Chapter 1750: Gathering of Scions
Chapter 1750: Gathering of Scions
Hopeful.
Disbelief.
Excitement.
Those were what Rex felt on his way to this place.
Nothing about Empress Morgana was out of the ordinary, or at least he didn’t see her acting weird.
Just like any other empress, she leads, empathizes, and provides hope to the people.
Leading the charge and facing anything that got in their way head-on gave hope to the people and soldiers, and now, she was accepted as the new empress. Someone like her—respectful, elegant, and strong will certainly fulfil her promise.
That is what Rex thought.
And to an extent, she did fulfil her words.
Both the Phoenix Feather and Maw of Oblivion were right there inside those chests, a few meters away.
If she hadn’t had any intention of upholding her words—then she wouldn’t have gone out of her way to bring those items here. And from that fact, Rex could discern that something had happened to her. Her circumstances changed.
Bringing these chests here was her way to absolve the guilt inside her.
So, she could lie to herself that she had done her part.
Only the circumstances prevented her from doing the last step of their deal.
She couldn’t hand these items to Rex.
But the guilt still lingers.
Rex could see it clearly in her eyes—even though she was trying her hardest to hide it, he could see it.
And that guilt was the reason she gave this warning.
“Leave,” She repeated one last time, as her eyes began to water. “Just leave…”
Even though she said that, desperate to tell Rex that these items weren’t worth it, a part of her already knew Rex wouldn’t turn back. There’s simply no chance. He was not native to this realm, and the only reason he’d crossed was to find these items.
And that reason would simply overpower her warning.
Retreat was simply not an option for him.
But regardless, at least she was going to try her best so that his blood wouldn’t be on her hands.
“Know that if you step past that line, that border, you will be forfeiting your life,” She continued, a tear drizzled down her cheek. “Even your body in the Mortal Realm will cease to exist.”
“Is that your way of scaring me?” Rex raised his eyebrow and pushed Amanir back, telling him to leave, as this meeting is not going to end well. He can already tell. “I apologize in advance, Empress Morgana, but I’m not leaving until I get what I came here for.”
Rex could already feel the thrilling excitement of the moment when he cured Nivellen.
He was anticipating seeing her standing back up again and return to how she once was.
It was already so close.
Even last night, he felt like he had almost grasped it.
Now that the items he needed were only a few meters away, he couldn’t possibly leave empty-handed.
Rex took a step.
And then another.
Each step he took seemingly echoed into the void and halted the world from spinning.
All he could hear was his own heartbeat, his breath, and also the rustling wind.
And the moment he stepped onto the platform, notifications from the System flooded his vision.
<Scanning complete!>
<Notice: the corpse belonged to the Angel Origin, the First Light!>
<Notice: the user has entered the arena for the First Stage of Invincibility!>
<It’s a trial to become a Blank!>
<Trial is starting…>
<Be advised, the user cannot exit the designated area until the trial is completed!>
<Main Quest: First Invincibility has been initiated…>
…
<Main Quest: First Invincibility>
Description: Congratulations, the Highseat of Invincibility has recognized the user as worthy to become an established Scion! It has granted a glance toward the user, and bestowed a trial to pass the First Stage of Invincibility—and become a Blank! Breach through the wall that is placed before the user, using any means necessary to complete this quest!
Rewards: Depends on the user’s performance.
Penalty: The System will shut down.
…
Rex stared at the notifications.
He scanned each one in a second and then sucked in a cold breath.
A trial to become a Blank…? Wasn’t that supposed to be during my battle against the Immortal Slugs?
Before departing and then falling into the trap, Kei Xun already warned him that the trial would come soon enough. In hindsight, he thought it would happen back when he was fighting the Immortal Slugs. It was especially likely since he fell with April.
His Great Filter should be an attack on his loved ones again.
Just like that particular night, he had never forgotten until this very moment.
But no… that wasn’t it.
Had that moment been the Great Filter, then he would’ve gotten these notifications from the System.
But there was none at that moment.
Rex had been so consumed by rage back then to the point of triggering the Super Berserk Quest that he had missed the most obvious fact. In that blind fury, he truly believed his endeavor in the Spirit Realm had reached its end.
All that was left for him to do was take what he needed and return home.
No, he wasn’t nearing the end.
In truth, there’s still one more wall he needs to pass.
Just then, everything around him froze.
A frown crept to Rex’s face.
He didn’t dare to speak, nor breathe too loudly.
Something was different about this moment, and there was this odd, nauseating feeling that welled up in his stomach. It felt like going to battle for the first time, or rather, in the face of something so powerful that he couldn’t hope to compare.
It’s not the Demon Origin—this is a lot stronger than her. What is this?
Who paused reality around me?
<Notice: the user is now before the Highseat of Invincibility.>
<It’s advised to answer the question correctly as there will be a heavy penalty for giving the wrong answer.>
Rex stared at the notifications with trembling pupils.
“Highseat of Invincibility…?” He muttered, eyes widening in shock as his body stiffened.
Even with his forehead still angled toward the floor, he could feel several crushing auras snap onto him—each one heavy enough to grind bone—layered atop the overwhelming pressure that had slammed into him moments earlier.
