifted to him by the system was supposed to be transferred to his new home. However, Kai had already decided to either sell it or purchase a new one using the reward he had recently received.
He had checked the price list that morning and found that he could get a decent minivan for around fifty thousand.
’Saying "just" while talking about fifty thousand... Yeah, I really have changed.’
Even so, he knew he would not hesitate for long before making the purchase. There was no way he could have his family riding around in a sports car.
So yes, he would deal with that matter soon. Relying on taxis was becoming a little inconvenient, after all.

As Jean stepped down the stairs, Kai locked the door behind them.
He soon followed her and opened the car door, allowing Jean to get in while she carried Elara in her arms.
Since bringing the carrier along would be difficult inside the car, Kai had folded it and was carrying it in his pouch.
’An inventory would be a nice reward sometime, System.’
He sounded greedy even to himself, but having a dimensional pocket that could function as storage would be incredibly convenient.
Soon, the car left the residential area and headed toward Parker’s Lane, where the hospital was located.
"It’s a surprise we got the appointment so soon," Jean muttered softly. "I had to apply a week in advance just to get a date last time."
Kai shrugged. "Thanks to Mark, actually. He has a few connections here and there. Remember back at the supermarket? Terry actually knew Mark, not me."
Jean was taken aback. "You sounded so confident back then."
Kai grinned. "Intimidating someone only requires that much."
Jean smiled faintly and looked down at the child in her arms. "Hear that, baby? Daddy lies sometimes too."
Kai looked flustered. "Hey, that’s foul."
Jean giggled at his reaction and hugged her baby a little closer.
Kai could only sigh before smiling as well.
The driver could not help but notice their quiet exchange and eventually remarked, "It’s rather rare to see such a sweet little family living together these days."
Kai rubbed the back of his head. "Right? I’m a lucky man."
Jean narrowed her eyes at him. He was far too nonchalant about accepting the idea that they were actually a family, casually allowing others to misunderstand their relationship.
’But I never refute it myself, either.’
She simply chalked it up to the hassle of correcting other people’s assumptions.
The driver and Kai exchanged a few more words before they finally reached their destination.
Kai took out his phone to pay, only for the driver to stop him.
"Don’t pay that bill. I’ll give you a thirty percent discount. Here, pay using this instead."
He handed Kai his own phone along with a new bill.
Kai was surprised by his generosity. "Thank you, old man."
Once he had paid, he helped Jean out of the car and carefully settled Elara into her carrier.
The little one looked around at the people passing by, unusually silent and visibly nervous.
Kai felt troubled seeing her like this, but Jean quickly reassured him. "Don’t worry. I’ll take care of her."
Rather than slinging the carrier over her shoulders, she held Elara close to her chest and began humming a soft tune.
Hearing her mother’s familiar voice, Elara’s tiny fist slowly loosened, and she let out a soft, contented groan.
Kai’s shoulders relaxed as well.
Just then, his phone buzzed.
He took it out and found three missed calls, all from the same person who was calling him again at that very moment.
Mark.
Confused, Kai answered, but before he could say anything, Mark’s hurried voice came through.
{Kai, they’re tearing down the building and gave us an hour to take everything out of the office. Hurry and get there.}
Kai’s eyes widened. He glanced at his watch before asking, "When did you receive the call?"
Jean grew worried as she listened to him. There was clearly something wrong.
{Half an hour ago. Go there and take all our belongings. Fuck, those assholes couldn’t have given us at least half a day.}
Kai took a deep breath before replying, "I’ll do something."
He disconnected the call and turned toward Jean. His face barely concealed his concern as he asked, "Jean... something urgent has come up. Can I leave you here and come back in an hour?"
Jean nodded but still looked concerned. "But what happened? Is everything fine?"
Kai reassured her, "It’s just that our workplace is being taken down, and we left a whole lot of our things there. I need to retrieve them."
Jean understood the urgency and nodded. "Go ahead. I’ll get her checked and wait for you here."
Kai smiled faintly. "If something comes up, call me. And if you get bored, there’s a café just across the street. You can go there and wait for me."
Jean reassured him, "I’ll be fine. Just make sure you travel safely."
Kai nodded before briefly looking down at Elara.
For some reason, his heart felt strangely restless, but he assumed it was simply because of the sudden situation at his workplace.
He leaned down and kissed Elara’s head before turning around and walking away.
