Chapter 62 – See Yourself Selflessly Sell Less Sea
I gazed at the blue sky above and contemplated. Newmill and Frome were quite angry about what I had done. At first, I thought it was because they didn’t know that I was truly much older. However, Newmill gave me the benefit of the doubt and still thought I committed a wrongdoing. That I couldn’t understand.
“Mummy, why is that boy lying on the floor?”
What sin was there in dressing myself up as my past self? I did not ask to be brought into this world or to be placed in the body of a child. How was it wrong for me to pretend to be the person that I knew I was? Even thinking of it from an outside perspective, if an adult looked like a child, I wouldn’t consider it a crime for them to make themselves appear older.
“Is that kid ok?”
I wanted to leave it at this: Newmill was too young to understand, and Frome was mistaken about my real identity. Those were the reasons that they were mad at me. Neither were my fault.
If that was how I honestly felt, I would have been able to get up, but my body was motionless, anchored to the ground. Only my eyes moved to track the floating clouds above.
“Is he performing a demonstration of some kind?”
This new body of mine was a deception, well and true. Of that I was certain, but was pretending to be my old self a deception too? Was it a lie for me to disguise myself as an adult, even though I was one?
I didn’t think so. Like I told Newmill, it was no different from wearing makeup. If a person could doll themselves up to look prettier, why couldn’t I change my appearance. By Newmill’s logic, a person who dyed their hair from brunette to blonde would be committing a faux pas.
“I think he’s just sunbathing.”
I always hated finding flaws in my own reasoning, and I had just done it. When it came to makeup and such, a person was not changing who they were. I was making my body leap from boy to man. It was obviously not the same thing as someone putting on eyeliner or lipstick.
No matter, I thought. I just had to explain why disguising myself was alright. That would be a simple enough task, I hoped.
“Excuse me, dear customer. You can’t lie down outside our establishment like this.”
I began comparing myself to another group of people who had been known to make drastic changes to their bodies: the transgenders. If a person felt as if they were born in the wrong body, they might change to suit the gender they believed their self to be. Wasn’t what I was doing in line with such a philosophy? I didn’t need long to come to the conclusion that no, it was not.
A transgender person made a claim that said: this is who I am. On the other hand, I was doing something much different. I was making people believe that I had a body that I didn’t actually have. Because I didn’t like how they distrusted my claim to adulthood, I forced them to accept who I was through deceit.
“Please move, boy. You’re scaring away our patrons.”
One thing I kept neglecting to think about was the deception. I had lied about meeting Frome for the first time, and I had lied about my name. I knew she wouldn’t have accepted me if she knew who I was, so I had to lie.
I remembered a news story I had once read in the Metro. A woman had deceived her friend by posing as a man. She pretended to be someone who she wasn’t to romance her friend who would have otherwise been uninterested in her. She received a hefty punishment as I recalled.
I had once scorned that woman for her actions. Now, I had done essentially the same thing.
“Someone call the guards please.”
What a fool I was. I’d have to apologise to Frome and Newmill.
The more I thought on my actions, the more self-pitying I seemed to become. My circumstance wasn’t unprecedented, not even on Earth. There lived many many people who were born with conditions that placed them in the same boat as me. Some people had genetic diseases that made them look like children their whole lives, and they weren’t throwing a tantrum like I was.
All of this could have been avoided if I had pursued Frome openly. Despite my body, I may have eventually been able to convince her that I was an adult. So much for that.
“That’s it! I’ve had enough.” Someone clung to my legs, swung me around, and flung me into an open dumpster.
“What the hell was that for?” I shouted. Banana peels and garbage stuck to my body.
“You’re banned from this place. Don’t come back!” The man who chucked me dusted off his hands.
That came out of nowhere.
