Chapter 2034 Poison Review
Chapter 2034: Chapter 2034 Poison Review
— Kat —
Ramor showed up, but only for a few seconds. He stumbled into the room as if he was drunk, slapped down a bunch of papers and then vacated the room while yawning. That yawn combined with the lack of alcohol smell when he was around implied he was just tired. Kat wasn’t too worried… until Lin informed them they should probably fill out the report forms. This turned into an annoying issue.
It wasn’t the information, it was just that there was a lot to write down and it had been an age since Kat had needed to seriously use… well anything to write things down. The fact that she needed to use an ink pot and quill for the writing only made it worse. Hedera didn’t need to write much down, simply going over a few things quickly. She was also much more used to a quill. Lily didn’t have an issue either because she was able to use magic to write out her report for her.
Kat pouted in Lily’s direction after Lily had finished her own recap of events. Kat wasn’t even half way through her copy. Heck, Kat might not even be a quarter of the way through depending on how much info she wanted to put on paper. Instead of helping though… Lily had just laughed at her. *Really? No help for your girlfriend? You want try to save me from these hand cramps?*
[Considering I don’t think you CAN get hand cramps anymore, not from writing anyway… no. There’s also the fact that this is a pretty minor thing… and its honestly just kind of funny? If you were more serious about wanting help then maybe I’d do something but it feels more like helping you skip out on chores?]
Kat continued to pout, which Lily enjoyed. Apparently Kat looked adorable when pouting and it was a bit of revenge for the many, many times she’d forced a pout onto Lily’s face. Kat made a mental note to ease up on Lily a bit… before considering the idea for a little longer and realising that Lily’s pouting face was far too cute. *Hmm… yeah if I had to fill out a bunch of paper in order to see Lily being adorable more often I’d fill out a whole lot of forms.*
[You know I can hear you right?]
*And? I think my lovely girlfriend is adorable when she’s embarrassed or pouting at me. What a shock. I’m sure you’ve never considered I might think such an outlandish thing. *
[That’s a lot of sarcasm there.]
Kat shrugged as she continued to write if this was the price for her behaviour… well it was an easy one to pay. Just a little annoying. Perhaps if they were pressed for time she’d ask Lily for help properly, or her girlfriend would volunteer but Ramor wasn’t around for the moment so they had at least some time.
Kat had most of her report done come Ramor’s entry to the room about half an hour later. Kat could right quick quickly once she got used to the quill, but was limited by the fact she needed to dip the thing back into the ink bottle. Plus, writing too quickly just added holes to the paper. She still made excellent progress, there was just a lot to write down. Ramor didn’t seem interested in rushing her at all either. When he stumbled into the room, it was while holding a giant pot of coffee.
He took up one of the empty chairs and looked over Hedera’s report for a bit before moving onto Lily’s far more extensive one and drinking big swigs of coffee from the jug. It was still quite hot, and Kat was sure that were Ramor weaker he’d be burning his mouth for the privilege of drinking it. Ramor did seem to return more to normal after about half of the pot was drunk though.
With his return to sanity Ramor looked at the coffee pot far more warily. “Hmm… on the one hand, that tastes like shit. On the other hand… I might need more coffee…”
“Why not use better coffee if it tastes so bad?” asked Hedera.
“Because I don’t like coffee at all, but sometimes I do need it. So I get the strongest stuff I can. Means I need to drink less,” explained Ramor.
“And you’re still drinking a full pot?” asked Lin.
Ramor nodded slowly. “I guess? I clearly wasn’t in my right mind when I took the whole thing, but because I’ve taken the whole thing it’d feel bad if I handed it back. Not the most sanitary to have others use it after drinking right from the mouth of it. Probably only needed half, maybe less.”
Lin nodded along as if she’d solved some big mystery while Hedera sighed and rested her face on the table. Kat just kept writing. Though… *Does that make much sense? Surely someone of his Rank would be more resistant to disease?*
[Right but other people at lower Rank won’t be and that’s the worry.]
*But would he even have anything to pass on? Surely his body would fight whatever it was off properly?*
[Hmm… I don’t know? It could be that his body doesn’t need to fight certain diseases because they know they can’t affect him? So they don’t even try? Maybe? Could also jut be a habit from when he was weaker.]
*Fair.*
“Kat, I know you’re not quite finished yet, but I’ve seen the other two reports. I just want to double check a few things,” said Ramor. Kat handed over the paper and Ramor nodded after flicking through it a few times. “Alright I think I have an idea. We can probably get Appoline into the station on a few serious charges.”
“Really?” asked Kat. “So one of those poisons was dangerous?”
Lin laughed, clearly having some idea of what those charges probably were. Ramor was shaking his head at the question. “No I’m afraid… not quite? We’re actually able to bring her up for violating zoning laws, workplace health and safety violations and perhaps a few other things. Those two are the big ones though.”
“What?” asked Kat, very confused. Lin’s laughter just got louder.
“If you find it so funny YOU can explain,” Ramor jabbed.
Lin pulled herself together so swiftly you had to wonder if the laughter was fake to respond. “I feel like, as a basic secretary that’s not really my place.” Ramor responded with a flat glare. “Fine…” Lin turned to Kat. “Alright, so the main issue here, from what I can guess, is that the potions laboratory is actually in the unused mine. Depending on how the area has been zoned…
“That means that either, Appoline is performing unsafe alchemical experiments in a park. Which is illegal. OR she’s using a mineshaft for those same experiments. Which is also illegal. Furthermore, if she built the thing herself she might also be up on charges for building in a mineshaft at all. Then there’s the fact that there’s no proof of proper safety procedures and no certification which is all, also illegal…”
“Really? That’s what’s going to get her… zoning laws?” asked Kat slowly.
Ramor nodded. “Technically, the poisons might also be illegal, and far more serious charges but… it doesn’t matter so much. Proving she has them in her possession is a much greater pain. What you’ve got here, is something we can super quickly verify without getting caught and if we can get a second team to confirm that the lab is where you say it is?
“Then suddenly, that’s an open and shut case for basically any of the things Lin listed. From there we can make it into a bigger investigation and search for proof of other things. Think of this like… the easy crack in the armour we can use to pry open the rest of it. It’s because they aren’t as serious that we don’t need to be as rigorous with our proof. For the poison, just as an example, we’d probably need a sample of that poison to use as proof for the investigation… AND an example of it being used in a crime, and a rough motive before we could arrest her.
“For zoning issues? We just need a second party to confirm it then we can immediately arrest her and send a third team off to properly catalogue everything. Ostensibly to ensure that she’s not breaking any MORE zoning or workplace safety laws but in this case it’s just an excuse to prove she’s been up to other things. I… honestly didn’t expect it either. Steel might not jump on this sort of thing… but me? This is a great chance to poke at the thieves guild without being too heavy handed. Plus, it’s hopefully getting us closer to finding the murderer. Speaking of, Lin, do you think she’s the one? With the new information?”
Lin rubbed her chin a few times. “No… or at least, I’m not willing to make any more definitive statements then I have previously. There’s a lot of circumstantial evidence but I don’t know if it’s any more definitive then it was before.”
