Chapter 1684: A Feral Savior (1)
Chapter 1684: A Feral Savior (1)
No Spirit Genesis worked within the Desolate Zone.
No equipment that utilizes life energy could be used either.
Lingering in the air was an energy unlike the soothing purity of life energy or the oppressive depth of voidal energy. It carried a nature suspended between these two energies—a distinct essence that exists within the Spirit Realm.
Every time either life or voidal energy was used, this energy reacted viciously.
It mixed with the two energies and dispersed them from the inside.
Due to its parasitic nature that does not involve overpowering the two energies, but merging with them instead, it doesn’t matter how strong or dense they were. This energy clung to them all the same. Be it a Spirit Genesis from a Divine Spirit or a High Spirit made no difference.
And thus, it doesn’t matter how strong the spirits or voidal monsters caught within the zone were.
Before this energy, they were all the same.
“But I’m different,” Rex muttered, taking in everything his senses can pick up in an instant.
His strongest suit had always been his physical strength, be it in this realm or back in the Mortal Realm.
In a matter of seconds, he pinpointed all thirteen nobles within this dome of desolation. Some thrashed helplessly, their limbs bound by black goo that drained them of energy as well as pulling them towards the fissure at the center, while others managed to shield themselves, yet remained hopelessly trapped in place.
Just as he figured out, the ones who managed to protect themselves were those with Law powers.
Empress Morgana, the marquesses, and Princess Davina were the ones who had that power.
And the four of them have around four minutes of time before the Immortal Slugs drain their energies.
I should save those four for the last.
Rumble!
Rex blinked and focused back ahead again as the black pillars burst forth from the cloud of some—and went straight for him. He immediately flared his black-steel claws and sprinted to the side, heading to the closest noble he could reach that was going below two minutes.
Sparks bloomed around each time his claws made contact with the black pillars.
Focusing on the task at hand, he opted to parry and roll to dodge the incoming black pillars rather than confronting them head-on. Even though the attacks came with a speed faster than the normal eyes could perceive, Rex’s raw reflexes were even faster.
Clang!
Clang!
Bam!
In quick succession, Rex parried two black pillars but was forced to block the third one.
He managed to cross his arms in time to block, but was surprised to feel the force behind the attack.
Swoosh!
Rex moved out of the way and made quick backsteps to breathe for a moment.
It hits so damn hard. I think the bones in my arms cracked.
Looking down at his arms, he frowned as he felt a painful sting coming from his bones—but the pain quickly faded as his regeneration patched his bones to normal in an instant. He raised his gaze and saw that the black pillars were pulling away from him.
“Tch!” Rex clicked his tongue. “These things want to keep me away from the nobles.”
Feeling that it might be easier to use the Perfect Beast Spirit Genesis to boost his strength even more, he quickly activated it. But as the exoskeleton was about to form, it dissipated—into nothing, “Right, I forgot I can’t use Spirit Genesis here.”
Catching the roars of many, Rex glanced to the other side and found the soldiers were finally in.
Like they were told, they formed groups of five and immediately charged at the nearest nobles.
One of the nobles noticed their arrival, his eyes widening in surprise.
It wasn’t the soldiers’ willingness to throw their lives away to save him that startled him, but it was due to the sheer fact that their speed hadn’t diminished inside the dome. Even without channeling their own life energy to enhance their physicality, they still moved with astonishing swiftness.
“Put on a big smile, Sir! Your savior has arrived!”
“Get out of my way, this one is mine!!”
“Not in my watch, slowpoke! This, Sir, over here is going to be saved by me!”
Despite the extreme danger of the situation, these soldiers raced against each other to reach the noble first. Even as a black pillar sprouted before them and descended towards them in branches, the soldiers still had a smile on their faces.
Instead of going away, the soldiers confronted the black pillars head-on.
Each one hacked their weapons and confronted them head-on.
But as this group did that, another group blasted past them—leaving them in the dust.
“So long, suckers! Keep those things at bay for us!”
“Fuck, they’re working together as a group?! Did they make a deal to split the rewards among them?!”
From the other side, Rex dodged an attack and landed on his feet.
“It’s getting easier to dodge these black pillars?” He muttered in surprise, but realized that the Immortal Slugs were also dealing with the pouring soldiers. Seems like it could get distracted. Not to mention—the rewards from the System that the soldiers benefited from were also a great help.
Even under the suppression of the Desolate Zone, their speed was incredible.
Rex smirked and immediately blasted forward, “Bringing them here is the right choice!”
Like a bullet, he slipped past the black pillars and managed to reach the first noble.
Rex reached this noble right on time as the timer dropped below one minute.
“Hrggh!”
Since time was of the essence, with ruthless force, Rex cleaved at the black goo pillars binding both the noble’s wrist and leg with his claws. With his monstrous strength capable of rending a mountain peak, he expected them to buckle instantly.
But he was in for a surprise.
Clang!
“Hmm?!” Rex raised a brow, surprised to see that his claws weren’t strong enough to pierce through.
More than that, he was even hurt from attempting to sever them.
“It can’t be cut by ordinary means—you can’t brute force it. Only the power of Law can sever it.”
