Chapter 97: Volume 1, Chapter 97: Behind Closed Doors
The pitch at the main complex was silent save for the hum of sprinkler heads retracting into the turf. There were no fans in the small metal stands, no broadcast trucks idling behind the perimeter fencing, and no public address system echoing names across the valley. A few performance analysts sat in the shade with laptops resting on their knees, while two medical trainers monitored GPS vests from folding chairs near the tunnel.
Rayan sat on the bench in an unnumbered training top, his shins taped over white socks. On the pitch, the match against SC Farense was forty minutes deep.
"Victor’s capped at eighty-five," an assistant analyst whispered to Falcão behind the bench. "Earlier if his high-speed load spikes."
Falcão checked the live figures on his tablet. "Flag it before he reaches the limit."
Rui Amorim didn’t look back at the conversation. He stood at the edge of the technical area, his eyes fixed on the central midfield balance. Sporting was locked at 1–1, circulating the ball with patient, functional rhythm without finding a breakthrough against Farense’s low block.
At the sixty-third minute, Amorim turned toward the bench.
"Rayan. On."
Rayan stripped off his bib and stepped to the touchline. Amorim caught his arm as the fourth official raised the board, giving his instructions in three brief, clipped points.
"Receive while moving. Release before the second defender closes. Close the return lane when pressing. Go."
Rayan crossed the line in the sixty-fifth minute, replacing the left winger.
His first three minutes were a harsh reminder of adult football. On his first touch, Rayan gathered a pass with his back to the touchline, standing upright as he tried to scan. Farense’s veteran right-back arrived shoulder-to-shoulder as the ball reached him. Rayan’s upright stance gave him no base. The defender leaned through the contact, shifted him off balance and poked the ball away cleanly.
Two minutes later, Rayan saw a central lane open for Pedro Gonsalves. Instead of releasing the ball instantly, he took a second touch to set his feet. By the time his boot struck the ball, the lane had closed, and the pass ricocheted off a defending midfielder.
On the next phase, Rayan charged blindly at the right-back to press.
"Close the pass back!" Coatez shouted from behind him.
Rayan had run straight, leaving the return line to the centre-back wide open. Farense played around him with effortless ease, forcing the cover midfielder to sprint thirty metres to break up the attack.
Rayan wiped sweat from his eye, forcing his breathing into rhythm. ’No panic. No wild gestures. Reset.’
In the seventy-third minute, the sequence clicked.
Coatez played a sharp diagonal pass out to the left flank. As the ball arrived, Rayan used First-Touch Escape, allowing the pass to travel across his body while he moved beyond the first pressure. He escaped the initial defender’s angle and released a crisp, early pass into the feet of Pedro Gonsalves in the half-space.
Rayan didn’t watch the pass. He accelerated down the channel, attacking the return lane. Gonsalves took one touch, disguised his intent, and threaded a return ball perfectly into Rayan’s path as he approached the edge of the penalty box.
The Farense right-back closed in, planting his feet to block the inside cut.
Rayan dropped his left shoulder in a tight Body Feint. The defender adjusted his hips to cover the fake. In that microsecond, Rayan linked the Body Feint directly into Explosive Exit, beginning his first stride without resetting his stance.
He didn’t blow past the defender, but he bought half a yard of clean separation.
A covering centre-back surged over to block the path. Driven by the closing angle, Rayan struck a hard, low cross across the face of the goal, sliding it into the corridor between the defensive line and the keeper.
Victor Gyoker attacked the gap between the two centre-backs, sliding in to smash the ball into the roof of the net from four yards out.
Sporting 2–1.
Gyoker got to his feet, slapped the grass off his shorts, and gave Rayan a short nod as they jogged back toward the centre circle. "Early again," Gyoker said, his voice flat and professional. "Put it there every time."
Farense adjusted immediately. The right-back refused to bite on Rayan’s next approach, dropping off three yards and protecting the inside channel with central support.
Rayan adjusted with him. When Gonsalves returned the ball near the touchline, Rayan shaped as though he would cut inside again, then pushed the ball outside and drove past the defender’s front foot. He reached the byline before the covering midfielder arrived and pulled the ball back towards Gonsalves, whose first-time effort forced a low save.
Two minutes later, Rayan received with the full-back refusing to commit. Instead of dribbling, he clipped an early cross behind the centre-backs. Gyoker reached it under pressure but directed his header narrowly wide. The defender had removed the inside route, but he had not removed every choice.
Sporting continued to circulate possession away from Rayan’s side. Gyoker pinned the near centre-back, occupying both central defenders.
As the second phase recycled through Gonsalves, Rayan noticed the far full-back glance toward the ball, turning his shoulders away from the back post.
The moment the full-back lost visual contact, Rayan cut behind him into the unguarded space. Gonsalves clipped a precise, floated cross over the defensive line. Rayan arrived at the far post, adjusted his feet in stride, and guided a clean, low first-time volley across the goalkeeper into the bottom right corner.
Sporting 3–1.
He jogged back to shape with a quiet fist pump, spending the final five minutes completing simple defensive tracking duties until the referee blew the final whistle.
In the quiet changing room after the match, Amorim stood by the door as the players peeled off their boots.
"Good finish, Rayan," Amorim said, his voice measured. "But you got knocked off the ball because you received upright, you delayed the pass to Pedro early on, and you left the return lane wide open on your first press. Fix those."
Falcão glanced up from his laptop near the tactical board. "The exit phase against their right-back worked," he noted casually. "The transition from the feint to the first stride was clean."
Once the staff exited and the room quieted down, the familiar smoked-black interface expanded across Rayan’s sightline.

The thumbnail featured Duarte in the tunnel, wearing the official senior kit under the floodlights, surrounded by news cameras and cheering fans.
Rayan had posted a goal and an assist on a silent pitch behind closed doors. Duarte was walking out to perform for thousands.
Rayan locked his phone, pulled his kit bag over his shoulder, and walked out into the afternoon sun.
