Chapter 25: There’s No Escape
Chapter 25: Chapter 25: There’s No Escape
Upon hearing this, Lan Ya’s face instantly darkened, her expression as foul as a sewer.
She had wanted to use this as an opportunity to berate Su Luoluo, but to her surprise, the other woman didn’t care at all.
When they heard Su Luoluo was making her own breakfast, many people in the tribe grew restless.
After eating Su Luoluo’s beggar’s chicken the day before, everyone knew how delicious her cooking was.
Both Beastmen and females wanted to follow her and cook something together.
But out of deference to Lan Ya, they stayed put.
Su Luoluo had no idea what the tribe members were thinking. After parting on bad terms with Lan Ya, she ran toward the "treasure" spot she had found the day before.
She was thankful she had marked the location beforehand; otherwise, she would never have been able to find this spot again.
While looking for spices yesterday, she had discovered a patch of wild corn, as well as some wild peanuts.
From the outside, the corn was wrapped in bright green husks and looked plump, which meant it was probably ripe.
But to know if it was truly ripe, she would have to peel back the husk and see.
The peanut leaves were turning a little yellow. Generally, when the leaves begin to wither, it means the peanuts are nearing maturity and ready to be harvested.
Su Luoluo casually snapped off an ear of corn. She stripped away the outer green husk, then pulled off the layer of white silk clinging to the kernels. When she saw the bright yellow kernels lined up neatly like teeth, her eyes curved into a smile.
’This corn looks plump and the color is perfect. It must be ripe.’
She picked off a kernel and popped it into her mouth. A sweet flavor spread from the tip of her tongue. It was juicy and the kernel was quite tender, not tough at all.
In a flash, Su Luoluo picked another seven or eight cobs.
’There are no refrigerators in this primitive society; freshly picked is always best.’
She hadn’t planned on picking so many, but then she thought about how Fu Feng had saved her last night and the misunderstanding from this morning, so she picked a few more.
She figured she would make some extra breakfast and give some to him to get on his good side.
Of course, she couldn’t forget about Luan Ting either.
’Currying favor isn’t something you can do at the last minute. It has to be a subtle, persistent effort. If you do it enough, people’s impression of you will naturally improve.’
After she finished with the corn, she squatted down and pulled up a nearby peanut plant. Shaking off the loose black soil, Su Luoluo shelled a dirt-caked peanut. After revealing its pale skin, she popped it in her mouth.
It tasted a bit raw and wasn’t very sweet. ’Looks like these will have to wait.’
Still, the corn would be more than enough for breakfast.
Besides roasting a few ears of corn, Su Luoluo also planned to make some corn porridge.
If she had a pot and the right conditions, Su Luoluo would have loved to simply boil the corn.
This corn had just ripened, so it would be incredibly light and sweet if boiled.
To make corn porridge, she needed a container. Su Luoluo scanned her surroundings and found a large, spherical wild fruit to use as a substitute.
Su Luoluo didn’t know what it was called; she’d never seen one during the Post-apocalypse, but it looked a bit like a coconut.
However, its surface was smooth, and the flesh inside resembled a pomelo’s. Once the flesh was removed, it left a hemispherical shell that was perfect for cooking.
Afraid of another misunderstanding if she ran into Fu Feng at the deep pool again, Su Luoluo quickly washed the corn there before running back to her "treasure" spot.
Few people ever came here, and there were plenty of branches, making it easy to start a fire. For Su Luoluo, it was an excellent outdoor kitchen.
She shook the water from the corn, then took her stone knife and began shaving the kernels into her handmade earthen pot. Once the kernels filled about half the pot, she could start a fire and cook the porridge.
The stone knife wasn’t as sharp as a modern one; it was quite dull, and shaving the kernels was a laborious task for Su Luoluo.
Just as she was getting into the swing of her work, the system’s voice rang out.
"Ding! Congratulations, Host. A romance target’s Expected Meeting Value has increased by five points."
