Chapter 214 - 80: A New Idea
Escaping the Glazed Tower wasn’t difficult.
With the credentials the maintenance workers had given them, the group left the Glazed Tower with ease. After returning to the bar, they had a good night’s sleep, and when they woke up, it was time to reap their rewards.
The earlier move to have the Bartender leverage a bet on Luminous Heavy Industry’s stock falling had brought in a hefty profit.
Duan Fei had previously given him 1.5 million morality. The Bartender added his own savings of 100,000, mortgaged his bar, and scraped together two million.
After that, he used fifty-times leverage, turning that capital into one hundred million, and went all-in on shorting Luminous Heavy Industry.
Shorting here was similar to how it works in reality: use the one hundred million as collateral to borrow one hundred million worth of stock from the market, then sell it to acquire morality.
Once the stock price dropped, you’d buy the stock back to return it and get your original collateral back.
Thanks to the chaos from last night, with the Bartender’s journalist friend fanning the flames, Luminous Heavy Industry’s stock price was cut in half overnight. This made the profit from the operation a staggering figure.
After securing the funds, the Bartender looked at the number in his account, then glanced at Duan Fei.
He then kept twenty percent of his own share and transferred the remaining morality to Duan Fei, remarking with emotion, "I always thought of myself as pretty detached, but after seeing this much morality, even I feel like I’m losing my composure."
"Is it that crazy?" asked Hyena, who was beside him getting accustomed to his body with Lear’s help. "How much is it, five million?"
"You’re off by a zero."
Hyena swayed and nearly fell to the floor.
Fifty million morality was a number he would never even dare to dream of.
The thought of that number just sitting in Duan Fei’s account made him blurt out, "Duan Someone, if you die, make sure you transfer the money out first!"
"None of your damn business. Go train."
Staring at the number on the screen, Duan Fei felt nothing.
After all, morality from a dungeon couldn’t be exchanged for Abyss Coins. Something you couldn’t take with you was ultimately just toilet paper in an outhouse—the used kind.
The Lone Ranger sat exhaustedly on a chair, his Shadow Energy dim and faint.
Last night, Duan Fei had told him to cause as much of a ruckus as possible, and he had delivered.
He had lured a mechanical centipede to crawl all over the exterior of the Glazed Tower. The fifteen minutes of deafening noise ensured everyone nearby could hear it, and he posted the incident online.
Afterward, he also left proof that the "Salted Fish Squad" had reached the 300th floor and sent that proof to the Bartender’s journalist friend.
To do this, he had severely overdrawn his Shadow Energy. The Shadow Energy within him was pitifully low, and he would need some time to recover.
Just as he was feeling too tired to speak, Duan Fei pushed a mountain-like pile of donuts toward him. "Good work. This is your reward. All-natural sweets aren’t that easy to find."
Looking at the pile of snacks, the Lone Ranger suddenly felt that Duan Fei wasn’t so bad after all.
After placating his teammate and sorting through their gains, Duan Fei sipped his coffee and gazed into the distance, estimating that the time was about right.
And Luminous Heavy Industry’s Reaction was indeed as swift as Duan Fei had expected.
At ten in the morning, a swarm of drones appeared above the bar. Mercenaries in black suits jumped down from the drones, surrounding the establishment.
These people were all quite good-looking, but they had a subtle, inhuman air about them, giving them a strange and terrifying aura.
They didn’t carry weapons, but they themselves were the weapons.
Led by a middle-aged man, two men in suits walked into the bar. Their eyes swept over the layout before locking onto Duan Fei.
"Mr. Duan Someone?" the middle-aged man in the lead asked.
"That’s me. What can I do for you?" Duan Fei said, holding his coffee cup.
"We are the mercenary legion under Luminous Heavy Industry, the Puppet Legion. You are under arrest for suspected attacks and infiltration against Luminous Heavy Industry last night."
"Don’t be ridiculous. I’m acting according to the contract," Duan Fei said with a smile, taking out the document. "Article 9, Section 15: We have the right to use any means necessary for the intrusion and cannot be held accountable afterward."
A gunshot rang out. A hole was punched through the contract in Duan Fei’s hand. The one who fired was the young man next to the captain.
Duan Fei didn’t hold back either. He pointed at the man and shouted, "Lock the door and release the dog!"
It was quiet for a moment, then came Hyena’s resigned voice, "So, am I the dog you’re talking about?"
"Who else?"
"Sigh..."
Hyena sighed, spread his hands, and walked toward the man.
This gesture was usually meant to show he was unarmed and not a threat, but to the young man, the move carried an extraordinary deterrent force.
Decisively swapping magazines, the young man fired repeatedly at Hyena.
His prosthetic eye could lock onto a fly a kilometer away. His AI could calculate an opponent’s every trajectory. The pistol in his hand could auto-calibrate, allowing him to hit every shot even with his eyes closed.
But against Hyena, all of it was useless.
The mecha-muscles gave Hyena not only unbelievable destructive power but also a keen sense for danger.
Without needing to consciously control his body, he just had to leave everything to his mecha-muscles. He could dodge the bullets in the most natural way, drifting toward his opponent like a gentle breeze over flowing water. Then, he grabbed the man’s neck and gave it a light shake.
A pulse of force entered the body. The continuous waves of power began to destroy the man’s cybernetic frame, causing every component to rebel. Everything below his neck—the parts that defy description—shattered into dust.
The Puppet Legion’s modification surgery was quite terrifying. Apart from his brain, the rest of this young man’s body had been entirely replaced with machinery.
Hyena’s movements were completely beyond the young man’s imagination, leaving him to stare dumbfounded at Hyena, unable to utter a single word.
Tossing the remaining head to the middle-aged man, Hyena returned to Duan Fei’s side and quietly watched the two members of the Puppet Legion.
Duan Fei, for his part, made a "please" gesture. "Now, can you speak to me properly?"
The captain glanced at the head in his hand, then at Hyena beside Duan Fei. The built-in calculator in his brain ran at high speed, the sound of his liquid-cooling system so loud that even Duan Fei could hear it.
After reassessing their strength, he sat down, lowered his head, and said earnestly, "My apologies. I was rude before."
"He knows when to yield and when to stand firm. A real talent," said Yan Yuan from Duan Fei’s shoulder. "Master, you said you were going to make him lick my..."
"Shut up!"
"I’m not done yet! I guarantee you’ll get a mental image as soon as I finish."
"I don’t want to hear it. Just be good and shut up. I don’t want to be disturbed."
"But..."
Tossing Yan Yuan aside, Duan Fei said to the captain, "Alright, what is it you want?"
"The mercenary squad that breached the Glazed Tower’s defenses cannot be you. It can only be us, the Puppet Legion. I’m here to persuade you to give that honor to us."
"And if I say no?"
"Then we will have no choice but to physically eliminate you. And if we can’t manage that, then we will have to resort to our satellite weapon."
Remembering that terrifying satellite weapon, even Duan Fei felt a bit helpless.
That thing wasn’t something an ordinary person could fight against.
However, looking at the captain in front of him, Duan Fei had another good idea.
’Perhaps bringing Luminous Heavy Industry into this wouldn’t be a bad idea.’
