Chapter 1540 - 1540: Past Replay
Rex got down and immediately went around Dragna Land—putting every item that matched his filters into his inventory. He didn’t care what it was. As long as there was a holographic window above them, he put them away.
Once he was done, he stopped to open a treasure box that had little to no description.
Anything that has some sort of strong protective measure, the scanning feature wouldn’t be able to peer through it until Rex got his hands on them. Like the Forsaken Tower, the mechanism couldn’t be fully deciphered until Rex found its foundation.
So, without a doubt, this treasure box holds something precious.
Summoning the Red Dawn of Kaiser, Rex struck the lock and broke it rather easily.
He scanned the treasure box again and found no hostile protection.
It seemed the protection on the treasure box was meant to hide it, not hurt anyone who opened it.
Rex pulled the lid open and was disappointed when he saw mostly spirit coins inside.
But to be sure, he scanned the inside again and was glad that he did, since there was another item hidden within the pile of spirit coins. Rex reached out his hand inside, rummaging through the coins—until his hand touched something solid.
Grabbing the item, he pulled it out and inspected it.
It was a small piece, at least the length of a finger and two fingers thick.
Sculpted from pale silver and flecked with tiny rubies, this item is hot to the touch—its casing shaped like a coiled serpent biting its tail. On the side, there was a rough surface, a switch, which indicated that this item was more than meets the eye.
“Looks like a lighter,” Rex mumbled inwardly.
Being with Edward for years, he has his fair share of lighters.
Curious, Rex flicked the switch, and a ripple of magic bloomed suddenly above it.
From the mouthpiece, a stream of shimmering blue fire spills—fluid, soft-hissing, and incredibly hot.
As expected, it was a lighter.
But when he scanned the item and saw its description, he realized that it wasn’t a normal lighter.
…
<Speck of Arcalenta Fire>
Description: An item that could summon Arcalenta Fire, which would trigger a mechanism in the Crypt of the Sea.
…
Upon reading this, Rex’s interest was immediately piqued.
“Right… It’ll be weird for a lighter to be hidden inside a treasure box,” He muttered aloud, finding that there was more to the lighter than what meets the eye—unsurprising. “I’m sure the location of all three Echoes was hidden in a complex puzzle, and this lighter might shine some light.”
Surely, the holy grail of the Arcalen House would be well-hidden.
It involves their history, so it would be extremely bad for others to find out about the Echoes.
Perhaps the Arcalen House knew exactly where all three Echoes were, but their current condition made it impossible for them to retrieve the Echoes. So, until they were strong enough, the location—or even the existence of the Echoes would be kept hidden.
Or at least, that’s what Rex was hoping for, so that this wouldn’t be a dead-end.
“Hey, Lady Mira said your time is up.”
Suddenly, a voice rang from behind.
Rex wasn’t surprised, he had already sensed this person approaching half a minute ago.
Pivoting around, Rex casts a polite smile and nods, “Yes, I understand.”
“Did you find anything good?” The man in armor, a knight, asked curiously.
He stole a glance at the treasure box and sparkled at the sight of the spirit coins inside it.
“I found something good enough for me,” Rex nodded before he gestured toward the treasure box. “Go on, take some. I don’t think Lady Mira would mind since she allowed me to take some. I can’t carry all of it myself, anyway.”
“Really?” The knight remarked excitedly. “Don’t mind if I do.”
As he said that, he took a handful of the spirit coins and placed them into his pouch.
Glancing at the other side—where the purple-haired woman, Mira, was still preparing the ritual, Rex considered this a chance and couldn’t help but ask, “Say, what are you guys doing here? What are you preparing?”
“Hmm?” The knight turned to look at the others and realized what Rex was talking about. “Oh, we’re helping Lady Mira with her ritual. I don’t really know what the ritual was for—but I’m sure it’s to find the person who did this to the Arcalen House.”
“If you don’t mind me asking, why would Lady Mira come here personally?” Rex asked again.
Assuming that she was someone important within the Ravencort House, this kind of grunt work doesn’t suit her status. The house should have people for this, and a noblewoman wouldn’t come personally to investigate, unless there’s a reason, of course.
“Princess Davina asked her personally to investigate, that’s why she’s here,” The knight answered.
Upon hearing this, Rex’s eyes widened in surprise.
Destroying a history-rich house would certainly pique the interest of some powerful people.
Even though the Arcalen House was nothing special, or at least that’s what Rex’s impression of them was, he didn’t really know what the house was into. It’s not like he was given a tour as he was apprehended as a prisoner, but he was quite sure they played some parts for the empire.
But for Princess Davina to be involved, that caught him off guard.
Princess Davina? Was the other figure back then her? She’s so far, I can’t really sense her clearly.
Back then, when he was being chased, the System scanned two figures.
One of them was certainly Mira, and now, he realized that the other one was Princess Davina herself.
She must come because of the dying Obelisk of Life.
“I understand why you’re surprised,” The knight continued, as he finished picking up—as many spirit coins as he could. “With the Empress’ recent coronation, the empire is quite sensitive, and most nobles were busy adjusting—to the power change. But Princess Davina didn’t care about that, she cared more about maintaining her territory. That’s just how pure-hearted she is.”
“So, out of respect for the princess, Lady Mira came here personally.” He said with admiration.
