Chapter 95: Chapter 95 Sea of horrors.

Even though Luna and her team had managed to survive the attack from the government forces, the same couldn’t be said for the survivors who had escaped from the aircraft and ended up in the sea surrounding the island.

Beneath the island, the remaining survivors had fallen into the water, believing it would be their safest option.

Unfortunately, they had no idea that stepping into that water would become the biggest mistake of their lives.

"Oh, they don’t know what they just did," Kai laughed, dropping heavily onto one of the couches in the sitting room.

They had already left the panic room now that the immediate danger had been dealt with. Everyone had gathered in the spacious sitting room, occupying the couches and chairs while keeping their attention on the large CCTV monitor mounted against the wall.

The screen had originally been meant for entertainment.

Now?

It was displaying the deaths of their enemies.

And apparently, that was the most entertaining thing they could watch during the apocalypse.

Luna sat comfortably while munching on popcorn, her eyes glued to the monitor.

"Let’s see what the sea does to them."

Her lips curved into a pleased smile.

"And that was amazing. It actually pleases me to see that you guys are getting better with your abilities. That’s at least refreshing."

Her gaze shifted toward Astrid.

"And Astrid... that was something else. I don’t know how you tapped into that ability, but whatever it was, it was impressive. At that level of display, you’re coming with us during the next raid to the final supermarket."

Astrid smiled awkwardly at the compliment.

"Really?"

"Of course."

The other men exchanged glances.

Ethan wouldn’t lie.

Luna had displayed an impressive level of leadership during the entire battle.

He wasn’t sure he could have handled the situation as efficiently as she had.

The way she had kept everyone focused and calm despite being completely surrounded had been remarkable. She hadn’t panicked when the creatures appeared. She hadn’t wasted movements or resources.

Every decision had been calculated.

Every trap had been used at the right moment.

And somehow, despite how badly everything had started, they had won.

Their home was finally free from immediate danger.

"I appreciate that," Ethan finally said. "But I don’t think you should give us all the credit."

Luna glanced at him.

"You’re also the reason we’re alive. I don’t know how you guys operate normally, but the teamwork between all of you is crazy."

His gaze moved around the room.

"My friends of many years couldn’t even do that for me. Yet a group of strangers managed to risk their lives for each other."

The words unexpectedly warmed Luna’s chest.

She wasn’t used to hearing things like that.

Praise wasn’t something she had received often in her previous life. Most people had only approached her when they wanted something.

She didn’t know what to say.

So she simply nodded.

It wasn’t an acceptance of the praise.

Just a silent acknowledgment.

"Well, someone has to take care of this place," Luna said after a moment. "Otherwise, it won’t survive for long. Especially when it’s filled with nothing but a bunch of dudes."

Kai immediately nodded.

"Exactly!"

Luna pointed at him.

"At least having one woman around keeps things stable."

"That is exactly the Luna I know."

Kai grinned.

"And honestly, I’m not surprised you turned this place into a proper fortress."

Luna ignored him.

Her attention returned to the monitor.

Everyone else did the same.

For a while, they watched the survivors struggling in the water.

Then Rowan spoke.

"Can I make a suggestion, Luna?"

She glanced toward him.

"Go ahead."

Unlike the others, Rowan wasn’t sitting near Luna.

He had moved toward the dining area and was sitting there alone.

Kai noticed it immediately.

He narrowed his eyes.

Why was Rowan suddenly keeping his distance?

Had the two of them fought?

Kai didn’t know.

And judging from Rowan’s expression, he wasn’t going to ask.

Rowan folded his hands together.

"It’s about Astrid."

Astrid looked toward him.

Rowan continued.

"Why don’t we leave him here with Miles when we go on the next raid?"

Luna raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

"The government."

Rowan’s expression became serious.

"They’re persistent. We already know that. This is the second time they’ve sent people here, and they’re not stupid. They’ll eventually realize that their teams keep disappearing around this island."

Everyone became quiet.

Rowan pointed toward Astrid.

"We need someone capable of defending the house while we’re gone. With an SSS-rank awakened here, what do we have to lose?"

Luna stared at him.

It was a brilliant suggestion.

That was the problem.

She hadn’t completely trusted Astrid yet.

He was new.

He had just arrived.

And although he had awakened an incredibly powerful ability, Luna still didn’t know what kind of person he truly was.

She couldn’t afford someone inside her base who could influence the others or turn against her at the worst possible moment.

Miles was different.

She trusted Miles now.

He was loyal, useful, and practically obsessed with rebuilding anything that got damaged.

The man could create and repair things with his hands that would take others weeks to figure out.

He was valuable.

Very valuable.

But if Luna and the others left the island again, the house would become vulnerable.

No matter how powerful the defenses were, someone needed to remain behind.

Especially now.

The government had already discovered the island.

And Luna had a terrible feeling that their next visit wouldn’t be with ordinary soldiers.

They would come prepared.

Perhaps with awakened people.

Perhaps with the same type of enhanced humans Astrid had been talking about.

