Chapter 1722: Patience
Chapter 1722: Patience
Rex dusted his clothes nonchalantly after saying that.
It wasn’t often that he had time to relax like this, so he was rather annoyed that someone was taking his time. He was planning to focus on healing under the makeshift moon above, hoping that it would make a difference, stay in the Banished Realm to accompany Nivellen, or even try contacting the others to see how they were doing.
He had been neglecting them and was worried that they would be angry at him.
Out of the others, he wanted to contact Adhara the most since she recently went berserk.
No more updates from the System about her, so she handled the problem herself, which was good.
But still, Rex was curious as to what had happened.
Considering that it’s Adhara, it’s not that surprising. Her element must’ve run rampant—and made her more emotional during her training or hunting. But still, I need to check. Chaos is invading the Mortal Realm, and I don’t know what that Fourthborn is thinking.
Rex wanted to dismiss that, but he remembered Adhara’s occupation was upgraded.
It went from Female Alpha to Female High Alpha.
Something must’ve happened to her since the System stated that an occupation could only be upgraded when the pack members experienced an intense emotion towards him. So, she must have gone through something big, and Rex wanted to know.
But the killing intent quest ruined that.
Once I’m done with this, I probably only have the time to accompany Nivellen.
Just as he thought of that, he focused on Lucen and raised a brow, finding him unmoving.
“What are you doing?” Rex asked in annoyance. “Quickly behead yourself. Do you need a weapon?”
“P-Please…” Lucen whispered with a shaky voice.
Rex smiled condescendingly when he heard his meek voice, the kind that had no shred of arrogance that he had displayed earlier. “What’s this, Lord Lucen?” He asked with a teasing tone. “Are you going back on your words? Aren’t you a noble from birth? Shouldn’t a noble keep their word?”
Instead of answering, Lucen changed position to kneel on both knees.
He didn’t say anything, letting his posture do the talking.
“I can smell what you’re trying to do by coming here.” Rex grabbed his hair tightly and forced him to look up. “You’re here to kill me and make a name for yourself. And with your sister offending me first, you used her as an excuse to attack me. If I die, people would not blame you too much for doing what you did. After all, you’re protecting your sister.”
“If you set out to kill, then be prepared to be killed. Does nobody teach you that?” He asked whisperingly.
Rex wasn’t planning to let him go.
Not only did he not want to do that, but the killing intent quest also prevented him from doing that.
Unless he got better rewards than the penalty, then he’d have no inclination to fail the quest.
“Lord Rex!” Lady Ravyn’s voice rang out—as she rushed down the staircase, shoving Rex back—with both hands before stepping between them. Her chest heaved—as she faced him, trembling yet resolute. “I beg your forgiveness on my brother’s behalf—he only acted to protect me. Please, spare him just this once!”
Rex stared at Lady Ravyn blankly.
Is she stupid or what? Lucen ignored her, and she still thinks this is about protecting her?
Considering how blatantly Lucen was acting, he couldn’t believe that Lady Ravyn, who seemed to be a proper noble, would be this dense. She should’ve realized already that Lucen was only using her as an excuse, nothing more than that.
Before Rex answered, he turned to the side.
His ears picked up the sound of heavy footsteps approaching the backyard.
Hmm, the guards are already here. I need to kill him right now, or I won’t have a chance.
Just as Rex was about to do that, his eyes narrowed.
Since Lucen came to kill him, Rex let his status window stay visible to monitor his status section.
And now, the status section stated that Lucen was extremely murderous.
Despite his face now bearing signs of fear and helplessness, inside, he was still aiming to kill Rex.
Some actor he is… Does he still have a trick up his sleeve?
Rex turned to look at Lady Ravyn and then back to Lucen, before he realized that this situation right now was extremely humiliating for Lucen. He was the big brother, and he was now hiding behind Lady Ravyn, which was humiliating for him.
Earlier, Lucen was also provoking Rex using something about hiding behind Princess Davina.
Who would’ve thought that it was a projection of his own soft spot?
Killing him right now would only make me look like—the bad guy, even though I’m the one attacked. I guess I could wait a bit longer to kill him. After all, he knew that I wasn’t going to stay long here, so his only window to attack me was tonight.
“I guess I’d give Lady Ravyn some face,” Rex retracted his killing intent.
Hearing this, Lady Ravyn bowed lower than polite, “Thank you for being merciful, Lord Rex.”
“You should thank her, Lord Lucen,” Rex said, staring at him with a condescending smirk. “I’ve a soft spot for women, so you’re alive because of Lady Ravyn. Barging in here and flaunting to protect your own sister, only to end up failing… Some big brother you are.”
Rex turned away as the guards appeared from inside the residence.
All of them looked around before their eyes fixed on the pavilion’s direction.
“Leave while I’m still being merciful,” Rex instructed.
Despite the anger boiling inside like lava, Lucen swallowed his pride and bowed.
“I’ll never forget this, Lord Rex,” He said with restraint and left.
Lady Ravyn thought that he was referring to the mercy he was given, but Rex knew that it wasn’t.
Instead, Lucen was referring to the humiliation he suffered.
Concerned for Lucen, Lady Ravyn wanted to chase him and check on him, but she couldn’t even make it to her third step. She halted abruptly when a baritone voice cut through the air, one that automatically caused her to shiver.
