Chapter 1266: Counterattack
In the sky, the retreating Reverend Deep Sea glanced back and then muttered, “He didn’t chase us.”
Reverend Minghong also stopped and looked back to confirm that Wang Yao hadn’t followed. Snorting, he said, “I guess the kid managed to keep his cool. It’s just too bad we won’t be able to use the trap.”
Godhead Universal said, “It’s fine. Since we didn’t use it here, we can just use it some other time.”
As he spoke, he threw up crimson blood that was rich with spiritual energy.
He then indignantly said, “But that means I ended up taking that blow for no reason.”
Though it had been for the purpose of baiting the enemy, the blow he had taken had been real.
“Come on;
let’s head back first!”
The three flew back to the court.
Back on the Gigantes battlefield, the demons were still wailing and lamenting.
The Infinite Rain had stopped, leaving behind vast numbers of demon corpses and their demonic energy to pollute the earth.
At the same time, the Celestial Canopy Parasol was put away, the Supreme Unity Verdant Barrier dropped.
That invincible barrier had finally disappeared.
“Retreat!” At this moment, Wang Yao gave a baffling order.
All the demons looked at Wang Yao in surprise.
Though the Infinite Rain had dealt serious losses to the demons, the demon Immortals had basically survived intact. Meanwhile, the court had only the Sage Mother as the sole Gold Immortal, and without the Supreme Unity Verdant Barrier, there was no hope of it defeating the demons. This was the perfect opportunity to attack, so why retreat?
But Wang Yao seemed to have no time for explanation, roaring, “Obey my order and retreat!”
Nine Disaster looked over and asked, “Wang Yao, what’s the meaning of this?”
“There’s no time to explain. Retreat first!” Wang Yao raised his arms and began to silently chant as if he was about to cast something.
At the same time, a brilliant light erupted from the court’s army.
Along with this light, the demonic energy covering the dark earth spiraled up into the air, transforming into black dragons.
“The Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation?” an experienced devil shouted in surprise.
Over the eons, humans had developed countless formations to deal with the Primordial Fog invasions. The Eight Ocean Mountains was unquestionably the most outstanding of them, but it was also the most costly. As for the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation, it was considered one of the seven strongest anti-demon formations. Like the Eight Ocean Mountains, it also used demonic energy, but instead of converting it into spiritual energy, it turned the demonic energy against the demons. The lack of conversion meant that this formation had a much lower cost, but as a result, the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation could normally only be used once. After it had converted all the demonic energy into a terrifying attack, all of the demonic energy in the region would be gone, rendering the formation worthless.
Worst of all was that the demonic energy used by the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation wouldn’t actually disappear, simply be dispersed over an even greater area. This meant that even more land would be polluted, and while the dispersed pollution wouldn’t turn humans into demons, it would make any humans that lived for long enough on this land develop violent personalities, and the land would also be less productive.
Thus, while the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation was an excellent weapon against one’s enemies, it was normally kept as a last resort. Anyone who wanted to maintain the development of the domain would not be willing to use it. And while it cost less than the Eight Ocean Mountains, it was still quite pricey and difficult to lay down.
But Yu Cheng had chosen to use it here!
The Gigantes Domain wasn’t his land, so he felt no heartache from polluting it.
The mass death inflicted on the demons was only the start. The demonic energy that they had left behind was the true weapon meant to be used against the high-tier devils. The demonic energy left behind by a million demons was enough to create more than a thousand black dragons, each one with the power of Immortal Platform. Although this was a one-time attack, their suicidal charge was enough to wipe out all the demon Immortals excluding the Gold Immortals!
As the black dragons soared, all the demons despaired.
Nobody had expected Yu Cheng to be so thoroughly prepared, the Infinite Rain simply preparation for the real explosion.
At this moment, Wang Yao roared, “Open!”
With this roar, a giant spatial vortex opened, a voracious black hole. This black hole immediately began to pull all the demonic energy into its maw.
Most of the black dragons were stripped of the demonic energy’s support before they could form and thus dissolved on the spot.
This was a simple spatial shift, and transferring away most of the demonic energy so that the formation was much weaker wasn’t a particularly innovative tactic. It was just that such a large-scale spatial shift normally needed time to prepare, while the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation needed only a short time to finish forming its dragons, and once the dragons were formed, they could no longer simply be shifted away.
But Wang Yao had managed to get it off in time, and while there were still a hundred-some black dragons left, this number no longer presented a threat to the demons. The hundreds of devil chiefs all attacked, and the black dragons were obliterated before they could even get close. A small number were able to get close and explode, but they weren’t able to deal any fatal damage.
“How could this be?”
The Sage Mother was also taken aback.
Wang Yao smiled. “Attack!”
“Raaa!” All the demons roared and charged at the court’s army.
This time, the vanguard had no other tricks. The fatal strike in the original plan had not worked, and they were left to deal with the frenzied counterattack of the demons.
Paling, the Sage Mother shouted, “Retreat!”
