Chapter 81- Flagged for Stupidity
Hyde’s fury made me shiver in fear. A high-level warrior could be far more imposing than I had realised. It was a shame that things ended up like this. I was certain that I had built a good rapport with Hyde. Her affinity to me was at least leaning towards a positive direction. However, all that was thrown away. In her eyes, now I was nothing better than a lousy lecher.
Her hand moved to rest on her sheathed weapon. “Wait!” I shouted. “Remember that favour you owe me? I’m using it now. Don’t kill me, please.”
Hyde looked down at me like I was a disgusting worm, but said, “Don’t be stupid. I wouldn’t kill you over this.” Hyde stuffed her panties into her pocket and tried to soothe the embarrassment she was feeling. “All you otherworlders are such deviants,” she muttered under her breath.
I wanted to tell her that I was different, but I knew she would not believe me. It was best for me to stay quiet.
When Hyde calmed down, she walked over to the mimic. She showed no hostile intent towards the monster. “All this time, this man-eating beast has been chewing on leaves benignly. How strange.” She poked the chest, hoping for a reaction but was not given one.
“If you want, while you’re over there you can brush its teeth,” I said.
Leaving the knight to her fascination, I put my thoughts to more important matters. For one, this dungeon needed some work. It was my property and it was in shambles. If I was to make it into a real clinic one day, all the broken furniture in here would need fixing. That could be done with my Repair skill, but I had nowhere near enough mana.
I couldn’t even fix a table with my entire MP bar.
For the Repair skill to be useful to me, I needed either an item to restore my MP over time, or levels in Soul which would increase my max mana. Out of the two, only the first seemed doable. However, the strength of the item’s regenerative powers also needed to be taken into account. If I used something like Newmill’s ring, the MP regeneration would be so slow that I’d be here for days.
Another possibility was hiring a carpenter to come and fix all this, but I reckoned it would cost too much.
If Eppy were here she would tell me to practice my MP conversion rate, but who knew how long that would take. Though, was it even possible to make a skill given by the System more efficient?
From my knowledge, a spell that a person cast themselves could be made more efficient because the casting of the spell relied on the person. Technically it wasn’t me using the Repair skill; it was the System. How could I improve the efficiency when I wasn’t even the one casting it?
And I truly had no idea how to cast it at all. Just like how a fireball-spewing skill mage didn’t know the first thing about true fire magic.
An interesting thought came over me: if a study mage like Eppy were to use the fireball skill from the System, what would happen? Eppy had far greater control and efficiency with fire magic than the System could ever give her.
If she did use the skill in her System, would it be inefficient? Or would it combine the System’s efficiency along with her own and become even more powerful?
I only wished Eppy didn’t hate the System, so I could get her to test it. Those with great mastery over the arcane, like study mages, were both the best and worst people to test my hypothesis. The best because they had high mastery over magic, and the worst because they hated the System.
I supposed that becoming the lab rat myself was also an option. I would need to find books on repair magic and then test if I could improve the System’s efficiency. If my experiment was a success, it would be an incredible breakthrough. Not just for the Repair skill, but everything else too.
The state of the dungeon would have to wait until I had that sorted.
Onto the next matter of business, I conjured my slot machine. I had 1 LP and 3 slot tokens; it wouldn’t do to save them too long. I was sacrificing potential for however long I left them.
My beautiful slot machine looked sexier for every moment that I didn’t see it. Absence truly did make the heart grow fonder.
I licked my lips and then used 1 LP on my first spin. The noise of the reels spinning didn’t seem to interest Hyde, who was enamoured with the pacifist mimic.
The first reel landed on a golden ‘Stats’. I tapped my foot excitedly. The next two also landed on ‘Stats’ and I pumped my fists in the air.
[One Golden Reel: Extra Payout]
[Choose your Stats.]
[+4 Body] [+5 Mind] [+3 Soul]
The choice wasn’t as obvious as I wanted it to be. My Mind was already at quite a high level. I didn’t know how good the return on investment would be if I put more points into it. Both the HP from Body and the MP from Soul would be put to great use.
Despite being level 20, I was very fragile. In a world full of terrifying enemies, it felt like a gust of wind could kill me. Especially since I was almost slain by the giant rat.
Though, from Blyth’s explanation of stat benefits. What one gains scales exponentially. The effect of gaining a point into Body level differs greatly depending on if your Body is low or high.
Since my Mind was at 21, even a single point would give me tremendous benefit. Whereas 4 levels into Body would give me a grand total of 140 extra HP. That was a drop in the ocean compared to the 2200 HP that a level 20 warrior would have.
If I were to think optimistically, that 2200 HP was nothing compared to my Mind level. Thanks to my high Mind, I could trivialise all that HP by knocking my opponent out with a homing dart. My darts also scaled off of Mind, so the more points I had into it, the faster and preciser my darts would be.
In the end, I chose to increase my Mind.
I went in for another spin, this time using a slot token. The three reels all landed on different rewards. The spin was a miss. I clicked my tongue. Looking over to the corner of the room, Mimic was smacking his tongue as Hyde fed him by hand. Lucky guy, I thought.
Another spin it was. The three reels clicked into place on the word ‘Random’.
[Choose your Prize.]
