Chapter 99: Volume 1, Chapter 99: ADifferent Curve

The video room at Alcochete

smelled faintly of morning espresso and damp turf. At seven-thirty on Thursday

morning, before the full squad gathered on the pitch, Rayan sat in the front

row facing the main projection screen.

Rui Amorim did not start the

tape with Rayan’s goal against Farense, nor the cutback to Victor Gyoker that

had produced Sporting’s second.

The first clip showed Rayan

receiving near the left touchline with his body upright. Farense’s right-back

leaned through the contact and took the ball cleanly. Rui let the image run

once, then moved to the delayed pass towards Pedro Gonsalves.

"Where was the return

pass?" Rui asked, his voice flat as he held the laser pointer on the

screen.

"Inside, before my second

touch."

"When did the lane

close?"

"Before I set my

feet."

"What did the defender

already know?"

"That I wanted to come

inside onto my right."

Rui advanced to the pressing

mistake. Rayan ran directly at the full-back while the pass back to the

centre-back remained open.

"And there?"

"I chased the ball. I left

the pass back."

Only then did Rui play the

assist and the weak-side goal. The cutback showed the moving reception, early

release and continued run. The goal showed Rayan attacking space without

demanding another touch first.

"On Tuesday, the feint

ends before the first step begins," Falcão said, keeping his tone

measured. "Against Farense, the two actions overlap. That is the

difference."

"One clean action proves

the movement worked once," Rui said, closing the video file. "It does

not prove you can repeat it when the defender is waiting. Out on the pitch.

Now."

The morning sun had barely

cleared the trees lining Pitch 2 when the squad split into functional groups.

Tiago Leal was waiting at the edge of the eighteen-yard box.

Before the first rep, Rui

walked over to Tiago and spoke to him privately for ten seconds. Tiago nodded,

adjusted his stance, and settled into a low, patient shape. He knew exactly

what was coming.

Rayan received the ball wide

from the central midfielder, set his feet, and drove straight towards Tiago’s

outside shoulder. He executed the Body Feint. Dropping his shoulder hard to the

inside, planting his left foot, and snapping his hips to explode into the

corridor.

Tiago didn’t bite. He didn’t

drop his weight or step towards the dummy. Having been briefed, he simply held

his ground, slid half a step to his right, and met Rayan’s exit stride with a

firm, legal shoulder that knocked Rayan off balance and sent the ball out for a

throw-in.

Frustration surged instantly

through Rayan’s chest. The movement that had felt sharp and fluid the previous

morning had crashed against a prepared brick wall.

"Again," Rui called

out from the touchline, hands tucked in his jacket pockets. "This time he

knows what you want."

Rayan retrieved a fresh ball.

He didn’t repeat the exact entry. As the next pass arrived, he varied his

approach speed, taking his first touch while already moving laterally to change

Tiago’s line of sight. He offered a quick flash of the outside channel, forcing

Tiago’s lead boot to shift slightly. When Tiago held his ground to protect the

exit lane, Rayan didn’t force the duel. He clipped a sharp, first-time pass

back to the supporting pivot, continued his run into the pocket behind Tiago,

and received the return pass in space.

On the next repetition, Rayan

attacked with direct intent. He drove inside, showed the disguised touch

towards the centre, and the moment Tiago hesitated, trying to guess whether

Rayan would lay it off or take the burst. Rayan snapped his hips into the

Explosive Exit. The subtle shift in Tiago’s weight gave Rayan the half-yard he

needed to sweep past the covering angle.

Tiago recovered towards the box

before Rayan could turn the separation into a shot. Rayan released a low

cutback towards the supporting midfielder instead of forcing another touch. Rui

allowed the action to continue without praise.

The session shifted immediately

into a high-intensity defensive transition drill. Rayan was tasked with

trigger-pressing the opposition centre-back as the ball travelled across the

backline.

On his first attempt, Rayan

sprinted directly at the ball-carrier in a straight line. Coatez stepped past

him with a simple, cushioned lay-off, using the wide-open return lane Rayan had

failed to cover.

"Rayan!" Rui called

from the touchline. "Curve the run. Block the pivot, then press."

Rayan acknowledged the

instruction with a sharp nod. On the very next sequence, as the centre-back

received the transfer, Rayan took a curved, arc-shaped recovery path. He kept

his body positioned to blind-side the central passing lane while accelerating

at the ball-carrier. The centre-back was forced to play a hurried long ball

under pressure, turning over possession.

On the following repetition,

Rayan curved the run correctly again, but the wing-back behind him arrived

late. The possession side bounced the ball around Sporting’s trap and escaped

into midfield. Rui stopped the drill with one raised hand. "Your angle was

right. The line was late. Pressing still needs everyone." Rayan reset the rep.

From the sideline, Duarte stood

near the drinks station, watching the rep. He didn’t look angry, but his eyes

were fixed on Rayan’s recovery speed. He had seen Tiago shut down the initial

feint, and he had just watched Rayan adapt within three repetitions.

Duarte glanced back towards

Tiago, then returned to his own group without answering.

At the edge of Pitch 2, Rayan

bent to loosen his boots before heading towards the recovery facility. The

familiar translucent interface materialised quietly across his field of vision.

The smoked-black panel expanded as a second group of messages appeared beneath

the proficiency updates.

[DEVELOPMENT BREAKTHROUGH

CONFIRMED.] [Explosive Exit: Novice 24% → 32%.] [Body Feint: Basic 18% → 23%.]

[First-Touch Escape: Novice 48% → 54%.] [Development Class unlocked: ASCENDING

PRODIGY.] [Competitive learning conversion increased.] [Match Impact Reports

unlocked.] [Skill Fusion paths unlocked.] [High-pressure adaptation objectives

unlocked.] [Instant mastery remains unavailable.]

Rayan stared at the

notification. The new class simply meant that his deliberate practice,

mechanical corrections, and adaptation under pressure would convert into

permanent structural gains at a higher rate. The hard work on the grass was

still entirely his to execute.

Inside the coaches’ room

overlooking the training complex, Rui Amorim sat at his desk with Falcão

standing beside him. On the primary screen was the provisional roster for the

Algarve pre-season camp.

"He corrected the pressing

arc on the second rep," Falcão said, placing a tablet on the desk.

"And once Tiago adjusted to the feint, Rayan varied his entries instead of

forcing the same line."

Rui tapped his pen against the

wooden surface, looking out the window at the players heading towards the

cafeteria.

"The correction speed is

real," Rui said quietly. "It is faster than we expected."

"Does he make the final

Algarve squad list?" Falcão asked.

Rui closed the folder without

answering immediately. "We finalise the roster tonight."