But where could they go?
The Ancient Stellar Devil’s river of starlight had blocked their path in the skies, while demons surrounded them on the land, with five Gold Immortals among their ranks. Escaping was easier said than done.
If the formation had worked, the demons would have been dealt a heavy blow, making the river of starlight that much harder to maintain, so the court’s armies could have reunited. But the plan had failed, which meant that they faced a one-sided massacre.
A moment later, the demons impacted against the vanguard. After being massacred by the Infinite Rain and then given a scare by the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation, the demons were furious, willing to kill the Immortal army no matter the cost. While the court’s army did its best to fight back, the numerous demon Titans they still had to deal with and the hordes of demons still surging in meant that they wouldn’t be able to hold for long.
The Court of Myriad Domains.
A divine general rushed in and kneeled before Yu Cheng. “Your Majesty, the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation didn’t achieve the expected result. White Tiger Wang Yao seems to have been ready for it, using his Dao of Space the moment the formation activated to shift away most of the demonic energy, greatly weakening the formation.”
This concise report swiftly conveyed the situation.
Yu Cheng was seated on his throne with his eyes closed.
In normal circumstances, there was no need for someone to report this. The Court of Myriad Domains was right over the Gigantes Domain, so Yu Cheng was able to see it. But Yu Cheng’s attention seemed elsewhere, and none of the eyes of the Fourface Crown of Omniscience had their attention on the battlefield.
It took a while for Yu Cheng to react to the general’s report.
He opened his eyes and spoke like an old man. “The Dragon Dance Formation was ineffective… Wang Yao seemed prepared… hehe, it probably wasn’t Wang Yao, but Tang Jie, no?”
“But, Your Majesty, didn’t you already use your arts to obscure the senses of Tang Jie’s will?” the general remarked.
Yu Cheng casually replied, “Indeed, I obscured his will, but just because he can’t see it doesn’t mean he can’t think of it. If Tang Jie had to rely on his avatar’s will for everything, Tang Jie wouldn’t be Tang Jie.”
As he spoke, his eyes glowed.
One of the faces on the Crown of Omniscience turned to the Gigantes battlefield.
The Immortal soldiers were desperately trying to hold off the onslaught, but they were fast reaching their limit.
Yu Cheng’s eyes flashed, and then he sighed, raised the Xuanyuan Sword, and swung.
From his throne, he slashed his sword at the river of starlight.
With one strike, the river of starlight exploded, lighting up the void with its radiance, and the Ancient Stellar Devil tumbled from the sky with a howl.
With the skyward path reopened, the Sage Mother hastily gave the order to retreat.
The situation was extremely disadvantageous such that getting the entire army out in one piece was impossible, so the Sage Mother could only issue a general order to retreat. Only the lucky would survive.
They wanted to run, but the demons were unwilling to let them go.
Wang Yao’s face flashed with savagery as he laughed, “You’re trying to run after killing so many of my men? Pay up with your lives!”
He gave chase. While he had greatly exhausted his Dao power from shifting away all the demonic energy and wouldn’t be able to use any Dao Arts for the moment, he still had his demonic energy and thus pursued with great gusto.
At this moment, Tang Jie once again spoke into his ear. “Bao’er, be careful. There might be an ambush up ahead.”
“Only ‘might be’, right? Yu Cheng would never use the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation as bait. The price would be too great. So in my view, it’s not very likely!” Saying this, Wang Yao charged up, seizing a True Immortal and squeezing him to death. Leaving that Divine Soul to revive, he set off for his next target, while more demons came up behind and bombarded the True Immortal. With a scream, that True Immortal was buried under the wrath of the demons.
A black tide of death pursued the court’s army, and the demons, fresh off a heavy loss, were now dealing their own painful blow. The tables had turned with dazzling speed.
Even Yiyi couldn’t help but say, “Big Brother, doesn’t it seem like the demons are going to win?”
“‘Win’?” Tang Jie laughed. “They’re still far away from actually winning. Just watch. It’s about to be their turn to suffer.”
Xu Miaoran said in surprise, “So there really is an ambush? But where are the ambushers? Did Yu Cheng already know that the Demon-Slayer Dragon Dance Formation would fail?”
Tang Jie smiled. “Of course he didn’t know that, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have any ambushing soldiers. It’s just that they were initially meant for Wang Yao but now have to be used against the entire army.”
Xu Miaoran realized that Tang Jie was referring to the ambushers that would have closed the trap started by the three Gold Immortals.
Since they hadn’t ambushed Wang Yao, they had yet to be exposed and could now be put to work.
“Then why did you say to Wang Yao that there only ‘might be’ an ambush?” Xu Miaoran asked.
“Because this time, I hoped that he wouldn’t listen to me,” Tang Jie replied.
He explained to his wife, “Don’t forget that Nox Alba is still our enemy. Grinding away some of their strength means that we get to preserve some of our own.”
As he spoke, there was another shift on the battlefield.
