Chapter 7: Who is the Fool?
Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Who is the Fool?
In the past, whenever she heard words like that, she’d either fly into a rage or start a massive fight. She had never reacted by bursting into tears like this.
Her eyes glinted. ’That idiot Su Luoluo... how did she get so smart?’
"I just saw that Mother was angry, so..." Su Nuannuan bit her lip, her words trailing off as if she were hesitant to continue.
The implication was clear: while she may have misspoken, she had only done so because she saw how angry Lan Ya was.
Just as she intended, Lan Ya immediately took her side, comforting Su Nuannuan. "Don’t pay her any mind. This isn’t your fault. She’s the one who showed up late, and she has the nerve to say you weren’t here."
She patted Su Nuannuan’s hand. "We all know you went to let everyone know it was time to eat."
Su Nuannuan’s expression stiffened for a moment before she nodded meekly. "It doesn’t matter if I’m misunderstood. What’s most important is that Mother is happy."
With that, she pulled a bamboo tube from her robes and held it out. "Luoluo, yesterday you said you had lice. This is the medicine I brought for you."
Su Nuannuan basked in the admiring gazes of the onlookers, a deeper sense of satisfaction flashing in her eyes as she pushed the tube forward again.
She had originally planned to find a crowded place to present the "medicine" and cultivate a reputation as a ’virtuous sister’. She hadn’t expected such a large crowd so early in the morning. It seemed her effort in preparing a bottle of "lice removal medicine" wouldn’t be in vain.
After being so disgusted by Su Luoluo yesterday, she had washed her hair several times. Only after finding no trace of lice on herself did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
’Su Luoluo is so disgusting. How could a female be so unhygienic? She actually has lice.’
When she was leaving this morning, she’d remembered the incident. She grabbed a bamboo tube and casually poured in some nectar to pass it off as lice-killing medicine.
Her own hair was dark and lustrous; she’d never had lice in her life. How would she possibly have any real lice medicine?
Besides, the more disgusting Su Luoluo appeared, the better it was for her.
She couldn’t wait for everyone to despise Luoluo, especially the five Beastmen who should have been hers.
’If she hadn’t returned, they would have been mine.’
Su Luoluo glanced at the so-called "lice removal medicine." It lacked the distinct herbal aroma of a proper remedy. One look was all it took to know it was just a shoddy attempt to fool her.
’Trying to play the good person by bottling up who-knows-what? I’m not about to give her that chance.’
Su Luoluo sniffled, looking at her with a heartbroken expression. "Sister, have you forgotten? After you recoiled from me yesterday, I started picking them out myself. I spent all of last night doing it, and I’ve already gotten them all."
The group of people eating breakfast from their bowls now had some entertainment. All eyes darted over, fixed on the scene.
The crowd was somewhat surprised to hear Su Luoluo crying.
After all, Su Luoluo was known for her terrible temper and eccentric personality. She spent her days either smashing things or shouting at other tribe members. Crying was not something she did.
On top of that, she mentioned that Su Nuannuan had been disgusted by her.
Now *that* was interesting.
In truth, most people in the tribe disliked Su Luoluo.
She was ugly, fat, and dark-skinned, lazy in her chores, and never had a kind word for anyone.
But these were things people only thought privately; no one ever said them to her face.
Su Nuannuan, on the other hand, projected an image of being both beautiful and kind-hearted. She never seemed to look down on Su Luoluo, even tolerating it when Luoluo occasionally hit or cursed her.
So to hear Su Luoluo claim that Nuannuan was disgusted by her today... that was a little different from what everyone was used to seeing.
The gazes of the crowd began to shift, filled with a new kind of scrutiny.
Su Nuannuan hadn’t expected Su Luoluo to say that. It was true she had run away yesterday—the lice were just too disgusting—but she had also resolved to bring medicine for her today.
Hearing this, she quickly pushed the medicine forward again, explaining with the air of someone who had been misunderstood. "I wasn’t disgusted by you, really. I left yesterday specifically to prepare this medicine for you. You can’t get rid of lice completely just by picking them out. It’s better to use medicine."
