Chapter 102: Chapter 102 Journey II

Miles shook his head.

It was all in his head now.

Keep the invincible shield turned on at all times. Make sure every entrance and exit was sealed. Keep every trap ready and watch everything through the CCTV cameras.

If any suspicious activity was noticed, he wasn’t supposed to rush out or make himself known. He was meant to lay low and observe until he was certain whoever was approaching had noticed the building.

Once they did, they would unleash the traps.

The traps would attack, and they would sit back and watch the outcome through the cameras.

If it seemed like the traps couldn’t finish the job and the intruders kept getting closer, then Astrid would attack with his powers.

But if it became obvious that the situation was getting out of control and they could no longer handle it themselves, they were to contact Luna immediately.

She would send backup.

That was all he had to do.

Simple, right?

Except it wasn’t.

No matter how simple the instructions sounded, forgetting even one thing could have deadly consequences.

Miles had to keep the shield active, monitor the cameras, check the traps, make sure Astrid was ready, and ensure that nothing suspicious got close enough to threaten the base.

He stared around the mansion.

"Why does guarding this place suddenly feel like I’m responsible for an entire country?"

Astrid glanced at him.

Miles sighed.

"Don’t look at me like that. You know I’m right."

Astrid didn’t answer.

He simply looked toward the enormous windows, his expression slightly tense.

Neither of them could afford to relax.

Not after what had happened.

Not after the government had appeared.

Not after the monsters had come.

And definitely not after the ocean had mysteriously vanished.

A voice suddenly came from the hallway.

"I’m coming, but I don’t know where the damn supermarket is located, so how the hell am I supposed to take you guys there?"

Adrian finally rushed into the sitting room, his backpack hanging from one shoulder. Ethan followed right behind him, looking much calmer than Adrian despite the fact that they were preparing to leave the mansion and travel through an increasingly dangerous apocalypse.

Luna barely looked up.

"That has never been an issue in the past, so I don’t see why this would be different. Of course, with my system, it should help with the projection of the place. You can easily get us there once you have the location in your head."

Adrian stared at her.

"You’re saying that like it’s easy."

"It is."

"No, it isn’t."

Luna raised an eyebrow.

Adrian pointed at her.

"You always do this. You make something sound incredibly simple, then I discover it’s actually one of the most dangerous things I’ve ever done."

"You’ve done worse."

Adrian opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Unfortunately, she had a point.

He had already used his dimensional powers in situations where one wrong move could have gotten everyone killed.

So maybe transporting them to a supermarket wasn’t impossible.

Still...

"Fine," he muttered. "I’ll figure it out."

Rowan wasn’t convinced.

"So we’re really going to ignore the creepy ocean that vanished and still hasn’t returned, just to leave like this?"

Everyone became quiet.

Rowan’s eyes remained fixed on Luna.

"What if whatever made it disappear is still there? What if the monster underneath it stops us? What are we going to do then, Luna?"

He stepped closer.

"This isn’t something magic and a system can simply stop. Remember what happened when both our powers and your system failed."

His expression was serious.

"We don’t know what we’re dealing with anymore."

Rowan kept dropping one possibility after another, clearly trying to find something that would stop the journey altogether.

Luna didn’t immediately respond.

Instead, she reached into her bag and brought out a small mirror.

She casually checked her reflection, fixing her hair before tucking a wild strand neatly behind her ear.

Rowan stared at her.

"Are you seriously fixing your hair right now?"

"Yes."

"We’re discussing a potential monster beneath an empty ocean."

"And my hair is still important."

Kai snorted.

Ethan covered his mouth to hide his laughter.

Rowan looked like he wanted to say something else but decided against it.

Luna put the mirror away.

"Nothing can’t be killed."

Rowan frowned.

"What?"

"Whatever this is."

Her expression became serious.

"I know something is causing it. The ocean didn’t just disappear for no reason. Something is behind it."

She looked toward the balcony.

"And whatever it is, it’s something living."

Her eyes narrowed.

"And anything living can be killed."

Nobody spoke.

"We’re going to deal with it eventually," Luna continued. "But we’re not going to sit here forever because we’re afraid of something we haven’t even seen."

She turned toward Rowan.

"You won’t die."

The words came out so naturally that Luna didn’t even realize what she had said until the room went completely still.

"And your safety is my paramount concern. Everyone’s safety here is."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Luna blinked.

She hadn’t planned to say that.

She didn’t even know when those words had come out of her mouth.

Everyone was staring at her.

Especially Kai.

His eyes were practically bulging.

He slowly looked at Ethan.

Then Rowan.

Then back at Luna.

"Did she just..."

His mouth opened.

"Oh my God. This is shocking."

Adrian immediately covered Kai’s mouth.

"Don’t ruin the moment."

