Chapter 347
Chapter 347: Chapter 347
The group made their way down the mountain path carved out by the Giants.
Calling it a path, however, was generous. It was more like a trench crushed into existence by the sheer force of the Giants’ feet.
Trees on both sides had been uprooted and lay scattered across the snow, their roots pointing toward the sky. The snow beneath their feet had been packed solid, forming a hard, icy crust that crunched loudly with every step and made walking extremely uncomfortable.
The air was filled with a pungent mixture of sweat and blood.
Before long, they reached the bottom of the valley.
As the rumbling caused by the migrating Giants’ destructive advance echoed in the distance, Hagrid glanced at Lynn, who was hurrying along while carrying his trunk, and wondered what exactly he intended to do.
"Stop!"
Madame Maxime’s voice came from up ahead. She extended an arm, blocking Lynn’s path.
"Mr. Lynn, this distance should be close enough. If we go any farther, we may be discovered."
Her gaze shifted from Lynn’s face to the forest in the distance.
"Can you tell us how you intend to proceed now?"
Lynn chuckled, placed the trunk on the ground, and opened it.
Then, lowering his voice, he called into it,
"Opal!"
"What is that?" Hagrid asked in confusion, leaning forward and craning his neck to peer inside.
The next second, a thunderous dragon roar erupted from the trunk, and a massive adult dragon appeared out of thin air before them.
"Oh, Merlin..." Madame Maxime muttered.
She stared dumbfounded at the enormous creature before her. Her pupils contracted sharply, and she instinctively took two steps back.
"An Antipodean Opaleye..." Hagrid murmured as he gazed at Opal.
The Antipodean Opaleye was native to Australia and regarded as one of the most beautiful dragons in the world.
Its pearlescent scales shimmered with iridescent colors beneath the sunlight. Its eyes had no visible pupils and resembled a pair of opals, hence the species’ name.
Its flames were pearly white and extraordinarily hot, capable of melting rock into magma. It was also one of the largest dragon species in existence, with an adult wingspan reaching between fifty and sixty feet.
"Roar. (Hello.)"
Opal lowered its head, looked curiously at Hagrid, and let out a soft chirp.
Hagrid instinctively reached out, wanting to pet Opal.
Madame Maxime, however, had no intention of letting him have his way. She raised one leg and kicked Hagrid squarely in the backside.
Hagrid stumbled forward and fell face-first into the snow.
After steadying himself, he turned around and stared at Madame Maxime in disbelief.
"You’ve lost your mind, Hagrid!" Madame Maxime shouted with a frown. "That is a dragon!"
Opal blinked, tilted its head, and looked at Hagrid before letting out another questioning chirp.
"Roar? (You’re not going to pet me anymore?)"
Fine. Pet it if you wanted, or don’t.
Opal turned toward Lynn, lowered its head, and affectionately rubbed its nose against his shoulder.
Then it rubbed against him again.
Lynn raised a hand and patted its head.
Opal narrowed its eyes in enjoyment, releasing a satisfied rumble from its throat. Lynn’s hand slid from the top of its head to the bridge of its nose, then down toward the edge of its nostrils, rubbing gently.
Opal’s nostrils flared, releasing a small wisp of white smoke.
Lynn withdrew his hand and pointed toward the distant forest, which had become much quieter than before.
"Go breathe fire on them. Aim for their leader and blast him with everything you have. If you can’t kill him, lure him away."
Opal nodded, spread its wings, and flew toward the distant forest.
Watching Opal soar into the distance, Hagrid murmured,
"It truly is beautiful... isn’t it?"
No one answered him.
Madame Maxime silently stared at Lynn for several seconds.
"This is what you call ’quietly taking out Karkus’?"
Lynn shrugged, looking completely justified.
"No one knows it was us."
He turned his head and looked at Madame Maxime.
"Isn’t that quiet enough?"
The corner of Madame Maxime’s mouth twitched.
"What if it can’t take out Karkus?"
Lynn thought for a moment.
"Then we’ll have to step in ourselves."
"But will Opal be all right?" Hagrid asked worriedly.
"It might not be able to defeat Karkus, but there’s no chance it’ll be unable to escape."
...
Meanwhile, Opal quickly caught up with the group of Giants, who had gathered into a massive cluster and were warily surveying their surroundings.
They stood back-to-back, forming a seemingly impenetrable wall. In their hands, they gripped all kinds of weapons—wooden clubs, giant axes, stone hammers, and even several iron swords that looked incredibly heavy.
Because Opal made no attempt to conceal its approach, the Giants didn’t even need to look up to realize that something was swooping down on them from the sky.
They immediately raised their weapons toward Opal and let out a series of warning roars.
Opal, however, couldn’t have cared less.
No matter how loudly they shouted, could they fly up and hit it?
If they could, Opal would change its name to Chicken!
No matter how powerful a Giant’s legs were, there was no way one could leap hundreds of feet into the air.
