Chapter 2305
Chapter 2305: Chapter 2305
Luckily, in the dark, all Little Potato could see were those glowing green eyes; he couldn’t see his gloomy face, otherwise he would’ve cried even harder.
Ruan Jiaojiao fumbled around coaxing him for quite a while, even turned on the bedside lamp. One hand rubbed down Little Potato’s back, the other pointed at Duan Xi as she explained, "Little Potato, don’t be scared, don’t be scared, he’s not a stranger, this is Brother Xi. Look, someone you know, right?"
Who knew that one little point would ruin everything—Little Potato, who’d just barely been soothed, instantly burst into loud wails again, even harder than before.
She couldn’t calm him down, and Ruan Jiaojiao’s head was pounding.
What was strange, though, was that even with Little Potato crying like this, Gu Zichen and Shu Lang, who were sleeping on the same second floor, didn’t come over to check.
Ruan Jiaojiao had no choice but to keep coaxing him, kissing and hugging, and finally managed to barely settle him down.
But he burrowed his little head into her arms and, from beginning to end, didn’t dare look at Duan Xi. His tiny hands clung tightly around Ruan Jiaojiao’s neck, looking like he was terrified she’d abandon him.
Feeling this little one rely on her so much, Ruan Jiaojiao’s heart just melted.
Duan Xi, on the other hand, stared at Little Potato’s back as if he were about to bore a hole right through it. Based on past experience, he knew exactly how to win Ruan Jiaojiao’s attention.
He just stood quietly by the window like that, the cold night wind whooshing in from outside. He was only wearing a light jacket, and his figure looked seriously bleak.
Ruan Jiaojiao glanced over unintentionally and, sure enough, felt a stab of pity.
On such a freezing night he’d come looking for her, even climbed up to the second floor; it must’ve been hard. She lowered her voice and said to Duan Xi, "Brother Xi, aren’t you cold? How about you go to sleep first? I’ll keep coaxing him."
"Send him back." Duan Xi.
"That’s not really good, is it? It’s so late, Auntie and Uncle must already be asleep." Ruan Jiaojiao was a bit embarrassed.
"I ran here." Duan Xi.
Ruan Jiaojiao froze, eyes widening as she asked in surprise, "You ran all the way here from that far?"
Duan Xi nodded.
Now she really felt bad, and despite it being the dead of night, she wanted to pick Little Potato up. But Little Potato was chubby and she didn’t have much arm strength. She could lift him, but walking while holding him was just too much, so Duan Xi had to come over and carry him.
Little Potato didn’t want to be sent back, but once Duan Xi lifted him up by the armpits, he didn’t even dare struggle, only looked at Ruan Jiaojiao with a pitiful little gaze.
Ruan Jiaojiao guiltily turned her eyes away, not daring to meet his.
The two of them walked out one after the other. The sconces in the corridor were on, and they headed toward the master bedroom on the other side of the hallway. Ruan Jiaojiao walked in front, and halfway down the corridor, Duan Xi behind her suddenly shifted, his brows knitting together.
Ruan Jiaojiao didn’t understand and beckoned to him, lowering her voice: "Brother Xi, why aren’t you coming?"
"..." Duan Xi.
His hearing was sharp to begin with; in this pitch-dark, utterly quiet night, his ears were even more sensitive. Hearing the faint, all-too-familiar sounds drifting from that room, Duan Xi held Little Potato and refused to take another step.
Ruan Jiaojiao looked at him suspiciously and had just started toward him to tug him along when, the moment she moved, she caught a faint but extremely familiar sound. Her little face instantly flushed red.
This, this, this...
She lowered her head to glance at the watch on her wrist and saw the hands had already crept past one in the morning. She hadn’t expected that even this late at night, her uncle and aunt’s "night life" would still be so...active. She finally understood why her uncle had so eagerly sent Little Potato to her room earlier.
