Chapter 61: Obediently Accept Your Fate
Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Obediently Accept Your Fate
The Migratory Clan used to only kidnap the rich and powerful. They couldn’t be bothered with common folk.
But now, just two days into the apocalypse, they had set their sights on anyone with supplies.
Of course, they grabbed ordinary people too.
As for what they did with them, no one knew.
In any case, she felt that if you fell into the hands of the Migratory Clan, the chances of returning in one piece were slim.
After all, they were ruthless.
"Are you a jinx, Chen Xing? Nothing good ever happens when I’m with you." Hao Wenli had already lost all hope and stopped trying to suck up to Chen Xing.
She’d never liked Chen Xing to begin with, and her words turned venomous. "You act all high and mighty just because you have a few skills and know some rich, powerful people. Well, look at you now. Are those rich and powerful friends of yours going to save you? What did I ever do to deserve being dragged into this mess with you?"
With that, she shot a venomous glare in her direction, though of course she couldn’t see a thing in the darkness.
He Yu’an’s gaze wasn’t as hateful as Hao Wenli’s, but it held a vicious glint.
Chen Xing naturally perceived both their glares. She wasn’t angry. Instead, she asked thoughtfully, "Want to escape?"
Hao Wenli and He Yu’an were speechless. ’Obviously!’
’Who wouldn’t want to escape?’
They refused to believe Chen Xing would willingly let herself be taken.
But escape?
How?
There were dozens of them, and every last one was a burly, coarse man.
How could the three of them possibly escape?
If they tried to escape and got caught, it would only be worse for them. It was better to just be obedient.
When the two didn’t answer, Chen Xing didn’t press them. Instead, she got up and started pounding hard on the front metal wall of the cargo container.
By now, their truck had left the city. By touching the truck’s body, Chen Xing could see the scene outside: they were on a two-lane road flanked by overgrown weeds and a few scattered houses.
Hao Wenli and He Yu’an were speechless.
’Does she have a death wish?’
The two of them lunged to stop her, but they were too late. The truck was already slowing to a stop.
The cargo container was separate from the driver’s cab, so when the men up front heard the banging, their only option was to stop the truck and open the rear doors to investigate.
"You got a death wish? What’s all the damn banging about?" a man grumbled, clearly irritated.
They had driven all this way in the middle of the night, when they should have been sleeping, only to come back with such a small haul. Anyone would be pissed off.
Seeing how ferocious the man was, a terrified Hao Wenli immediately looked toward Chen Xing, trying to distance herself from the situation.
"What is it?" the man demanded, his lifeless eyes landing on Chen Xing’s face.
Chen Xing looked past the man. Behind him were two other vehicles and over a dozen men.
Two of them had gotten out of their vehicles and were walking over to see what was happening.
"We want to escape..." Chen Xing said, noting that the two approaching men were still about ten meters away.
The man was silent for a moment. He didn’t take her seriously at all.
His gaunt face twitched, the skin wrinkling up, and he was just about to open his mouth to laugh at her.
But before he could, Chen Xing’s foot lashed out, connecting squarely with his jaw.
It was a powerful kick. The man practically flew backward, his jaw very likely dislocated.
"Let’s go!" Chen Xing called over her shoulder before leaping from the truck and diving into the overgrown weeds at the side of the road.
Hao Wenli and He Yu’an were frozen. The two of them shrank back against the wall of the container.
’Escape? Are you fucking kidding me?’
’If they drag us back, do you think they’ll go easy on us? No fucking way we’re escaping!’
The two of them immediately shouted, "This has nothing to do with us! We weren’t trying to escape, she did it on her own!"
When the dozen or so men who had been waiting in the other vehicles saw someone escape, they all piled out and gave chase, leaving just one man behind to guard the two women.
He Yu’an hesitated for a moment.
’She was confident she could take care of this one guy. But they seemed to be outside the city. Could she really get away?’
After weighing the pros and cons, she chose to resign herself to her fate.
’As for Chen Xing, she was sure she wouldn’t get away. How she’d be punished after they caught her was none of her business. All that mattered was saving her own skin.’
Before long, the vehicles up ahead all turned around and came back.
About ten minutes after that, the men who had given chase returned one by one. "Dammit, that bitch is fast as hell!"
The two women, who had just been congratulating themselves for not running, now looked as if they had eaten shit when they heard Chen Xing hadn’t been caught.
’If they’d known it would be that easy, they would have run too!’
But it was too late for regrets.
The man whose jaw had been kicked was seething with rage.
He stormed back into the truck and hauled Hao Wenli to her feet. "You bitch, playing tricks on us! Tell me, where did that other bitch run off to?" His speech was slurred from his injured jaw.
Hao Wenli’s legs went weak with fear, and her eyes welled with tears. She shook her head frantically. "I wasn’t playing any tricks! We barely know her, sir! I don’t know what got into her just now, she suddenly started banging on the wall, and then... you saw what happened! We really don’t know anything!" ’This is so unfair!’
’Chen Xing must have done this on purpose to screw us over!’
’That woman is pure evil.’
"I heard her loud and clear. That bitch told you to escape with her..." The man cradled his jaw, his eyes narrowing. "Not gonna tell the truth, huh? Fine. Once we get back, I’ve got plenty of ways to make you talk! Let’s go..."
Hao Wenli’s heart sank.
She cursed her rotten luck for ever getting involved with someone like Chen Xing.
Meanwhile, Chen Xing was hiding in a patch of tall weeds not far away.
Truthfully, she could have just gone along with them to the Migratory Clan’s camp without a fight.
’But Hao Wenli had blamed her, hadn’t she?’
’In that case, she might as well give Hao Wenli a real reason to hate her guts. It’s not like she cared anyway.’
By escaping like this, she knew Hao Wenli and He Yu’an would inevitably fall under suspicion. At best, they’d be interrogated; at worst, they’d be tortured for information.
She had also correctly judged that the two of them were too cowardly to try to escape, even when given a perfect opportunity.
Once the vehicles were some distance ahead, Chen Xing pulled a beat-up car from her dimensional space and began following them from afar, keeping her headlights off.
After about five or six kilometers, the convoy pulled into a large plaza in a suburban residential area.
The plaza was already filled with parked vehicles.
Most were cargo trucks, along with a few SUVs and a dozen or so RVs.
The RVs were all a uniform white, apparently from some mid-range brand.
Since it was nearly dawn, most people were asleep. Only four lookouts were posted on the rooftops of vehicles at the four cardinal points—north, south, east, and west.
Ma Zha got out of his vehicle and ordered, "Interrogate them thoroughly! We have to catch that woman, Chen Xing!" This was the first time they had failed a capture. If they couldn’t even handle one woman, how was the Migratory Clan supposed to maintain its reputation?
Most importantly, they had already broadcast their boast to an audience of millions.
The man with the injured jaw and another man grunted in affirmation. They shoved Hao Wenli and He Yu’an toward a large building at the edge of the plaza. "I don’t care if I have to stay up all night, I’m gonna make you two tell me where that bitch is!"
Hao Wenli’s face was a mask of panic and fear, and He Yu’an didn’t look much better.
The rest of the men climbed into their respective vehicles to get some sleep.
Chen Xing glanced at the building; it was just an ordinary residential block.
She had no interest in rescuing them.
Raiding their supplies, on the other hand? That she was very interested in.
While everyone was asleep, Chen Xing crept toward the southernmost section of the plaza, where dozens of cargo trucks were parked in rows.
"Hey, man, keep an eye on things for a sec!" the lookout on top of a truck shouted to someone in the distance.