“In that case…”
Rex raised his claws overhead and tapped into his suppressed Red Dawn of Kaiser, summoning the Law of Inevitability. His claws glistened with profound power, causing the noble to look at them in surprise, as he wasn’t expecting a Knight to have this kind of strength.
Not to mention, he never would’ve thought Princess Davina’s fiancé was a Demon Spirit.
Without wasting a second, Rex tried for the second time.
But unlike earlier, his claws pierced through the black goo pillars.
<Save the nobles: 1 / 12>
Upon seeing this, Rex smiled and nodded, as saving the nobles shouldn’t be that easy.
However, he soon realized that it was too positive thinking.
Sweeping his gaze to the other nobles nearer to the fissure, he noticed that the black goo pillars holding them in place were thicker and stronger. Compared to the ones he severed, those pillars were at least two to three times in size.
<Save the nobles: 2 / 12>
“Hmm?” Rex turned to the other side and saw that the soldiers had managed to rescue one noble.
Despite needing more than a hundred of them, one noble was rescued.
It was good news, but now, the other nobles were nearer to the fissure, so rescuing them is harder.
“Get up and help me rescue the others,” Rex said, preparing to dash to the next one.
But the noble behind him shook his head, “I can’t—the Immortal Slugs’ energy is inside my Spiritual Vein, and I need time—to expel them. At least ten minutes. I won’t be any use to help you, and I am sure the others would be the same.
Hearing this, Rex glanced at him in surprise before clicking his tongue.
I was hoping the rescued nobles were going to help.
Rumble!
Rex sensed an incoming from below as the ground shook underneath him.
Instinctively, he grabbed the noble by his chestplate and threw him out of the dome.
At the same time, a black pillar burst from the ground and stabbed Rex in the stomach.
“Guarghk!!”
Rex was pushed skyward as the black goo pillar spread inside his stomach, damaging his internal organs and messing up his Spiritual Vein. Gritting his teeth, he channeled the Law of Inevitability again before breaking the black pillar.
He dropped from the sky, but his eyes were fixated on the remaining black goo still inside his stomach.
Boom!
Upon crashing on the ground, Rex coughed a mouthful of blood.
Not because of the fall, as that height was nothing for him, but because of this black goo that seemed to have a mind of its own, rampaging inside him. Using the Law of Inevitability again, he used his claws to gauge the black goo out.
It was painful—his nerve endings were screaming at him as he pulled the black goo forcefully.
But he endured the pain, no problem.
Once the black goo was out, he threw it away and slumped on the ground.
“Good thing Kraken is inside me,” Rex muttered as he pushed himself back to his feet. His gaze dropped to his stomach, where Kraken’s presence stirred, dispelling the last traces of the black goo’s energy. “It is the right thing to take care of you. You’re a real help.”
<Warning!>
Rex was startled when a notification appeared.
It warned him of a noble’s timer that was already at ten seconds and counting.
Knowing the quest would fail if even a single noble perished, the warning jolted Rex from his daze. He sprang from the crater, scanning the surroundings until his eyes locked onto a noble in the mid-section, positioned neither too near nor too far from the fissure.
At this point, his lips were already blue, and he was already lying on the ground weakly.
<Timer: 6 seconds.>
Rex immediately dashed without a second thought, but along the way, he saw the black pillars gathering above him in preparation to attack. Even though he could cover the distance between him and this dying noble in under five seconds, it wouldn’t be that easy.
“Shit,” He cursed, eyes bulging with urgency. “I can’t reach him in time!”
Even the other nobles around were desperately calling for this noble’s name, trying to help him stay awake.
Marquess Darius reached out his hand as his eyes glowed brilliant blue.
He used his Law power, giving more energy to the dying noble.
It lowered the timer right above his head, but it also increased the dying noble’s timer by a few seconds.
But it wasn’t enough.
Just then, Rex recalled something.
I need to distract the Immortal Slugs!
Rex’s crimson eyes shimmered, not with mere anger—but with a tide of bloodlust so thick it seemed to bleed into reality. He made an abrupt stop and hugged his own body as the air around grew heavy and stifling, as the pressure of his killing intent condensed into a palpable red aura—that coiled around him like living flame.
It snapped the attention of everyone in the dome as if their instincts screamed danger.
Like the moment a prey noticed a monstrous beast was stalking it.
His black furs bristled, swaying as though stirred by the heat of his own malice.
For an instant, it looked as though his very body might rupture under the sheer force of what he held inside. Then, his muscles bulged and rippled as Rex threw back his head—and unleashed a thunderous howl that reached far and wide.
Aoouuu!
It was a devastating eruption, a sound that made the very air tremble and warp.
His killing intent flowed out like a tidal flood of crimson malice that washed over the entire dome.
And the reaction was instantaneous—the Immortal Slugs shrieked in unison, their black goo pillars retracting from the nobles in frantic haste. Like serpents sensing fire, they recoiled, only to lash out a moment later—hundreds of writhing black tendrils snapped toward Rex.
On the other side, Princess Davina, who was searching for a way out, looked at the commotion.
Her eyes settled on the monstrous furred creature that somehow looked familiar to her.
“Rex…?”
