Cooking Gourmet Meals in the Apocalypse

Chapter 62: The Enemy of My Enemy Is My Friend

Chapter 62: Chapter 62: The Enemy of My Enemy Is My Friend

"Gotta take a shit?"

"I’ve been constipated for five days and finally got the signal. Keep an eye on things for me!" With that, he climbed down from the truck’s roof and headed toward the building.

There were toilets in the building, which was better than going outside.

Chen Xing saw this as a golden opportunity. She was at the rear of the truck convoy, perfectly shielded from the men’s line of sight.

She quickly placed her palm on the body of a truck.

Instantly, the cargo inside came into her view.

It wasn’t anything particularly special, but they were all common, everyday items.

She went down the line, touching each truck.

There was white rice, glutinous rice, brown rice, black rice... all sorts of grains in large quantities, and a good portion of it was organic.

There were two whole trucks of purified water, one of mineral water, one of medicine, a truckload of soybean oil and olive oil, various seasonings, dried fruits and vegetables... even quilts and clothes... all brand-new, with the tags still on.

Chen Xing noticed that the supplies in these trucks were incredibly comprehensive and clearly sorted. It didn’t look like they were for personal use; rather, they seemed packed and ready for shipment.

Just as she was nearing the end of her "harvest," someone shouted, "Someone’s escaped! Get them!" The shout was immediately followed by a gunshot.

Chen Xing glanced ahead. There were still four trucks she hadn’t emptied.

The man who had gone to the bathroom was already running back, pulling up his pants. The shout had come from him.

He was still over two hundred meters away. Chen Xing picked up her pace.

By the time the man on watch returned to the truck area, Chen Xing had finished collecting everything and slipped away into hiding.

The entire plaza was now in an uproar. Everyone was awake.

"Who the fuck escaped?" A man in his forties with glaring eyes stepped out of an RV in the middle of the convoy.

He was of average height and slightly overweight. His square, jowly face was covered in brutish flesh, the kind that scared people on sight.

Chen Xing: ’...’

She recognized this man.

In her past life, she had seen him in a video.

In the video, seven or eight bound people were kneeling on the ground while he held a gun, smirking viciously.

He had a different air about him then, as if he were thoroughly enjoying himself.

"Boss... the two men we caught yesterday escaped."

"How did they escape?" Pang Guang’s eyes swept over him.

The man who had run over to report shuddered in fear. He pointed to the man who had been on watch on top of the truck and said, "He was just going to the bathroom when he saw it. The two of them jumped out a window. He only saw their backs. The brothers have already gone after them."

"Useless! Can’t even watch two people!"

Chen Xing: ’...He’s the boss?’

’That’s not right!’

’In my past life, this man was just a minor steward in the Migratory Clan.’

She had no time to think it over. She was already backing away to avoid being discovered.

There was a large building behind her, and she ducked inside.

By now, the sky was beginning to lighten. The enemy was busy trying to catch people, so it was a good time to hide.

Not long after Chen Xing hid in the building, she heard footsteps.

They were cautious, as if terrified of being discovered.

Chen Xing: ’...Don’t tell me the two escapees hid in here too?’

’What a pain in the ass.’

"Brother Xiao, they’ll probably find us soon, right? What do we do?" Ding Yiyu’s voice was laced with worry. Fearing discovery, he kept his voice to a bare whisper.

But Chen Xing’s hearing was too good; she heard every word clearly.

Moreover, she immediately recognized the voice.

It belonged to one of the two men from the beginning of the apocalypse, when she was hiding in a closet and leveling up.

’As they say, the enemy of my enemy is my friend!’

Chen Xing temporarily categorized the two as allies.

"We should be able to buy some time for now," Brother Xiao replied, also not daring to speak loudly. "Your friend Xiao Ru is still in their hands. We have to rescue her!"

In fact, Xiao Ru had been part of their escape plan, but they hadn’t expected to be discovered and were forced to flee first.

"Thank you, Brother Xiao!" Ding Yiyu was grateful that Brother Xiao was still thinking of Xiao Ru at such a dangerous time. "How are we going to rescue her?"

Brother Xiao: ’...’ He definitely wanted to save her, but he had no idea how.

The two had reached the top floor where Chen Xing was hiding. They considered it for a moment and decided not to go any higher.

Although Chen Xing had let Hao Wenli and the other woman suffer a bit, she still needed to get them back.

After all, they were her key to learning more about the Research Institute.

Even if she managed to break into the Research Institute herself, she probably wouldn’t get any useful information.

Before the two men came any closer, Chen Xing took a backpack out of her space, along with a few bombs, two automatic rifles, and some ammunition.

’Though I might not necessarily need the guns.’

’If I just show up saying I’m here to rescue someone without any preparations, they’re not stupid. Why would they believe me?’

Once she was ready, she deliberately made a small noise.

"Someone’s there..." Thankfully, Ding Yiyu didn’t shout. He just tugged on Brother Xiao and stared grimly toward a door up ahead.

Brother Xiao was slightly calmer, but he was just as tense.

Tense or not, they had started to adapt to these apocalyptic days. They gripped their knives, ready to fight to the death.

Since she had already made a sound, Chen Xing trusted they wouldn’t scream. She stepped out in front of them.

Even so, the two men couldn’t help but jump in fright, their knives lashing out.

"I mean you no harm!" Chen Xing immediately declared, showing friendly intent.

"Who are you? Why are you here?" Ding Yiyu watched her defensively, not daring to let his guard down for a second.

"The people with me were captured. I’m here to rescue them." Chen Xing had no intention of admitting Hao Wenli and the other woman were her friends.

"By yourself?" Brother Xiao was skeptical.

However, he could also be sure that Chen Xing wasn’t one of the Migratory Clan.

’If she were one of them, she would have just yelled for help.’

"Yes. But I have weapons!" As she spoke, she readily showed them the contents of her backpack.

The two dumbfounded men: ’...Those are heavy weapons.’

They looked up at Chen Xing in unison.

"Don’t worry about where I got them. Just tell me, is this enough to rescue people?"

The two men: ’...It’s more than enough!’

"It’s enough, but there are so many of them. Are we sure we can get everyone out?"

"If we coordinate, rescuing them will be no problem." Chen Xing walked to the wall by the window and pointed to the building where the prisoners were being held. "In a bit, I’ll draw their attention. You two will go rescue the prisoners. Remember to help me get out the two women who were captured early this morning!"

"Are they two decent-looking women, with one of them wearing a dress?" They had seen two people like that through a crack in a door.

"Yes!"

Brother Xiao and Ding Yiyu: ’...’

"Those two seemed to have been beaten. I don’t know if they can even walk."

This morning, it was their loud, piercing screams that had given them the opportunity to escape.

Chen Xing wasn’t surprised at all. "Just ask them if they want to live. If they want to live, they can definitely run."

Alright. Brother Xiao and Ding Yiyu had no objections, but Brother Xiao was a little worried. "Are you sure you want to be the one to draw their attention? That’s more dangerous than the rescue."

Drawing their attention meant revealing herself, and the bulk of their forces would attack her.

"Don’t worry about me," Chen Xing said with a calm expression.

Although it was the first time Brother Xiao and Ding Yiyu had met her, they found themselves inexplicably trusting her.

Ding Yiyu glanced at the guns.

’She probably won’t give them to us for self-defense, will she?’

Chen Xing tossed the rifles into their hands. "Borrow these for the rescue."