“Did I tell you to leave?” Rex said, glancing over his shoulder sharply.
Moments later.
Rex made Lady Ravyn explain to the guards what had happened in the backyard—for the pavilion to be trashed, and how the nobles wearing assassins’ clothes suddenly spawned out of nowhere. It was a humiliating moment, but under Rex’s gaze, she had no other choice but to do it.
Naturally, the guards who heard the situation were taken aback.
All of them immediately wanted to report these noblewomen to Count Dara.
An assassination attempt on an esteemed guest cannot be tolerated.
Especially when the guest was tied to the owner of the land that the House of Dara was occupying.
If Count Dara heard about this, all of them would be finished.
Even Lady Ravyn, who was the blood-daughter of Count Dara, would probably be exiled or worse.
Offending the House of Castillon is too much for the county, and Count Dara would undoubtedly cut ties with everyone who was involved if he needed to, even if that person was his own daughter. And Lady Ravyn understood that as clearly as possible.
But then again, she did promise Rex that she’s going to take responsibility.
“Keep this a secret from Count Dara,” Rex suddenly said from behind.
“What…?” The leading guard looked at him in shock. “But lord… What they did is inexcusable!”
“Nobody got hurt in the end, so it’s fine. From the start, none of them has a chance to harm me anyway,” Rex approached and held the guard’s shoulder. “I don’t want this accident to reach Count Dara, do you understand?”
“Lord Rex is too magnanimous, but this lowly guard will not argue. If that’s what you want, then so be it,” the leading guard turned to his men. “All of you better forget about what happened tonight! Anyone who couldn’t, I will cut your tongue myself!”
Just like that, Rex waved his hands to see the guards off.
Isabella and the other noblewomen, who dared not leave without his permission, also thanked Rex for doing them a favor and excused themselves. Now, in the backyard, there was only Rex and Lady Ravyn, who seemed to be confused.
“What’s your reason for helping us, Lord Rex?” Lady Ravyn asked, suspicious.
“Of course, I want something in return,” Rex glanced over his shoulder and smirked. “Tomorrow, you’re going to help me with something.”
“How can I help?”
“You’ll know when the time comes.”
Rex headed back inside, intending to find a spot to relax and heal.
On the other hand, Lady Ravyn remained standing awkwardly, not knowing what to do.
She wanted to leave earlier, but Rex kept him behind to explain the situation to the guards.
Now should be the right time for her to leave, but Rex didn’t say a single word, and from the looks of it, he wanted her to follow him inside. ’He’s so strong that it’s making me nervous… I should speak up and ask, but my voice isn’t listening to me.’
“What are you doing?”
“Yes?”
“Follow me inside, you’re not leaving tonight.”
“What…?”
Even though Lady Ravyn has a million questions in her mind, she quickly pulled her dress—so that she won’t trip and chased after Rex. She didn’t know what Rex was thinking, but it’s best for her to follow his instructions for now.
Inside, Rex went to the right wing of the residence where the massive living room was located.
It has everything inside, from a fireplace, a formation of white and gold sofas, a place to enjoy the night sky by the tall and big windows, a spectacular chandelier hanging from the ceiling, and a big painting of a swirling energy that made the inside cool and comfortable.
Rex stepped against the soft carpet and went straight towards the sofa.
He could feel Lady Ravyn was nervously following him, and he found that quite funny.
Earlier, his first impression of Lady Ravyn was that she was composed and dignified, a noblewoman who carried herself with undeterred grace and might, as she also seemed to be one who was familiar with the battlefield.
But now, it seemed there was one situation where even she couldn’t maintain that calm façade.
This situation.
Lady Ravyn entered the room hesitantly and looked around as if she were hoping to see someone else.
Nobody was inside aside from them and the choking silence.
Rex shook his head a little as her mind must’ve been reeling right now.
It’s not what you think, Lady Ravyn. I can’t have her be near Lucen tonight. I want him to be alone with his anger and attack me again.
And I can tell that he will soon enough.
“Make yourself at home,” Rex said as he sat on the sofa and spread his arms to the side.
His sofa was directly in line with the big window, so the moonlight reached him directly.
Rex opened his eyes again and realized Lady Ravyn was nowhere to be seen, and as he turned to look behind, he saw her sitting on the corner as far away from him as possible. “What are you sitting that far away? You’re not a prisoner, so sit here.”
Reluctantly, Lady Ravyn sat on the sofa across from Rex.
She was shifting in her seat, clearly uncomfortable.
A man and a woman inside the same room alone is not a good idea, especially considering that the man has a fiancée, and that fiancée could destroy the woman’s life with a single word. “W-When will Princess Davina return?”
“I don’t know,” Rex said truthfully and shrugged. “She might not come back tonight.”
“R-Right…” Lady Ravyn’s shoulders slumped. ’Why did he bring me here? Can I go home, please?’
“Your task is to look out for any intruder,” Rex said as he clasped his hands above his belly and closed his eyes to focus on regenerating. “Though I doubt I would need it, just in case, wake me up when you sense something.”
“Nobody dares to disturb you here, Lord Rex.”
“You and your friends disturbed me.”
“Ah, th-that’s different.”
“Just do as I told. Unless I missed my guess, your precious brother is going to come attack me again.”
