Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking

Chapter 231: Beep, Mission Issued

Jane Lancaster sighed silently to herself.

’What’s the point of snitching? Anyone could guess that Caleb Lowell wouldn’t regret it.’

’They’re the main characters, after all. Their love is tortured but deep! How could Caleb Lowell possibly deny his own impulsive actions in that moment?’

’Sys, what’s Gordon Dawson’s deal right now? Has he lost his mind? Is he really trying to seduce me?’

Gordon Dawson’s appearance last night was too coincidental. The man was a careerist through and through, a pragmatist from a humble background who would stop at nothing to climb the social ladder.

He wasn’t interested in women, but he would play along when necessary, possessing the heart of a playboy.

The wealthy heiress Pauline Shaw was righteous and earnest—she was his one true light.

When they got back together years later, it was initially a part of his deliberate plan for revenge.

The way Yara Yates had suppressed him had filled him with a bone-deep hatred. He got close to Pauline Shaw just to toy with her daughter and utterly trample Yara Yates’s pride.

But without realizing it, he had already fallen for her, developing deep-seated feelings for Pauline Shaw.

After teaming up with the main villain to ruin the Shaw Family and take revenge on Yara Yates, he offered to keep Pauline Shaw as his mistress. After a period of their signature tortured romance, he went mad looking for her when she ran away.

Eventually, he had a change of heart and secretly joined forces with Caleb Lowell to take down the main villain!

No matter how you looked at it, their relationship was dramatic, epic, and worthy of a ballad.

Jane Lancaster had wondered if he was approaching her intentionally, but the fight last night had been brutal, with every blow landing hard. It was one thing for Gordon Dawson to get hurt, but those thugs had been seriously injured. The look of terror in their eyes as they stared at him in the end made her wonder if she was just being paranoid.

After all, so many people hated her, it was impossible to say who might have sent them.

Now, she was sure. Gordon Dawson had hired that group of thugs.

Gordon Dawson was a deep schemer and meticulously planned his actions; he probably hadn’t let the thugs know he was the one who hired them.

Neither side had held back during the fight. Gordon Dawson had been especially vicious, which was what made the whole act seem so incredibly real.

"You..."

[BEEP. Mission issued: Go mad with jealousy after watching the video, then seduce Gordon Dawson to make Pauline Shaw taste the bitterness of betrayal.]

Jane Lancaster froze for a moment as the system’s mechanical voice echoed in her mind.

It was the first time she had ever received such a specific mission from the system.

But when she saw the words "five million for your retirement fund" listed as the reward, she was instantly tempted.

’Sys, you’re really handing out freebies, huh? No problem. Mission accepted!’

Jane Lancaster got into character in a split second. A twisted expression crossed her face as she lifted her arm and threw the phone.

With a loud SMASH, the phone shattered into pieces.

Gordon Dawson was stunned. That was his phone!

But seeing Jane Lancaster get up and walk out, he couldn’t spare a thought for his phone. He quickly scooped up the broken pieces and chased after her.

"Watch out!" Seeing a car approach, he quickly pulled Jane Lancaster back.

Jane Lancaster stood on the roadside, seemingly having calmed down. She looked up and gave Gordon Dawson an intensely provocative smile.

"Are you into me?" she asked, yanking on Gordon Dawson’s tie and forcing him to lower his head.

"Why else would you betray Pauline? Do you think I’m better than her?"

Gordon Dawson: "..."

He was ecstatic. Jane Lancaster had finally dropped the act and was showing her true colors!

He loved this kind of flirting—it was wild. But maybe a little too wild. He was being choked and couldn’t breathe!

"You... Let me go..." He couldn’t get the words out and desperately tried to signal to Jane Lancaster with his eyes.

Seeing Gordon Dawson’s face flush red from lack of oxygen, Jane Lancaster couldn’t help but tighten her grip...

A minute later, Gordon Dawson was bent over, coughing violently. ’She really is as dark and twisted as they say,’ he thought.

Jane Lancaster looked at her own bandaged hand and felt a pang of regret.

If not for the pain in her wound, she really would have let him know what it felt like to be on the verge of death.

"So, talk. Why did you do it? Are you into me? Planning to betray Pauline?"

"What do you think?" After catching his breath, Gordon Dawson could finally speak. He flashed a smile that he believed was wickedly charming.

"Not answering my question directly means you’re after something else." Jane Lancaster’s expression suddenly soured. "Do you really think I’m stupid enough to fall for your act?"

Gordon Dawson was dumbfounded. Why wasn’t she playing by the script?

"Stop! Don’t go!" Seeing her about to walk away again, he lost his patience.

"Yes, I like you. From the first moment I saw you, I couldn’t get you out of my head. Happy now?" He slammed his fist against a lamppost in frustration.

Jane Lancaster: "Really? I don’t believe you."

Gordon Dawson reached for his phone, then his heart sank again as he remembered it was shattered.

"I sent you a text, warning you that Caleb Lowell’s investigation was leading to Zach Miller," he said, rattling off a phone number.

The number belonged to a relative of his.

Jane Lancaster put on an expression of sudden realization. "So that was you. If you knew about the video, why...?"

Gordon Dawson laughed. "Because I don’t think you did anything wrong. It was just a fight. If anyone dared to cross me, I’d break their legs. What’s that little video of yours?"

He moved closer to Jane Lancaster. "Aren’t you furious? They condemn you over such a trivial matter, each one of them pretending to be an incarnation of justice, spouting sanctimonious crap. Be with me, and let’s smash their hypocritical faces together, what do you say?"

A flicker of hesitation crossed Jane Lancaster’s eyes.

Gordon Dawson watched her patiently. He was full of confidence; he’d never failed when he made a move. How could Jane Lancaster not be tempted?

Besides, by snatching him up, she wouldn’t just be getting revenge on Caleb Lowell, but also on Pauline Shaw. She would never pass up such an opportunity.

"Fine." Jane Lancaster nodded, then her tone shifted. "But I have a condition."

Gordon Dawson: "What condition?"

"I’ll tell you when I’ve thought of one. For now, take me home," Jane Lancaster ordered directly.

Gordon Dawson smiled. "As you command."

There would surely be more tests and clashes, but that was fine. He was willing to play her game.

Once she had a taste of the immoral thrill, she would fall deep into the trap he had woven and become putty in his hands.

「Aethelgard」

Within the Sanctum, a nebula glittered brilliantly.

The Red-Haired Priest chuckled. "Tsk. Weren’t we supposed to be fleshing out her character? But she’s just as greedy as ever. No principles when money’s on the line."

Several white-robed attendants trembled. "Lord Priest, you can’t just do that. It violates the agreement!"

"I’m just handing out a little bonus. See? The mission-taker is quite happy," the Red-Haired Priest said dismissively.

"But Lord Number 3, he..."

"Number 3 is just too rigid. This is what the people want! The masses love a thrilling plot. We priests are the divine hands that manipulate fate."

The attendants didn’t dare to speak again.

To be fair, while Lord Priest Number 14’s own power was average, every story world he handled had exceptionally high viewership, and the Star Power investments were always impressive.

Although his methods drew mixed reviews, this Lord Priest was indeed a master of manipulating hearts, ensuring that the vicious villains met miserable ends, providing a finale that always satisfied the crowd.
