Chapter 100 Last mission
Chapter 100: Chapter 100 Last mission
It was set.
Luna was getting ready for the biggest journey of her life—or at least the biggest one for now. This would be their final major hoarding mission until the disaster the government was cooking up finally came to an end.
She had already completed the necessary survey with her system. She needed to know exactly what they were walking into, and after checking the location of the supermarket, Luna realized that things were going to be far more complicated than she had expected.
There could be survivors.
A lot of them.
Depending on how long the supermarket had remained untouched, it might have become a refuge for people trying to survive the apocalypse.
Luna sat comfortably on the couch in the sitting room, staring at the glowing system panel in front of her.
"What did you notice? System, report everything."
The system immediately responded.
[The supermarket is heavily fortified.]
[Based on the available information, a large number of civilians appear to have made the supermarket their permanent residence. It has become another established safe zone, and the government does not appear to have knowledge of its existence.]
Luna’s eyebrows lifted.
[There also appears to be a hierarchy within the settlement. Food and other resources are distributed according to an established system.]
[Current estimated population: fifty survivors.]
[Estimated remaining supplies: millions of individual goods. With proper rationing, the available resources could sustain the settlement for several years.]
Luna’s fingers tapped against her knee.
That was troublesome.
She had expected survivors.
She hadn’t expected fifty people living together in an organized settlement with enough supplies to survive for years.
That meant there would be rules.
Leaders.
Guards.
People willing to fight for what they had.
It wasn’t going to be as simple as walking into an abandoned supermarket and taking everything.
"How far is the supermarket from here?"
She leaned forward.
"Give me the distance from the island to the city where it’s located."
The system paused briefly before calculating.
[Approximately one hundred miles by direct route.]
[Travel time may be significantly reduced with a high-speed vehicle.]
[However, the estimated time does not account for monsters, damaged roads, blocked routes, hostile survivors, dungeons, or other environmental hazards.]
Luna nodded.
"Fine."
One hundred miles wasn’t impossible.
Especially not with Adrian.
His portals and dimensional abilities meant they wouldn’t necessarily have to spend hours traveling by vehicle.
That would save both time and resources.
More importantly, it would save her coins.
She could use those resources to improve the vehicle, upgrade their equipment, or strengthen the mansion’s defenses.
Luna stared at the system panel for several seconds.
Her plan was simple.
Enter the supermarket.
Take control of the situation.
Destroy whatever system the settlement had established.
Create enough confusion to prevent anyone from organizing a proper resistance.
Then take everything she needed.
She didn’t care if they had spent weeks building their little safe haven.
She didn’t care if they had created rules.
She didn’t care if they believed the food belonged to them.
The moment Luna saw something useful, it became hers.
She wasn’t going to die because she was too kind to take resources from strangers.
This was the apocalypse.
Everyone was responsible for themselves.
If someone had something she needed and she had the ability to take it, then she would.
Simple.
Luna wasn’t interested in pity.
Pity had nearly killed her in her previous life.
She wouldn’t make that mistake again.
Slow footsteps approached from behind.
Luna didn’t turn around.
She already knew someone was coming.
The footsteps stopped.
There was a brief silence.
Whoever it was seemed to be choosing their words carefully.
They could probably see the irritation written across Luna’s face.
Finally, Adrian spoke.
"I think you were unnecessarily rude to Rowan."
Luna’s eyes remained on the system panel.
Adrian continued.
"Those words weren’t necessary. You were too harsh on him."
Luna slowly looked over her shoulder.
Adrian stepped further into the room.
"You know what he’s afraid of. This mission could be suicide. It could get all of us killed."
His expression was serious.
"And shouldn’t we be thinking about our base too? We’re leaving it behind. What happens if someone discovers it while we’re gone? Someone could take control of the place or destroy it. That’s a possibility we shouldn’t ignore."
Luna listened without interrupting.
Adrian took a breath.
"And whether you like it or not, the day we walked through that door, we became a group."
He gestured toward the others.
"We’re together now. Until the end."
His voice softened.
"We should be doing things together instead of constantly arguing. That’s exactly what this world wants. It wants us divided."
Adrian looked directly into her eyes.
"We can’t give it that."
For once, Luna didn’t immediately respond.
At the bottom of the staircase leading toward her room, Rowan sat quietly.
He hadn’t joined the conversation.
He simply stared through the nearby window with a distant expression.
