Chapter 3057: Getting To Know Elyon

Chapter 3057: Getting To Know Elyon

Elyon had finally begun to calm down.

His breathing had returned to normal, and the tremors in his limbs had stilled. But his curiosity—now fanned into a quiet flame—had not.

He glanced once more at the twin serpents now playfully coiled around Meng Bai’s arms, seemingly more like pets than divine beasts.

"I still can’t believe they’re traveling with you," Elyon muttered. "Even forming a decent relationship with one rare beast is hard enough, but taming—forget that—befriending beasts like these? That’s beyond reason."

Lin Mu simply smiled. "It wasn’t that hard, really."

"Oh?" Elyon raised an eyebrow, a bit of his sarcasm returning. "So what, they just found you charismatic and decided to follow you one day?"

"Not exactly," Lin Mu chuckled. "I knew their parents."

That made Elyon freeze for a second.

"You knew their parents?" he repeated, tone laced with incredulity.

Lin Mu nodded. "I raised them from the egg. Found them a long time ago, when I was far weaker. Their parents had... made a choice. The egg was abandoned, and would’ve died without care. I didn’t have the heart to leave them."

Elyon leaned back slightly, eyes wide, his expression shifting from disbelief to understanding.

"So that’s it..." he muttered. "Raising beasts from infancy. Of course."

Even mortals did it—domesticating spirit beasts or tamed animals from birth. It was far more effective than trying to tame a grown one.

But Yin-Yang Twin Serpents?

It was still absurd.

"They must be incredibly attached to you," Elyon said, watching the snakes nuzzle Meng Bai’s arms affectionately.

"They are," Lin Mu replied with a smile. "They’ve saved my life more than once. And I’ll do the same for them."

"Honestly... I thought you were just a prodigal sword cultivator," Elyon said, shaking his head. "But you keep surprising me."

He fell into a thoughtful silence after that, and for a while the only sounds were the soft hissing of the twins, the occasional chirp from Ashy, and the rustling of leaves from the breeze outside the courtyard.

Then Lin Mu turned his gaze toward the wolfkin. "I’ve been meaning to ask—what about you, Elyon? I don’t know much about your past. I’ve seen beastkin before, but I’ve never had much interaction with them."

Elyon looked away for a moment, his ears flicking slightly.

"My tribe... doesn’t exist anymore," he said at last, his tone quiet. "I’m from the Dark Wolf Tribe. We were hunters—known across the beastkin realms for our tracking skills and stealth abilities. There weren’t many of us to begin with, but we had pride. Discipline. Ancestral strength passed down through our blood."

Lin Mu listened silently, eyes attentive but calm.

"But that’s all gone now," Elyon continued. "Our home was destroyed. I was just a pup back then. Barely old enough to remember anything clearly. One day there was howling... the next, fire and screaming."

His hands curled slightly into fists.

"I don’t even know who did it. No one talks about the Dark Wolf Tribe anymore. Most beastkin I meet think I’m just another common dark-furred wolfkin. They don’t even recognize the tribal marks."

He raised a hand and pulled his collar down slightly, revealing a faintly glowing sigil along his collarbone—ancient, crescent-shaped, and furrowed like a scar branded with moonlight.

"It’s my goal to find out what really happened," Elyon said. "I’ve spent decades building my network. Taking jobs. Gathering scraps of knowledge. Sometimes I feel like I’m chasing ghosts... but I have to know. If any others survived. If there’s a home I can still return to. or at least a new one I can build."

Silence settled over the courtyard for a few long moments.

Meng Bai looked down, suddenly sober. Daoist Chu’s expression turned grim, and even the twin snakes paused in their play to glance at Elyon.

"I’m sorry," Lin Mu said softly.

"You don’t have to be," Elyon replied. "I’ve made my peace with the past. But if I can uncover the truth—if I can find the ones responsible..."

His eyes gleamed in the fading light.

"I’ll make sure they don’t get to erase history like that again."

"And your darkness abilities?" Lin Mu asked. "They’re from your tribe?"

Elyon nodded.

"We had a cultivation technique—one passed down only through bloodline recognition. It’s called the Umbral Veil. Only those with the Dark Wolf blood can cultivate it properly."

He opened his palm and summoned a stream of darkness that flowed like liquid ink, coiling in the air like a living ribbon.

"It’s more than just hiding in shadows. We sense with it. See with it. Even when light is gone, even when sound is stolen... we can hunt."

"I saw your illusion technique," Lin Mu said. "Using the darkness’ memories. That’s something I’ve never seen before."

"That’s part of it," Elyon replied. "The Umbral Veil teaches us to read the impressions of the world. Most people think only light reflects, but darkness... darkness absorbs. Everything that enters it leaves a trace."

Lin Mu’s eyes brightened with intrigue. "I see. That’s incredible."

Elyon gave a slight smirk. "Not as incredible as a guy who raised what are basically twin celestial snakes and casually tears open rifts in space like ripping paper."

Lin Mu laughed. "We all have our strengths."

"I’m starting to think I’ve joined a bunch of monsters," Elyon said, rolling his shoulders. "But... for once, I don’t mind. At least these monsters aren’t trying to kill me."

"We’re not," Meng Bai grinned. "We’re friends now!"

"Yeah..." Elyon exhaled slowly, his tail flicking once behind him. "Friends."

It was not often that Elyon got to call others friends. Sure there had been acquaintances who called him that, but he knew it was not a true connection. But with Lin Mu and his companions it truly seemed like it.

They continued to chat through the night as the wolfkin and humans grew closer along with some beasts. Elyon probably had the most genuine conversation in a long long time, perhaps even in his entire life.