Kai pulled Adrian’s hand away.

"But she actually said she cares about us!"

"I can hear you," Luna said.

Kai immediately shut his mouth.

Ethan chuckled.

Even Rowan looked stunned.

Luna crossed her arms.

"Why are you all staring at me?"

"Because you’re being nice," Kai answered honestly.

"I’m always nice."

Everyone stared at her.

Luna’s expression hardened.

"Fine. I’m occasionally nice."

Kai nodded.

"That’s more believable."

She rolled her eyes.

"I’ve been following my plan, and nothing went wrong."

Her tone became serious again.

"That only changed when the glitch happened and caused both my system and your powers to vanish."

She looked at each of them.

"But I’m aware now. I’m paying attention. I’m not going to let the same thing happen twice."

She took a breath.

"So, now that we’re all packed up, are we ready?"

One by one, they nodded.

Ethan’s eyes suddenly moved toward the dining table.

Something had caught his attention.

A flask.

It was sitting right there on top of the table.

Ethan walked over and picked it up.

"What’s inside this?"

Miles immediately rushed forward.

"That’s coming with me."

He reached for it.

"Who knows when we’re going to be hungry?"

Ethan stared at him.

"It’s a flask."

"I know."

"Then how exactly are you planning to eat from it?"

Miles paused.

"...Water is important too."

Ethan shook his head and dropped the flask into his backpack.

Miles stared.

"Hey!"

"I’m carrying it."

"But that’s mine."

"You can take it from me when we get back."

Miles looked offended.

But after a few seconds, he simply sighed.

"Fine."

With nothing else left to pack, the group gathered their small backpacks.

Luna walked toward the balcony.

The moment she stepped outside, she saw the front yard.

It was spotless.

The robots had done an incredible job maintaining the mansion. The ground was clean, the surroundings were orderly, and everything looked almost peaceful.

Almost.

Because beyond the beautiful yard was the one thing Luna couldn’t ignore.

The sea was still gone.

A massive, hollow abyss stretched where the ocean had once been.

Darkness filled the enormous pit.

No waves.

No water.

No movement.

Nothing.

Luna stared at it for only a few seconds.

Then she looked away.

There was no point standing there and frightening herself with something she didn’t understand.

She turned toward Adrian and gave him a signal.

"We’re going."

Adrian nodded.

Behind them, Astrid and Miles walked onto the balcony to see them off.

Astrid’s eyes immediately found Kai.

He stared at him quietly.

There was something in his expression that Miles noticed almost immediately.

Astrid’s hand moved toward the back of his neck.

He scratched the area absentmindedly.

The strange mark there had been bothering him again.

Kai was laughing with Ethan, completely unaware that Astrid was watching him.

"Why do you keep staring like that?" Miles finally asked.

Astrid looked at him.

"I don’t know."

He sighed.

"I’m worried they’re not going to come back together."

Miles frowned.

"What?"

"Something might happen."

Astrid’s eyes returned to Kai.

"We might not see them for a long time. Something could change while they’re gone."

His voice became quieter.

"Even though I don’t know them that much, I’m scared for him."

Miles followed Astrid’s gaze.

He saw Kai.

Then he looked at Astrid.

Then he facepalmed.

"Oh, God."

Astrid frowned.

"What?"

Miles sighed.

"Just remove whatever is in your mind."

"I don’t understand."

"Kai probably won’t remember you in a particular time anyway, and Luna is territorial, so back off kindly."

Astrid’s eyes widened.

"What are you talking about?"

Miles didn’t answer.

He simply walked away.

Astrid stood there, completely confused.

Was Miles implying that Luna was interested in Kai?

"So we’re finally going to take that journey."

He looked up at the sky and took a deep breath.

"Fuck. I’m nervous."

He slowly raised both hands.

Adrian began circling his hands.

Rowan watched carefully.

"This is the last journey."

"I can’t wait for us to get back, end this madness, and finally be happy and at peace."

"I hope so."

Kai didn’t say anything.

The clean yard.

The mountain.

The trees.

And finally, the enormous dark abyss where the ocean used to be.

It felt as though this might be the last time he would ever see the island.

The feeling was so strong that it made him uncomfortable.

Why did it feel like a goodbye?

Kai swallowed.

Adrian’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts.

The wall in front of them suddenly began splitting apart.

A dimensional rift appeared, dark energy swirling around its edges as the portal expanded.

"It’s ready now!" Adrian yelled. "Get in, all of you!"

Rowan stepped forward.

But before entering, he looked back.

"We’ll be back."

Almost alive.

Almost as if something beneath it was waiting.

He quickly looked away and followed Miles inside.

The doors closed.

The security system activated.

Then the invisible shield came back online.

The entire mansion vanished from the naked eye.