Her words were spoken with such sincerity that everyone listening seemed to have a moment of enlightenment.
Hearing Su Luoluo baselessly accuse Su Nuannuan, Lan Ya couldn’t hold back her anger and snapped, "Why haven’t you taken the medicine your sister brought you? It’s only because she’s so forgiving that she’d still bring you medicine after you said something like that."
She then gave Luoluo a disdainful look. "If you don’t want people to be disgusted by you, then you shouldn’t be getting lice in the first place."
Hearing Lan Ya say this, the smile on Su Nuannuan’s lips grew wider.
Su Luoluo listened to the mother-daughter duo singing the same tune. Seeing how Lan Ya completely disregarded the original owner’s grievances, she sneered inwardly.
’No wonder the original owner did something as foolish as jumping into the river. Their ability to twist the truth is truly something else.’
’In the blink of an eye, they’ve reduced me to nothing.’
’You asked for this.’
A small smile touched Su Luoluo’s lips as she accepted the bamboo tube.
Su Nuannuan watched Su Luoluo suffer yet another setback and felt a rush of glee.
’And here I thought Su Luoluo had gotten smarter. Turns out she’s still the same old idiot.’
’Go on, put it on. Smear on a nice thick layer. It would be best if the lice multiplied even more.’
Su Luoluo took the tube and said, "Thank you, sister."
A moment later, she opened it. Seeing the nectar-like liquid inside, she feigned surprise. "Sister, what is this lice medicine made of? Why does it smell of nectar?"
Su Nuannuan’s eyes darted. ’Does this girl have the nose of a dog?’
’How could she possibly smell that?’
"It’s made from the usual herbs for lice. I just added a little nectar to make the scent more pleasant," Su Nuannuan replied quickly, inventing an excuse on the spot.
"Oh, so you used hundred ginseng, bitter grass, and Mugwort?"
Su Nuannuan had no idea which herbs were needed. Hearing the word "Mugwort," she vaguely felt it sounded correct, so she nodded. "That’s right. I used those ingredients."
The moment she said this, some of the people who knew about herbal remedies frowned. A few even shook their heads. "That’s not how you make lice medicine. The common recipe uses Centipede, white peony root, Sophora Root, and mugwort."
Hearing the murmurs of doubt from the crowd, Su Luoluo’s lips curled into a smirk.
’Idiot. I laid a trap, and you walked right into it.’
Realizing she had said the wrong thing, Su Nuannuan immediately backtracked. "Oh, it was Centipede and Sophora Root. I must have misremembered."
Su Luoluo raised an eyebrow and held the bamboo tube out to one of the people who had just spoken. "My sense of smell seems to be a little off. Could you smell this for me? Is there any scent of Centipede or Sophora Root? I’m starting to think my sister really did get it wrong."
Hearing her, a few of the more helpful onlookers leaned in for a sniff.
After they had each taken a turn, they all shook their heads. "I don’t smell them either. It mostly just smells like nectar."
An older female sniffed it and said, "There’s very little Centipede and Sophora Root in this. It would be best to use it sparingly."
Su Luoluo nodded. "I understand."
Su Nuannuan stood to the side, listening with growing embarrassment and humiliation. Finally, she could only say lamely, "Perhaps I added too much nectar."
Although the people present accepted her explanation, they were still left with a nagging question: why would you add nectar to lice medicine?
It seemed Su Nuannuan wasn’t quite as good to her sister as she made herself out to be.
Not wanting Su Nuannuan to remain the center of attention, Lan Ya changed the subject. She grabbed a few wild fruits and handed them to Su Luoluo. "Alright, Nuannuan has never had lice, so how would she know what the medicine is supposed to be like? It’s the thought that counts."
’After being berated for so long and even waiting in line, I thought breakfast would be something decent. But it’s just a few wild fruits.’
’If I’d known this was all it was, I wouldn’t have bothered coming.’
Su Luoluo glanced around. Other than Luan Ting, it seemed none of the other Beastmen had shown up.
’Looks like there was no reason for me to come to this breakfast after all.’