’What?’
Hearing this, Su Luoluo nearly sliced her hand.
’I didn’t mishear that, did I?’
’A romance target is looking forward to meeting me.’
’Is this person crazy or just an idiot?’
’No, wait. I’m so ugly. Why on earth would someone be looking forward to meeting me?’
’But more than that, I really want to know who it is.’
However, before she could ask the system, a hand holding a duck egg appeared in front of her.
The sudden appearance of the hand made Su Luoluo jump. Seeing who it was, she breathed a sigh of relief. "Xiao Ye, what are you doing? You can scare someone to death sneaking up like that!"
Xiao Ye heard her and said flatly, "These six eggs are for you."
"Huh?" Su Luoluo thought she must have misheard. "What did you say?"
Xiao Ye repeated himself. "There are six eggs in total. I’ll give you three, but you have to cook fried eggs for me."
Hearing that, Su Luoluo’s racing heart finally settled back into her chest.
This was the first time Xiao Ye had ever swallowed his pride and spoken to Su Luoluo like this.
Heaven only knew how much he’d had to psych himself up just for a taste of her food.
He had tried to convince himself to forget about it, but the taste of those eggs and yesterday’s beggar’s chicken was simply too incredible.
After tasting such delicacies, the thought of going back to eating cold, slimy, and slightly fishy raw eggs made him lose his appetite completely.
’Giving Su Luoluo half of the eggs I found... that’s not a bad deal for her, right?’
Su Luoluo glanced at him and continued with her work. "I can’t make fried eggs."
Xiao Ye stiffened. "You’re not willing to cook for me?"
’Su Luoluo is always trying to please me. Why the sudden change today?’
"I’m not being that petty. I just don’t have any castor oil, so I can’t," Su Luoluo said in a flat tone.
Xiao Ye’s expression softened slightly when he heard that.
He had seen her prepare that stuff she mentioned before. A quick scan of the area confirmed there was none around. He regretfully withdrew his hand and was about to turn and leave.
Watching him pull his hand back, Su Luoluo said casually, "What’s the rush? We can’t have fried eggs, but we can have something else."
"Something else?" Though Xiao Ye was puzzled, he extended his hand toward Su Luoluo once more.
Su Luoluo smiled at his pragmatic gesture. ’I never thought a snake would be such a foodie.’
After a moment, she said, "We can make soft-yolked eggs."
Xiao Ye didn’t know what soft-yolked eggs were, but since Su Luoluo said she could make them, all he had to do was eat.
He immediately nodded. "Okay."
Since they were having a meal together, Su Luoluo didn’t stand on ceremony.
As she continued shaving corn kernels, she instructed Xiao Ye, "Then go get another ’pot’ from a tree, one like mine. We’ll need it to cook the eggs."
Although Xiao Ye found it a bit strange that Su Luoluo was ordering him around, he didn’t refuse. He had helped her get some banana leaves last time, after all.
For him, getting a fruit to use for cooking was not a difficult task.
He thought it was perfectly normal, but Mo Xuan, who was hiding just outside the woods and witnessing everything, was stunned.
’Since when is Xiao Ye so obedient to Su Luoluo?’
Xiao Ye chose a large Black Jia Fruit and plucked it from the tree. Just as he tossed it to the ground, his eyes scanned the surroundings, and he called out, "Since you’re here, come out. Stop hiding."
Su Luoluo was completely bewildered until she saw the tall, long-legged Mo Xuan approaching from a distance.
’What’s he doing here, too?’
She asked tentatively, "Are you also here for food?"
The small grove fell silent. Back in the tribe, however, Su Nuannuan was as busy as a bee.
She glanced around; the Beastmen were all out hunting, and the females were busy washing clothes.
All alone, she stealthily found Su Luoluo’s beast skin bedding and poured the juice of a seduction fruit onto it.
’This time, Su Luoluo, you won’t be able to escape.’
