Chapter 102 - 104: Plenty of Beastmen
Chapter 102: Chapter 104: Plenty of Beastmen
Luan Ting’s back was broad, and as he carried her, Su Luoluo felt a reassuring sense of security.
At first, Su Luoluo was a little embarrassed about Luan Ting carrying her on his back, worried that people would stare.
But when they went outside, she saw many other females being carried in the arms of their Beastman partners. Some were even clinging to their necks as if they were joined at the hip.
’I guess I’m just too old-fashioned,’ Su Luoluo thought. Compared to them, she felt like a kindergartener. Besides, no one was paying her any mind anyway.
When they had arrived at the temple yesterday, the sky was already dark. She had only been able to make out its general silhouette and hadn’t gotten a clear look at the surrounding area.
Now that she was outside in the daylight, Su Luoluo realized the temple was built from white granite.
Against the backdrop of the blue sky and white clouds, it looked both sacred and solemn.
Its structure was nothing like the semi-subterranean dwellings they were used to; it was a proper, square-shaped building.
Just beyond the temple lay a vast forest.
Despite being on a mountaintop, the trees were plentiful and entirely different from the scrubby bushes they had seen at the mountain’s base.
Su Luoluo examined the area more closely. ’It’s probably because the temple was built on the sunny side of the mountain,’ she surmised. ’That’s why the trees grow so well here.’
The other females and Beastmen were also in the woods, foraging for wild fruit.
Luan Ting, still carrying Su Luoluo, asked, "Where should we go?"
Su Luoluo scanned the area. "Over there!"
If she wasn’t mistaken, that patch should be full of raspberries.
The raspberries from yesterday had been delicious, and Su Luoluo was craving more.
Luan Ting didn’t say anything, simply heading in the direction Su Luoluo had pointed.
When he saw the patch of red ahead, he smiled. "If you wanted to eat more of these wild berries, you just had to say so. I would have picked them for you. You don’t need to have them for breakfast."
Wild berries were tasty, but they weren’t filling. After such a tiring day yesterday, they needed to eat something substantial.
Su Luoluo smiled faintly. "I have something else in mind. Go find a few eggs, and I’ll make you something delicious."
Seeing that Su Luoluo had a plan, Luan Ting nodded and went off to find some eggs.
Meanwhile, Su Luoluo stayed put and began picking raspberries.
She was picking these raspberries to make some raspberry tarts.
If only she had an oven, Su Luoluo would have loved to make a raspberry cake.
’Still, raspberry tarts aren’t a bad alternative,’ she thought.
She picked the raspberries one by one, and soon her palm was filled with a patch of vibrant red.
As Su Luoluo picked the berries, she deliberately glanced around. Spotting a rustling figure nearby, she smiled to herself.
’That Yan Shu is really something else.’
Luan Ting was quick. In no time, he returned with several wild eggs.
By then, she had also gathered a good number of raspberries.
Since cooking would take time, Su Luoluo had Luan Ting wash the raspberries.
There were still some of the pan-fried tea leaves left from yesterday, so Su Luoluo decided to use them to make tea eggs.
Su Luoluo placed the wild eggs in a pot of cold water, added a small spoonful of salt, and brought it to a boil. Then, she removed the eggs.
She plunged them into a bowl of cold water. Once they were cool enough to handle, she gently tapped the shells with a clay spoon until they were covered in fine cracks.
Next, she added the star anise, cinnamon, and bay leaves she had prepared earlier, followed by a sprinkling of tea leaves.
She had picked these spices near her "wild kitchen" back home. Worried she wouldn’t find them elsewhere, she’d brought them along on the journey, and now they were proving useful.
While waiting for the tea eggs to steep in the flavorful broth, she started working on the raspberry tarts.
She chopped the raspberries Luan Ting had washed, using a stone knife. Then, she put them in another pot where she had heated and melted some lard.
After sautéing them for a bit, she added honey and then a slurry of cornstarch.
The cornstarch was also something Su Luoluo had brought with her.
Once the cornstarch had thickened the mixture, Su Luoluo cooked it down until the excess moisture evaporated. She then shaped the filling into small squares.
Just then, the tea eggs were also done.
The rich aroma of the tea and the sweet fragrance of the raspberry tarts once again spread through the air.
The bushes nearby began to stir again. Su Luoluo glanced over with a smile. "You can come out! Any later and there won’t be any left."
Yan Shu was embarrassed at first to have been caught spying so easily by Su Luoluo.
But everything smelled so incredibly fragrant that she couldn’t help herself.
Hearing Su Luoluo call out to her, she walked over cheerfully. "Can I have some?"
Su Luoluo shook her head. Yan Shu’s face fell instantly. "If there’s nothing for me to eat, then why did you call me over?"
’She really wears her heart on her sleeve,’ Su Luoluo thought, handing her a few of the raspberry tarts. Then, she took some tea leaves and spices from her Beast Skin Bag and passed them over as well.
"I can give you a few of these raspberry tarts, but I didn’t make enough tea eggs to share. You’ll have to make your own," Su Luoluo said with a tease in her voice. "You’ve been watching me for so long, you must have learned how by now, right?"
Yan Shu’s face flushed slightly, but she quickly began to eat the raspberry tarts in her hand.
Her eyes lit up after the first bite. "Su Luoluo, this is amazing! You have to come with me to Cedar Mountain!"
"Go to Cedar Mountain?" Su Luoluo glanced at Luan Ting, then looked back at Yan Shu with a smile. "And bring him with me?"
Yan Shu knew Su Luoluo was teasing her, but she didn’t mind at all.
There were plenty of Beastmen in the world, but there was only one Su Luoluo who could cook food this delicious.
She nodded without hesitation. "Of course! I can even introduce you to my brother. He’s really handsome."
Then, as if remembering something, she added with a hint of playful spite, "He’s just as good-looking as this one here, maybe even more handsome."
Luan Ting was rendered speechless by her comment and pointedly ignored Yan Shu.
Su Luoluo, on the other hand, was rather surprised. "Are you sure?"
’This young female is really something else. Just a while ago, she was chasing Luan Ting like her life depended on it, and now she’s giving up on him just like that.’
Yan Shu misunderstood her and nodded eagerly. "Of course! My brother is way more handsome than him. When you get there, you can make him your Beastman partner."
Su Luoluo froze. That wasn’t what she meant at all.
Hearing this, Luan Ting shot a dark look at Su Luoluo.
Su Luoluo felt a chill run down her spine and immediately changed the subject. "Uh... we can talk about that later, when I have more time."
Su Luoluo knew perfectly well that the young female had likely just fallen in love with her cooking, and that’s why she was saying all this.
Besides, if her brother was really as handsome as she claimed, why would he be interested in her? Even she thought her current appearance was lacking.
’That poor brother, being sold off by his own sister without even knowing it.’
’What a touching pair of siblings. Truly.’
Yan Shu finished the raspberry tarts and licked her lips. "You’re always welcome to visit my home, Luoluo. By the way, about that milk tea from yesterday... could you tell me how to make it? I want to learn so I can make it myself when I get back."
Su Luoluo didn’t hide a thing, generously explaining the whole process to her.
Yan Shu nodded eagerly. "I get it! Thanks, Luoluo! From now on, we’re best friends, okay?"
Su Luoluo smiled and nodded. "Okay, best friends."
’What a strange way to make a friend.’
’It feels like my love rival just became my best friend.’
