Chapter 1542 - 1542: Plan B
Mira’s gaze narrowed.
She was hovering above, looking down at the destruction below as the dust hung thick in the air, swirling like a beast’s dying breath. Her pulse was a drumbeat in her throat, responding to the rising tension. Below, through the choking haze, two crimson slits burned—unblinking, feral.
Rex.
His body was painted in crimson, remnants of his suffering from the barrage of debris.
But the fresh wounds knitted themselves shut before Mira’s eyes.
It was an incredible sight, one that sent chills down her spine.
Even though there were Demon Spirits who could regenerate without the use of life energy, this marked the first time Mira had ever seen one again after a long time. And even then, none of the Demon Spirits she saw before could match the speed of Rex’s regeneration.
Due to the pain, Rex’s chest heaved, not with exhaustion, but with something far worse—anger.
A bane factor for all Werewolves.
Once the dust settled, he bared his fangs, savoring the flesh to come.
He didn’t speak. He didn’t need to.
Just the trembling air itself was enough to show what he was about to do.
Unconsciously, Mira’s fingers twitched, gripping the battle fan in her hand tightly than she should.
<Warning: the user’s berserk stat is reaching the 80% threshold!>
“Baring your fangs wouldn’t get you anywhere, you don’t need to do this.”
Noticing the change in Rex’s expression, more deranged than before, the Invincible Apparition quickly appeared and warned him of going overboard, “Remember, this is not the Mortal Realm. It doesn’t have to be a battle to the death. We have a plan, stubbornly stick to it.”
Upon hearing this, Rex tried to shake the anger away.
But it was easier said than done.
It was like holding a thrusting blade by the edge, hurting him more than stopping the blade.
“You don’t have anything to prove to her,” The Invincible Apparition continued. “She’s not a candidate, so your victory against her is basically guaranteed. She’s nothing.”
Slowly but surely, Rex’s heavy breaths returned to normal.
Even his crimson eyes dimmed down—the killing intent they emitted waned with a blink.
Once he recovered, he immediately made a dash.
Swoosh!
Rex immediately sprinted straight at the knights, aiming at them rather than Mira.
Seeing this, Mira immediately reacted, summoning three massive blades of concentrated purple wind and hurled them straight at Rex. Looking up—Rex immediately cast his Spirit Genesis: Perfect Beast, encasing him in the golden exoskeleton.
Instead of dodging, he sprinted faster to increase his momentum before leaping at the blades.
Clang!!
A loud, ear-shattering clang resounded upon impact.
Mira’s eyes widened when all three blades were shattered, only leaving cracks across Rex’s exoskeleton—which were healing rapidly. Rex bit down on his hand and put more blood into his exoskeleton, making it stronger as well as healing it faster.
At his fourth step after the clash, his exoskeleton recovered.
Realizing that Rex was getting uncomfortably close to the knights, Mira swung her fan again.
SWOOSH!
Out of nowhere, a massive windstorm blew Rex’s body hard.
It came from the front, swallowing his charging momentum almost instantly.
His charge gradually slowed, the resistance from the windstorm was strong enough to block his way.
Now, taking a step forward was a struggle.
Capitalizing on that moment, Mira descended and sent a powerful wind crescent down at Rex.
Empowered by a lot more life energy than before, the wind crescent pierced through—the exoskeleton and slashed through his shoulder. Rex bit down on his fangs hard, so hard the blood began to ooze out grotesquely.
Being in pain triggered a rush of adrenaline that sharpened his rage like a blade.
In all the battles he had gone through, this was a good thing, as he became harder to kill that way.
His anger not only increased his strength but also kept his mind focused.
From the moment he entered the Spirit Realm, he never thought he would be holding this instinct back.
Holding his anger is a lot of work.
Not to mention, with the Perfect Beast active, he was prone to getting angry easily.
Focus… Focus! I need to lure her like the plan.
Mira’s eyes flickered when the slash on Rex’s shoulder got through, and the regeneration wasn’t as fast as a minute ago. It was clear that Rex was losing his stamina from all the damage he suffered, and this was the time for her to press further.
Swish!
Like a rush of wind, Mira began to circle Rex and fired more crescent arcs with a wave of her fan.
She kept going, attacking from Rex’s blind spot, wounding him even further.
It was like fighting the wind, he couldn’t keep up.
Despite his insane reflex, which was quite abnormal from how he deflected the debris earlier, there was still a limit. In half a minute, Rex was already bloodied all over. He couldn’t withstand the rush from Mira.
Her speed was a lot faster than his.
Moreover, with the Perfect Beast active, he was also sacrificing his agility.
Before he could fall to her knees, Mira blitzed in and hauled him by the neck, lifting him off the ground.
“Regenerate!” She roared fiercely as she tightened her grip. “The pain you suffered is still not enough!”
No person could retaliate in Rex’s condition right now.
Severe gashes crisscrossed his body like a portrait—his ribcage shattered and jutting beneath torn, blood-coated skin; thigh muscles shredded down to exposed sinew, his face a mangled ruin of fractured bone and torn flesh.
His body trembled under its own weight, regeneration faltering, struggling to hold him together.
But this is to be expected.
Rex ate all of the attacks, he couldn’t block a single one, so this level of damage is natural.
