Chapter 89: Volume 1, Chapter 89: The First Friendly

Thursday afternoon brought warm, still weather to Sporting’s academy for the U17s’ opening preseason friendly against Académica. There was little stadium atmosphere, with only relatives, academy staff and a few observers gathered beyond the touchline.

Rayan sat on the bench wearing his warm-up bib alongside Bernardo Rocha, watching as the starting eleven took their positions. Martim Azevedo took his place in goal. Across the back line, Bruno Sequeira started at right-back with Henrique Duarte and Vasco Mendonça at centre-back, while Leandro Freitas played at left-back. Midfield featured Salvador Almeida sitting deep, supported by Namir Haddad and Rodrigo Figueiredo. Up front, Leandro Viana started on the left wing, Gonçalo Matos led the line through the middle, and Duarte Faria started on the right wing.

As Duarte passed the bench on his way towards the right flank, his eyes dropped briefly to Rayan’s warm-up bib.

"Watch the first touch," Duarte said. "That’s why I’m out there."

He continued onto the pitch without waiting for a response. Rayan kept his eyes on Duarte rather than answering. The comment was meant to embarrass him, but it also gave him something specific to judge.

Opposing them was a compact, well-drilled Académica side arranged in an organised 4-3-3 shape. Diogo Simões took position in goal, protected by a defensive line of right-back Tiago Amado, centre-backs Martim Seabra and Lucas Figueiredo, and left-back Francisco Lemos. In midfield, defensive midfielder André Loureiro anchored the space ahead of the back line, flanked by central midfielder Henrique Brito and attacking midfielder Gonçalo Pina. Up front, Simão Matias occupied the right wing, Artur Cabral stretched play on the left, and Samuel Costa started as the central striker.

Académica coach Ricardo Coimbra stood near the edge of his technical area, repeatedly reminding his midfield not to chase Sporting’s centre-backs. His side remained narrow whenever the ball moved centrally, trusting Tiago and Francisco Lemos to delay the wingers rather than diving into isolated tackles.

The opening minutes showed the difference between an internal exercise and an opponent with no interest in helping Sporting develop. Académica did not press simply because the ball entered their half. Samuel screened the return pass into Salvador, Gonçalo Pina stayed close enough to Rodrigo to prevent an easy turn, and André shifted behind them to close whichever central lane appeared next.

Sporting’s first promising attack came through Duarte. He dropped short, received on his back foot and released Bruno down the outside before Lemos could close him. Duarte immediately continued inside, but Martim Seabra stepped across and cleared Bruno’s return delivery before Gonçalo could attack it.

Duarte jogged back into position without showing frustration. Even when the move failed, his first touch had changed the angle and forced Académica’s line to retreat. Rayan understood the point behind the earlier insult. Duarte did not wait for space to appear after receiving. His touch created it.

Bernardo sat forward beside Rayan, watching Académica’s midfield slide across again.

"They’re giving us the outside pass," Bernardo said.

Rayan nodded. "Then closing it before the winger can turn."

Neither of them sounded bitter about starting on the bench. They were studying the same openings because either could be asked to enter them later.

Académica’s structure continued to create genuine friction for Sporting’s build-up play. André Loureiro positioned himself smartly to block the central passing lanes into Namir, forcing Sporting’s back line to circulate possession laterally.

On the left flank, Leandro Viana struggled to establish a clean entry against Tiago Amado. Tiago was patient, refusing to dive into early tackles or buy body feints. Instead, he maintained his defensive distance, waiting for Viana to take his first touch before stepping forward to establish physical contact and force the pass backwards.

In the eighteenth minute, Académica turned their defensive discipline into an opening goal. Capturing a loose ball in midfield, Gonçalo Pina released Simão Matias into space down the right channel. Simão slowed near the edge of the area, drew Vasco towards him and slipped a weighted pass across the inside-right channel. Samuel Costa peeled away from Henrique Duarte and met it first time, guiding a low finish beyond Martim Azevedo.

Académica led 1–0.

The Sporting bench reacted with a brief burst of frustration before settling again. Ricardo Bastos called for the defensive line to recover its spacing, while Marques remained near the technical area with his arms folded. No substitution was prepared. The starters were expected to solve the problem.

Académica became even more compact after scoring. André dropped closer to the centre-backs, narrowing the space Rodrigo had used between the lines. On Sporting’s left, Leandro Viana received two passes with Tiago already balanced in front of him. The first time, Leandro tried to shift the ball inside and was forced backwards. The second time, he combined with Leandro Freitas, but Tiago passed the runner on and recovered his position before the return ball arrived.

Duarte presented a different problem on the opposite side. He moved before the pass, sometimes holding the touchline and sometimes arriving inside Lemos’s shoulder. One early cross was blocked, and another attack ended when Lucas Figueiredo stepped across him, but Duarte continued demanding possession.

The jealousy from Wednesday returned as Rayan watched. Duarte was not producing a perfect half, yet every reception seemed to begin with a clearer picture. He understood when to attack Lemos, when to release Bruno and when to move inside without the ball. Even his failed actions forced Académica to adjust.

Rayan shifted his attention back towards Tiago. Jealousy could wait. If Marques called him, he would be entering against the defender who had given Leandro almost nothing from a standing start.

The goal forced Sporting to settle their collective tempo. Henrique Duarte and Salvador Almeida took control of the build-up phase, circulating the ball with greater patience and forcing Académica’s block to shift side-to-side.

Twelve minutes before half-time, Sporting found their response. Salvador bypassed Académica’s initial line with a crisp pass into Rodrigo Figueiredo, who turned smoothly between the lines. Scanning the defensive unit, Rodrigo spotted Duarte Faria making a sharp, angled run in behind Francisco Lemos.

Rodrigo threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the space. Duarte took it in his stride with an immaculate first touch that carried him beyond Lemos without breaking his momentum. Entering the penalty area, he stayed balanced under the recovering pressure and drove a powerful finish high into the far corner.

It was the standout individual action of the half, bringing the score to Sporting U17 1–1 Académica U17.

Watching intently from the bench, Rayan focused his entire attention on Tiago Amado’s movements. He noted how Tiago consistently delayed his challenge, remaining patient until a winger committed to a first touch. Attacking Tiago from a standing start on the touchline was unlikely to work; the defender’s spatial positioning was too secure. However, Rayan noticed that when Tiago stepped out to press a winger laying off a return pass, a pocket of space opened directly behind him before André Loureiro could slide over to cover. A dynamic combination play, rather than a direct dribble, offered a far cleaner entry route.

As the referee blew the whistle for half-time with the score tied at 1–1, the starters walked towards the bench to hydrate.

Nuno Marques stepped over to the substitutes’ bench and glanced down at Rayan.

"Rayan," Marques said, gesturing towards the pitch. "What are you seeing from their right side?"

"Tiago waits for the first touch," Rayan said. "André blocks the inside, but when Tiago steps onto a return pass, the space opens behind him. We need to move him with a one-two."

Marques nodded once. "Good. Get the tracksuit top off and start warming up. You’ll be on soon."

Rayan removed the tracksuit top and jogged towards the touchline.

Rayan began his first acceleration as the starters drank behind him. For forty-five minutes, he had studied the problem from the bench. Soon, he would have to solve it at full speed.