Clearly, both Princess Davina and Lady Mira were looked up to by the people.
And that only made Rex even more certain to make Mira a Werewolf.
“I see… No wonder the Arcalen House’s destruction got Lady Mira’s attention,” Rex nodded, gaining lots of valuable insight from the knight. “By the way, how’s the investigation going? Any leads on who was behind it?”
Rex unconsciously held his breath as he waited for the knight to answer.
Since he allowed Eiran to live, there was a chance that he had already confessed about everything.
Even now, Lady Mira might be pretending not to know him.
“It’s been difficult to find any solid clues, not with the Black Rift having swept away most energy traces that would’ve been left behind.” The knight shook his head, recalling how this investigation had been going on for days with little to no result. “All we’ve gathered is that a handful of individuals did this, and their power should be around yours since we found several signs of resistance from the House.”
Upon hearing this, Rex could finally breathe normally.
Seems like Eiran hadn’t told them anything, and he also got lucky since the Obelisk of Life died.
Had it not been for that, Lady Mira would’ve found him already.
“Still, though,” The Invincible Apparition suddenly appeared. “You have to turn her quickly.”
“Yes, yes,” Rex whispered inaudibly. “But remember, my way first.”
Then, he focused on the knight, “Can you accompany me to the lady? I want to thank her again.”
“Of course, come,” The knight nodded and led the way.
Along the way, Rex summoned an item from the inventory that he purchased, a literal bomb.
It would be strong enough to shatter his left arm and knock everyone away—allowing Mira to check on him alone. As long as she didn’t expect anything, there shouldn’t be any problem in catching her by surprise.
Once Rex arrived, he saw that the other knights were standing in a circle.
Mira was at the center, sitting down in a meditative position with her eyes shut.
“Oh, it’s starting,” The knight commented before rushing to his position. “Wait there for a bit.”
Even though Rex wanted to get this over with, he decided to wait.
“What are you doing? Isn’t this your chance? She’s defenseless!” The Invincible Apparition said.
“No,” Rex shook his head. “I can feel it. If I move right now, she’s going to rip me to shreds.”
It wasn’t a lie.
Call it a gut feeling, but Rex instinctively knew that he shouldn’t make a move right now.
Perhaps, since she was doing something, her focus enveloped the area around her so she would be quite ready if Rex made a sudden dash towards her. As he watched from the sidelines, Mira opened her eyes and summoned her Soul Artifact.
Swoosh!
Out of nowhere, a battle fan shaped from layered raven feathers appeared.
Each one was dark and glossy with a natural curve that formed a wide, crescent spread.
Veins of gold dusksteel ran along the spine delicately, anchoring the feathers with embedded beautiful violet gems. A soft, unnatural purple hue radiated from within the feathers, pulsating faintly like bottled moonlight.
But what caught Rex’s attention the most was that the Soul Artifact looked incredibly real.
April taught me about Manifestation—the act of making the Soul Artifact incredibly dense, it appears tangible, no longer shaped by clear life energy alone, but resembling a forged artifact born of Mother Nature itself. After ten grueling years of training, I managed to reach only the first stage of Manifestation called the Skeleton.
Basically, turning the structure of the Soul Artifact more solid.
But Mira’s Soul Artifact… It was almost perfectly real.
Clearly, at a glance, Mira has already reached a higher manifestation than Rex.
Living for a long time and being a noble, Rex wasn’t that surprised by this.
Just then, a faint stream of energy seeped out from each of the knight’s foreheads and went to Mira’s fan.
System, can you analyze what she was doing? Maybe tell me what her Echo was?
Rex fixed his eyes on the insignia that appeared glowing on Mira’s battle fan, which he assumed to be her Echo. Since he was going to turn her into a Werewolf already, he wanted to know her Echo, so that he knew how useful it could be for him.
And also, to know whether what Mira is doing would be a bad thing for him or not.
<Affirmative.>
<Analyzing the life energy pattern…>
Once she was ready, charging her battle fan with immense life energy, Mira made a sweeping motion.
Graceful and precise, creating a breeze of purple hue that expanded throughout the area.
More precisely, toward Dragna Land and Dragna Sea.
Almost instantly, Rex drew in a sharp breath as his eyes bore the sight of a vast expanse—bathed in a purple hue, blanketing the area like twilight mist. Shimmering particles, like tiny sparkling orbs, drifted downward like rain, slowly coalescing into moving shapes—tens, hundreds, soon thousands.
From the way these purple figures were moving, Rex soon realized that they were fighting.
But clearly, there were a handful of figures who dominated.
A writhing creature with tentacle arms, lashing and pulling anything that it could reach.
Another with muscular stature and a dominating fighting style.
One holding a long spear, hacking expertly with their practical fighting skills.
And lastly, a burly figure with two sweeping horns curved back, cleaving through enemies brutally.
For a moment, Rex could do nothing but stare, spellbound by the surreal war unfolding before him.
However, the last burly figure looked familiar.
“Wait… Isn’t that me?” He muttered in shock.
Just then, he realized what Mira was doing, but it was too late to react as the burly figure with horns landed right beside Rex. From the size proportion and also the aura, Rex and this burly figure were eerily almost identical.
Other than the horns, both of them were practically the same person.
Meeting Mira’s questioning gaze, Rex’s heart skipped a beat.
“Shit…”