The instant Opal reached its target, a torrent of scorching dragon fire poured down from above the Giants’ heads.
Boom—!!!
The dragon fire struck the Giants, burning through their animal-hide clothing, scorching their skin, and causing them to howl in agony.
With that single attack from Opal, the tightly clustered formation of Giants instantly scattered.
To escape the flames raining down from the sky, the Giants even began shoving one another aside in their desperation to reach safer, more open ground.
Shoving turned into pushing.
Pushing turned into pulling.
And pulling turned into—a fight.
At that moment, a Giant clad in armor from head to toe and standing nearly twenty feet tall brandished his sword and roared, trying to quiet the chaotic group.
The result, however...
It was as though he hadn’t roared at all.
Karkus’s roars were nothing more than the sound of wind passing through their ears, leaving no trace behind.
Enraged, Karkus snapped off the trunk of a nearby tree and hurled it toward Opal with all his strength.
The tree trunk spun through the air, producing a piercing whistle as it flew directly toward the dragon.
Opal simply turned aside and easily dodged it.
It looked back at the Giant who had thrown the tree trunk.
This one is the biggest. He must be the leader.
Opal immediately breathed another torrent of dragon fire directly at Karkus.
Wherever the flames passed, the air distorted, leaving a scorching trail behind them.
Karkus raised the sword in his hand and swung it with all his might.
A flash of silver light streaked through the air.
The moment the dragon fire touched the blade, it was split in two and scattered in opposite directions.
The two halves of the dragon fire struck the ground on either side of Karkus, blasting open two enormous craters and sending gravel and sparks flying everywhere.
Opal narrowed its eyes and shifted its gaze from Karkus to the sword in his hand.
It seems I can’t kill this guy with fire.
Opal’s mind began working rapidly—assuming it had much of a brain to begin with.
Its gaze moved from Karkus to the other Giants, who were still fleeing in every direction nearby.
Hmm... I’ll blast them instead.
Opal’s strategy was very simple: If you’re strong, I’ll dodge. If you’re weak, I’ll attack. If you chase me, I’ll run. If you stop chasing me, I’ll come back and attack your underlings.
Thus, a bizarre scene unfolded across the battlefield.
The Giants ran across the ground.
Opal chased them through the sky.
And Karkus chased after Opal.
Before long, the Giants were scattered everywhere. Their originally tight formation had completely collapsed, with dozens of Giants dispersed across an area spanning several kilometers.
Under Opal’s deliberate provocation, Karkus became completely enraged.
He roared continuously, his mind consumed by thoughts of how he could kill Opal.
Just then, the Giants gradually recovered from their initial panic.
Some of the smarter ones began imitating Karkus, hurling whatever weapons they had at Opal.
Wooden clubs, giant axes, stone hammers, iron swords—anything and everything they could get their hands on.
The weapons came flying from every direction. Some were accurately aimed, while others flew nowhere near their target.
Gradually, dodging the attacks became somewhat strenuous for Opal.
It had to watch for attacks coming from different directions, judge the trajectory of every weapon, and perform the appropriate evasive maneuvers—all at the same time.
Its wings beat faster, its body twisted and turned more frequently, and its breathing gradually grew heavier.
Moreover, the Death Eaters hidden among the Giants had also begun attacking.
Realizing that the situation was turning against it, Opal dodged several more spells, blasted a previously injured Giant with another burst of dragon fire, and turned to flee.
Its master had told it that this was called a "strategic retreat."
Opal found the term very dignified.
Karkus stood beside the Giant who had been burned to death by the dragon fire. He looked down at the still-smoking corpse and let out a furious roar.
"I will kill you!!!"
Opal turned its head to look at Karkus, its mouth curling into a mocking smile.
Then—
Its tongue flicked out, wagging in the air as it bobbed up and down several times.
Bleh, bleh, bleh~
Seeing this, Karkus completely lost his temper.
Now, his only desire was to catch up to Opal, seize it with his bare hands, and hack it in half with his sword.
When Opal saw Karkus chasing after it, the curve of its mouth widened even further.
It turned its head forward and continued flying.
Karkus chased Opal farther and farther away, gradually veering off course.
He kept running until—
He had no idea where he was.
Opal circled over the valley once before landing on an enormous boulder.
Karkus stood in the middle of the valley, panting heavily, his eyes fixed intently on Opal.
"Run," he rasped hoarsely. "Why aren’t you running anymore?"
Opal tilted its head, looked at Karkus, and released another dragon roar filled with mockery.
"I will kill you!"
Lynn hovered in midair, watching Opal lead Karkus around like a dog, and nodded in satisfaction.
Immediately afterward, he turned toward Hagrid and Madame Maxime below and shouted,
"I’m going to deal with the Death Eaters! I’ll leave Karkus to you!"
With that, Lynn disappeared almost instantly, not even waiting for the two of them to respond.