[Iron Will] [Iron Will] [Iron Will]
Once again, I wanted to teach the System what the word ‘choice’ meant. If all the options were the same, I wasn’t choosing. My fingers clicked the screen for an explanation.
[Iron Will (Title): Greatly increase the mental fortitude received from the Mind stat. (Mind)]
[Iron Will (Skill): When activated, iron clothing with intense will. Costs 17 MP. (Soul)]
[Iron Will (Pet): Gain William the Iron as your faithful servant.]
Ok, perhaps I was a bit hasty in my judgement, but these were still absurd.
The first option revealed to me something I didn’t consider. Was I gaining mental toughness by increasing my Mind? It sort of made sense. If I wasn’t noticing a difference, maybe my mental fortitude was low from the start. I also believed this title to be one of the class titles that Penrin spoke of, since it was something that affected what I gained from stats.
The second made me lower my head to inspect the creases of my shirt. I was making use of the communal rune-powered washing machine at home base, but I wasn’t ironing my clothes. It felt like too much of a chore to care about presentation when in a world like this. There was far better stuff for me to be doing. Though, the skill could be useful if I ever opened up a laundromat.
The last choice was inconceivable to me. I wouldn’t want what seemed to be a slave. However, what would picking the option entail? Would I receive a newly created human to do my bidding? Or would someone who already existed be turned into my pet? Both options scared me.
I picked the first reward and then went in for my last spin. I placed the slot token into the machine, and it clinked on its way down. My hand grabbed the lever and cranked it. The reels made whirring and rattling noises before all three finally stopped on ‘Item’.
[Choose your Item.]
[Red Flag: When raised, hordes of enemies will appear in waves. Romantic partners find this item to be concerning.]
[Green Flag: When raised, increases the morale of all allies in a 50-metre range. Romantic partners find this item to be reassuring.]
[Blue Flag: When raised, creates a Fast Travel point at the location of use. Romantic partners are indifferent to this item. (Consumable)]
No one in this world liked themes as much as this System did.
I was interested in all of the options I was given. The first was not outwardly useful, especially for me. I personally didn’t want to face more enemies, but I was certain that my fellow Earthlings did. They would relish the combat and so would choose the first option without hesitation.
However, it wasn’t for me. Plus, I didn’t want to scare away potential dates. I was already having enough trouble with romance.
The second item was far more fascinating. It wasn’t clear how beneficial it was, but at least it was clearly beneficial. Better than some other items I could name.
The blue flag was the frontrunner by far, in terms of usefulness. I could create points to Fast Travel to wherever I wanted. In essence, any place that I had been to, I could teleport to. Unrestricted teleportation of this kind would be extremely powerful. I would be a fool to pass it up.
My only concern was that the flag was considered consumable. Why would such an item be edible? I wondered if it was made of chocolate or something. If not chocolate, then definitely some other food item. That meant it was quite delicate. I would have to make a serious effort to not damage it. I couldn’t live with myself if such a valuable item broke after the first time I used it. What a tragedy that would be.
I chose the blue flag. When in my hand, it was sturdier than I guessed. “Maybe it’s made of rock candy,” I whispered to myself.
“Sit,” I heard Hyde say from across the room. When the mimic stayed firmly planted on the ground, she said, “Good boy.”
Why was she treating the mimic as if it was a dog?
“Eat,” she said. The mimic continued eating. “Good boy.”
Giving commands like that didn’t really work when the creature was already doing them. I didn’t want to ruin her fun, but it was getting late. “Ms Hyde, are you going to stay for much longer? I think it’s about time we head back.”
She was startled by my sudden voice. Her focus was completely on the mimic. She turned to me and said, “Yes. You’re right.” She gathered her belongings and got ready for the return trip. “I’ll walk you back. It’s dangerous for you to go out alone at this time of night.”
I felt a little emasculated by the offer, but I appreciated it nonetheless. “No thank you. You see, I have this thing called Fast Travel. I can teleport back home in an instant.”
Hyde raised her eyebrows. “Oh, impressive,” she said. “I think I’ll stay to watch you do that, if you don’t mind.”
I smiled. “I don’t mind at all.” Opening the map menu, I navigated to the home base icon. It was smaller than the icons for important locations like the King’s castle, but it was larger than the icons for small shops. I clicked on it in an attempt to Fast Travel, but nothing happened. I clicked again and nothing.
Could I only Fast Travel once? I clicked all over the map and the option to teleport did not show up. I was beginning to sweat until finally something I clicked had worked.
[Would you like to Fast Travel to the Eastern Forest Hidden Dungeon?]
It then became clear to me that I could only Fast Travel to my own properties. I felt a little embarrassed admitting this in front of Hyde so I said, “Never mind. I would rather take the scenic route and go with you, if that’s okay.”
Hyde knew I wasn’t telling her the full story but didn’t seem to care. We both left the dungeon together. Hyde stretched her toned body to prepare for the journey. Unexpectedly, she spread her arms and welcomed me into them. “Come here. It will be faster if I carry you. I can run faster than carriage drivers, and I want to see how fast I can sprint with my fixed back.”
I couldn’t help but blush a little. It was embarrassing to be carried home like a baby. Though, she was right to offer. It would take me several hours to walk back. In her arms, that time would be significantly reduced. I sheepishly accepted her offer and crawled into her arms.