And when he finally forced himself to steady his thoughts and lift his gaze, the air fled his lungs.
The Tomb of Heroes was no more.
Gone was the expansive chamber with four massive statues.
It was now replaced by a celestial throne room unlike anything he had ever seen before.
His throne room back home was already lavish enough, but this… this is a million times grander.
Rex didn’t know when, but the surroundings had already changed.
Ahead of him was the throne befitting the ruler of all the worlds; it rose like a monument carved from living crimson crystal. Every facet gleamed with a deep, inner pulse—less like reflected light and more like a heartbeat.
Its hall blazed with layered reds: sanguine, wind-dark, ember-bright, and everything in between.
All swirled together in a regal, almost violent majesty.
Behind the throne, instead of a high headrest, there were only two spires that burned scarlet.
Hollow, incomplete—like this throne was still currently being forged despite already having the grandeur of a seat that belonged to the ruler of all the worlds. Veins of crimson luminance threaded across the vaulted ceiling, weaving together before plunging into a single blazing core overhead.
A sun of blood-light that crowned the throne’s occupant in bloody glory.
And below it was the staircase that stretched wide and imposing, a grand ascent worthy of the strongest.
A royal red carpet spilled down its center in thick, velvety folds—its deep hue almost indistinguishable from the throne’s crystal glow. And flanking that carpet, from channels cut along both sides, streams of blood poured in steady, unbroken lines.
No doubt about it… this was the Highseat of Invincibility.
On that magnificent staircase that stretched at least a thousand steps were beings.
Red silhouetted beings that stood on different levels of the staircase.
Like shadows made of blood and power.
Rex manifested in this breathtaking throne room, but he was at the very bottom.
He wasn’t even at the staircase.
And upon his appearance, these shadows with a unique aura each, glanced over their shoulders.
All of them looked down at Rex.
Some looked at him with passive indifference, some looked at him with clear excitement, and there were even some who looked at him with the kind of killing intent that could flatten a mountain. Rex could tell who they were.
Scions.
Candidates for Invincibility.
All gathered to welcome another one who entered the race.
Near the bottom, he recognized one.
Just her eyes and the quiet certainty in the way she stood were more than enough to recognize her.
Kei Xun.
And upon his arrival, a smile graced her lips.
Each one is strong, no doubt about it. And those three at near the very top… are the strongest here.
Rex looked up at the three silhouettes that were closest to the Highseat of Invincibility; their powers are suppressed by this throne room, but even so, he could still feel it. Each one of them was someone whom he couldn’t compare to at his current state.
One was akin to a cold fire that could burn without notice.
Another was like the storm, a pressure that seized the air before anyone realized they’d already bowed
And the third one was like a breeze, light and unhurried, yet strong enough to topple giants.
Two were giving him an indifferent look, while the other was waving at him with an excited smile.
Even though these three have power beyond his comprehension right now, none of them dared to speak aloud. He was new here, young, weak, but none of them made a move against him. And that was because the Highseat of Invincibility was watching.
At least in its presence, none of them dared make a move.
Splash!
Rex looked up at the glowing red core above the throne as its light bathed the entire place.
And then, it narrowed until it shone onto him only.
Based on the System, he would be given a question, and the answer to that would determine whether he’s going to get the penalty or not. And since this was closely related to becoming invincible, he could already tell the penalty was not something he could bear.
So, he has to give the right answer.
“Scion Rex…”
A voice echoed.
It wasn’t authoritative, nor is it monstrous like Rex had anticipated.
But instead, the voice was ordinary, monotone—it was the voice of a woman.
Everyone watched Rex in taut silence, every gaze sharpened with expectation.
All of them knew the question the Highseat of Invincibility would pose—the single test every contender had to face before stepping into the next stage and becoming a Blank. One question that would determine whether Rex is a decoration or a real contender.
“Invincibility is a throne only for the strong. It’s reserved for one person—who is strong enough to fight anyone. Who fear nobody. Who is the most defiant. And now, Invincibility has one simple question for you…”
“Can you endure more?”
Just as it claimed, it was a simple question.
Can you endure more?
Everything that happened up until this point has been crushing and painful.
But to reach greater heights, the future will be more crushing, more painful.
It simply asked whether Rex could continue.
Had it been a month ago, he would probably have found it hard to answer this question.
Now… He didn’t even need to think.
“I did not become a Werewolf because I want to; it so happens to be my only choice. I do not become an emperor because I want to; it so happens to be my only choice. And I do not become a Scion because I want to… I had no other choice. But nevertheless, I am a Scion now.”
Rex raised his gaze and met the gazes of a hundred head-on.
“I live to protect the people beside me. If invincibility is the price of keeping them safe, then I’ll bear it without hesitation. So yes—I can endure far more.” He lifted a single finger, leveling it at the silhouettes above him. “Let me make this clear… If any of you fuckers dare to aim at me, I’ll put you in the ground.”
“And with your corpses, I’ll climb all the way to the throne. So, unless you wanted to help me, I suggest steering clear of me and what’s mine…”