“Do not think this is over yet,” Mire said coldly, watching him as his wounds slowly regenerate. “I will wait for you to recover, and we’ll be doing this again. Every pain you inflicted on these innocent people, I will have you taste it.”
Pssh!
Just then, however, she heard a sizzling sound.
For a second there, she was confused, but soon realized that it came from her.
“Hmmph!”
Mira let out a restrained yelp when she felt a burn on her arm, precisely on her wrist.
Since she was gripping his neck, he was struggling to break free, trying to push her hand away.
As it turns out, breaking free wasn’t the only thing Rex had in mind.
Instinctively, Mira tried to let go, but Rex held onto her hand, stubbornly keeping her within range.
Mira wanted to throw him away, but her eyes caught sight of a scorching mark on her wrist that wasn’t supposed to be there. She never had a mark on her body, so this was clearly Rex’s doing, and the sight of it made her feel incredibly uneasy.
It felt like Rex marked her as his possession, and she didn’t like it.
Confused and slightly troubled, she looked back at Rex and paused when she saw him smiling.
Not a regular smile, but a triumphant smile that stretched from ear to ear.
“What are y-“
Before she could speak, Rex already spat out something—from his mouth, lumped by his blood, which got into Mira’s mouth perfectly. Caught off guard, Mira clutched Rex’s neck again and threw him away hard, sending him bouncing a couple of times.
Once she did that, she immediately spit out the thing that got into her mouth.
An iron tang coated her tongue, triggering a wave of nausea.
She had never tasted this much blood in her entire life.
Once or twice by accident, a drop that had slipped past her lips from a kill.
But this? This is disgusting.
Upon looking at what had gotten into her mouth—that she spits out, she was horrified to realize that it was the tip of a tongue. Biting off the tongue is something incredibly painful, there were a lot of nerves there that could even make a veteran warrior squeal like a little girl.
To do it voluntarily? That took an unbreakable mindset.
One that no regular people could do, even if a blade was pointed at their necks.
However, Rex did it effortlessly without letting out as much as a painful groan—he did it with a smile.
As if biting off his tongue was a delightful act.
At that moment, Mira wanted to teach Rex a lesson—she couldn’t believe Rex was this barbaric.
Swoosh!
Like earlier, Mira sent three wind crescents that sliced through the wind like bullets, spitting in between as she did that. She was holding back from earlier, but this couldn’t be forgiven, “I’m going to break all the bones in your body for daring to do this, you barbarian! Pteuh! Prepare yourself!”
Rex, who was bouncing across the ground earlier, recovered quickly.
He planted his feet and used the golden halo to lessen the wind crescents’ power before deflecting them.
Clang!
All three wind crescents were deflected by his claws perfectly.
“I wouldn’t be threatening me if I were you,” Rex said with his back straight like an arrow, his wounds healing faster than before, even though he was supposed to be running out of stamina by now. “Because I already won this battle.”
“Won?” Mira cackled. “What delusion are you spouting?”
Just as she was about to attack once again, she was surprised to find that her arm had become heavy.
Lifting it became a struggle.
Confused, she tried to raise her other arm, and it ended up exactly the same.
“What… What did you do to me?!” Mira roared and glared ahead, demanding an explanation.
She was holding back against Rex since she could tell that she was stronger still.
She hadn’t even used her Spirit Genesis throughout the fight.
So, this must be some kind of a fluke—no way Rex has the power to do this to her.
“As soon as you knew I’m the one who massacred this… place,” Rex looked around, as if pointing with only his eyes. “You should’ve escaped, find out who I am—and think of a solution. You watched what happened here using that magic trick of yours. Do you think the current me would struggle against the Arcalen House? No, I got stronger.”
Upon hearing this, Mira’s brows narrowed.
Now she knew for sure that somehow, Rex was able to reach the Master Immortal Spirit rank in mere days.
“You underestimated me, so you attacked,” He continued cheekily. “And that’s why you lose.”
From behind, Rex took out a white mushroom that was pulsating like a heart.
“Silent Spores…?” Mira frowned as she instantly recognized what it was.
Even though this one was bigger and throbbing, it was undoubtedly a Silent Spore.
It was a poisonous mushroom that was a product of Selvaris’ Soul Artifact, quite well-known locally.
“Selvaris is dead, this is not possible…” Mira muttered in shock. “Any remaining Silent Spores would disappear upon her death, so this is not possible! Even if Selvaris found a way to preserve it after death, it could only affect those at the Immortal Spirit rank or below. What did you do?!”
“Quite knowledgeable,” Rex praised. “I upgraded it, of course. This is the perfected one.”
Mira was at a loss for words.
None of this was within her expectations—in fact, everything went beyond what she was prepared for.
Not too long ago, Rex obtained the Perfected Silent Spores from the System.
One of the rewards of a quest.
A normal Silent Spore could only affect targets at the Immortal Spirit rank or lower, since Selvaris was only an Immortal Spirit. But the one granted by the System was different. This variant was quite potent enough to affect even those at the Master Immortal Spirit rank.
It wouldn’t be enough to kill Mira, of course, but it could paralyze and weaken her without an issue.
Throughout the battle, Rex had already taken out the Silent Spore and used it.
Since it would secrete invisible gas, Mira wouldn’t know what hit her until it was too late.
As for Rex, he was completely fine.
After all, he has the antidote, and now, he can finish what he wanted to do.