Adrian glanced toward him.
"He’s terrified, Luna."
Rowan’s fingers tightened around his knees.
"He doesn’t want to lose us."
Adrian turned back toward Luna.
"And honestly, neither do I."
The words hung in the room.
"Please, just drop this. Maybe once we know the base is properly secured, we can make another trip. But right now, I don’t think this is the right moment."
Luna stared at him.
Then she looked at her watch.
Time.
Her eyes returned to the system panel, which was still glowing brightly.
"Time waits for no one."
Her voice was calm.
"I’ve already made my decision."
Adrian frowned.
Luna continued.
"Besides, Astrid and Miles are staying behind."
She pointed toward Astrid.
"Astrid is an awakened."
Then she looked at him directly.
"And don’t misunderstand what I mean by that. He’s an SSS-class awakened."
Astrid’s expression stiffened.
Luna wasn’t finished.
"Miles knows every inch of this place. He knows the defenses, the security systems, the emergency routes, and how to operate everything here."
She leaned back.
"He can use the mansion’s defenses if something happens."
Luna’s gaze moved across the room.
"So no, I’m not worried about the base."
She paused.
"The longer we sit here arguing, the more exposed we become."
Nobody spoke.
Luna’s voice became colder.
"The creatures are evolving. The world is changing. The government is moving. New dungeons are appearing."
She tapped her finger against the armrest.
"And now an entire ocean has disappeared."
That made everyone silent.
"We don’t have the luxury of waiting for things to become convenient."
Luna stood.
"Get ready."
The others reluctantly began preparing themselves.
Kai, surprisingly, didn’t argue.
He simply glanced at Astrid.
Astrid seemed nervous.
His lips moved several times before he finally managed to speak.
"You killed the awakened who came here last."
Luna looked at him.
Astrid swallowed.
"That means someone stronger could come after us."
His fingers tightened.
"We don’t know what kind of people they’ll send next. We don’t know what abilities they’ll have."
He looked around the room.
"It’s dangerous to underestimate them."
Luna groaned and rubbed her forehead.
"For fuck’s sake."
She looked directly at Astrid.
"What exactly do you want me to do?"
Astrid went quiet.
"Should I cancel the mission?"
Her voice sharpened.
"Should I sit here and wait until another group comes looking for us?"
She threw her hands outward.
"What do you want from me, Astrid?"
Before Astrid could answer, Rowan finally spoke.
"We just want you to listen to your companions."
Luna turned toward him.
Rowan slowly stood from the staircase.
"We’re the reason you’re not doing this alone."
His expression was serious.
"All of us should work together and make it to the end. Isn’t that why we’re together in the first place?"
Luna’s lips curled.
Then she laughed.
"Wait."
Her eyes narrowed.
"That’s where you’re wrong."
Rowan froze.
"I saved your life."
Her voice carried through the room.
"I saved all of your asses."
She pointed at each of them.
"Every single one of you."
Her finger finally settled on Astrid.
"Even you."
Astrid looked away.
"Imagine I didn’t have my system."
Luna’s expression hardened.
"What then?"
Nobody answered.
"What would we have done?"
She stepped closer.
"We would have starved."
Her voice became louder.
"Where would all the food have come from? What about the bunker we raided at the safe zone? How exactly were we supposed to carry all those supplies around?"
She scoffed.
"It all went into my space."
Luna’s gaze swept across the room.
"So yes, I’m listening to you."
She paused.
"But you also need to listen to me."
Her voice became calmer.
"We don’t survive this world by constantly hesitating."
Silence.
"We survive by making decisions."
Luna adjusted the sleeve of her robe.
"This is the final major mission."
She looked toward the others.
"We go in, take what we need, and return."
Her eyes were sharp.
"After that, we can focus on strengthening the base."
Luna walked toward the center of the room.
"And I’m not asking you to trust the world."
She smiled.
"I’m asking you to trust me."
Nobody answered immediately.
The tension remained heavy.
But one by one, the others began gathering their equipment.
Luna turned toward the system.
"System."
The glowing panel appeared again.
"I need equipment."
She paused dramatically.
"Protection. Armor. Weapons. Anything that can increase our chances of surviving."
Her eyes gleamed.
"We’re going on the biggest road trip of our lives."
She cracked her knuckles.
"And this time, we’re coming back with everything we need."
The system began processing her request.
[Request received.]