Maybe even stronger ones.

So leaving Astrid behind might actually be the smartest decision.

The question was whether she could trust him enough to do it.

Luna sighed.

"We’ll see."

Rowan nodded.

He didn’t push further.

At that moment, Ethan suddenly leaned closer to the screen.

"Wait."

Everyone looked toward him.

"What?"

Ethan pointed at the monitor.

"Is that water moving?"

The survivors in the sea had begun to notice it too.

The surface around them was changing.

The water was rising.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

And somehow, its color was changing as well.

"What the hell?" Kai leaned forward.

"The sea is getting darker."

Adrian’s expression changed.

"That’s not normal."

The water had once been dark blue.

Now it was almost completely black.

Not the ordinary darkness of deep ocean water.

It looked thick.

Heavy.

Almost like tar.

"How is that possible?" Ethan asked. "There’s no rain."

He stared at the screen.

"And there’s nothing here that should cause the water level to rise like that."

Kai swallowed.

"It’s almost like it’s alive."

Adrian immediately rubbed his arms.

"Don’t say that."

Kai looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because that sounds terrifying."

Luna laughed.

"The sea being alive? That’s ridiculous."

The words came easily.

But deep down, she wasn’t entirely convinced.

She had already watched monsters appear from nowhere.

She had seen creatures with wings.

She had seen dungeons.

She had witnessed awakened people suddenly developing abilities that shouldn’t have been possible.

The world had already broken every rule she thought she understood.

So why couldn’t the sea be alive too?

Luna’s smile slowly disappeared.

"Oh my God..."

She stared at the monitor.

"If the ocean becomes another problem, we’re seriously screwed."

Everyone looked at her.

"We’re literally sitting on an island in the middle of it."

Nobody laughed.

That realization was too serious.

Adrian swallowed.

"We just finished dealing with a gigantic creature falling from the sky."

He stared at the blackening water.

"Can this world just give us a damn moment to breathe?"

Kai nodded.

"Exactly. We haven’t even recovered yet."

He pointed toward the screen.

"Now we’re supposed to fight monstrous seawater too?"

"Don’t call it monstrous seawater," Adrian muttered.

"Why?"

"Because I don’t want to hear those words together."

Luna rolled her eyes.

"The house is protected. Even if something happens, we have the panic room."

That was the one thing she trusted.

The panic room had been built to survive almost anything.

The walls were reinforced.

The entrance was protected.

The defensive systems were still active.

And the mountain itself gave them another layer of protection.

Whatever was happening outside, nothing should be able to reach them easily.

At least, that was what Luna hoped.

Then one of the survivors screamed.

The entire room fell silent.

On the monitor, several people were desperately swimming toward the island.

They were trying to escape the water.

But the sea wasn’t letting them.

Something moved beneath the surface.

At first, it looked like a shadow.

Then another appeared.

And another.

Luna leaned closer.

"What is that?"

Nobody answered.

The shadows grew larger.

Then an enormous eye rose from beneath the surface.

It was so massive that, even through the CCTV camera, it looked almost as large as a vehicle.

Kai’s mouth fell open.

"What the fuck...?"

Another eye appeared.

Then another.

And another.

Within seconds, dozens of enormous eyes were visible beneath the black surface.

The survivors began screaming.

"GET OUT!"

"SWIM!"

"GO!"

"THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE WATER!"

Panic spread across the group.

But they were already too late.

The black water suddenly surged.

A powerful force grabbed the survivors beneath the surface.

One moment, they were floating.

The next—

They were dragged downward.

Twenty people disappeared at once.

Their screams echoed across the water before being swallowed by the darkness.

Then silence.

The sitting room became completely still.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody even seemed to breathe.

The only thing visible on the monitor was the black surface of the sea.

Then blood began spreading across it.

Red streaks slowly covered the dark water.

Kai’s expression twisted.

"Did they..."

His voice faded.

"Did they all just get killed at once?"

No one could answer.

Luna stared at the screen.

She couldn’t see what was beneath the water.

But she had a very good idea what had happened.

They had been mutilated.

Probably torn apart before they could even react.

And then something even stranger happened.

Luna narrowed her eyes.

For a brief moment, she felt as though the enormous eyes beneath the water were looking directly at them.

Not at the island.

Not at the cameras.

At them.

She swallowed.

"That can’t be possible."

Her voice was quieter this time.

Adrian suddenly pointed at the screen.

"Look!"

Everyone turned.

"The sea!"

The water was retreating.

Rapidly.

The black surface that had risen so high was suddenly pulling away from the island.

It wasn’t moving like ordinary waves.

It was withdrawing.

As if something beneath it had decided to leave.

Luna’s eyes widened.

The color of the water remained black.

The blood remained floating across the surface.

But the sea itself was moving backward.

Kai slowly stood from the couch.

"What the hell is happening?"

No one answered him.

Adrian’s face had gone pale.

"The sea really is alive."

Luna didn’t correct him this time.
