Chapter 303: What Joren Knew
The service chamber was too crowded for secrets.
That did not stop people from trying to keep them.
More than thirty people occupied the room now, packed between rusted valve assemblies, a dry stone trough, and the two passages leading east and upward. The wounded had been pushed as far from the entrances as possible. Derren lay against the northern wall. Tovin remained on his litter beside him, still unconscious. Lysa sat between them with one hand wrapped around Tovin’s fingers as though letting go might make him disappear again.
Sera had taken the eastern passage.
Iris watched the upward route.
Darius stood where he could see both.
Milo sat on the floor with his back against one of the old valve housings, conserving what little mana he had regained. His eyes were open now, though barely.
Galahad faced Joren.
Rask stood off to one side with several of his people, arms folded.
Mara did not stand with either man.
That mattered.
Kael remained close enough to hear everything while the System continued quietly reassessing the chamber around them.
[Environmental Reassessment]
Structural integrity: moderate-high
Airflow: acceptable
Geothermal vibration: elevated
No immediate local collapse detected
Regional pressure trend: worsening
They had a little time.
Not much.
Galahad used it.
"You said Lysa was part of a failed exposure group."
Joren’s expression remained flat.
"I said enough."
"No. You said one useful thing accidentally."
Rask looked toward him.
"Answer."
Joren’s eyes shifted.
That was new.
Until now, Rask had mostly opposed Galahad while trying to keep the route under control. But whatever "failed exposure group" meant had put distance between the two men.
Joren looked at him. "This isn’t your work."
"Apparently not."
"Then stay out of it."
Mara laughed once without humor.
"We are standing in a chamber with half the drainage routes failing because people kept telling everyone else to stay out of their work."
Joren ignored her.
Galahad did not.
"What was the exposure?"
Silence.
Darius said nothing.
He did not need to.
Joren looked toward him once anyway.
Then toward Lysa.
Kael noticed that too.
Whatever answer Joren feared giving, it was tied to her.
Galahad followed his gaze.
"Was it done to Lysa?"
Joren exhaled slowly.
"Yes."
Lysa went rigid.
Derren immediately tried to rise.
The healer beside him shoved him back down.
"Stay."
"They did what?"
"Derren."
"What did they do to her?"
Lysa’s grip tightened around Tovin’s hand.
Galahad raised one hand toward Derren without looking away from Joren.
"Let him answer."
Joren’s face hardened.
"It wasn’t supposed to happen to them."
That changed the room.
Mara stepped closer.
"What does that mean?"
Joren ignored her again.
Galahad said, "Then who was it supposed to happen to?"
Joren’s jaw tightened.
No answer.
Kael thought of the altered drake.
The foreign magical residue in its mana flow.
The refined cylinders.
The mana-channel diagrams.
The restraints.
The bodies.
Pieces.
Still only pieces.
Galahad asked another question instead.
"Was this connected to the refined energy in the red-marked containers?"
Joren looked at him.
Too quickly.
There.
Milo, still on the floor, opened his eyes a little wider.
Galahad saw it too.
"So it was."
Joren said, "I didn’t say that."
"You didn’t need to."
Rask stepped away from the wall.
"Those crates?"
Joren turned toward him.
"You know about them."
"I know they are moved."
"Then you know enough."
"No."
Rask’s voice sharpened.
"I know crews move them between stations. I know some are marked for lower storage and some for east transfer. I know people have been fighting over where they go. I do not know what is in them."
Mara looked toward Rask.
"You told me processed core material."
"That is what I was told."
Joren said nothing.
That silence hurt him.
Mara stared.
"You knew that was not the whole truth."
Rask’s expression darkened.
"Apparently."
Galahad stepped closer to Joren.
"Start at the beginning."
"There isn’t time."
The chamber trembled.
Dust fell from one wall.
Milo looked upward.
"Annoyingly, he may have a point."
Galahad did not look away from Joren.
"Then speak faster."
For several seconds, Joren appeared to consider refusing completely.
Then another vibration moved through the floor.
Longer.
Deeper.
The old valve assembly beside Milo gave a metallic groan.
Joren looked toward it.
Then back at Galahad.
"Some of the energy brought through these tunnels is refined from monster cores."
Milo raised one finger.
"That part we guessed."
Joren ignored him.
"Not just refined. Separated."
Kael frowned.
"Separated how?"
"Properties."
That was different.
Galahad narrowed his eyes.
"Explain."
Joren looked irritated by the demand, but continued.
"Different cores carry different mana behavior. Heat. regeneration. aggression. resistance. physical reinforcement. Sometimes other traits."
Kael thought of the altered drake again.
Milo’s earlier conclusion.
Foreign magical energy introduced into its mana flow.
Joren continued. "Most core energy is too unstable to put directly into something living."
Mara stared at him.
"Put into?"
Rask swore quietly.
Lysa looked down at her own hands.
Joren continued before anyone interrupted.
"So the energy is processed. Reduced. Stabilized."
Milo finally pushed himself upright.
"How?"
Joren looked toward him.
"Mana channels."
Milo’s tired expression became serious.
"The diagrams."
Kael looked at him.
Milo nodded once.
"The side room."
Yes.
The diagrams they had already found.
Galahad asked, "And exposure means introducing that processed energy into a living body."
Joren hesitated.
Then nodded.
The room became very quiet.
Derren stared at him.
Lysa did not.
She looked at Tovin.
Galahad’s voice hardened.
"Why?"
Joren answered too quickly.
"Strength."
Simple.
Ugly.
Not enough.
Galahad waited.
Joren’s face tightened.
"People get hurt down here. Drakes are stronger than most fighters. The Caldera kills people who make one mistake. If a person could take even part of what a core carries—"
Mara cut him off.
"That is not an answer."
Joren turned.
"It is exactly the answer."
"No. It is justification."
That shut him up briefly.
Kael watched Mara.
She was angry.
Not shocked by every part.
But angry enough that whatever Joren was describing had not been common knowledge among all the crews.
Galahad asked, "Voluntary?"
Joren said nothing.
There.
Darius’s hand shifted on the pommel of his sword.
Not drawing.
Close.
Galahad repeated, "Were the people exposed voluntarily?"
"Some."
Lysa’s face changed.
Derren’s did too.
Mara whispered, "Some."
Joren looked around the chamber as if everyone else had suddenly become unreasonable.
"The early work needed controlled subjects."
Kael felt his stomach turn.
Galahad’s voice went flat.
"People."
"Yes."
"Not subjects."
Joren said nothing.
Galahad pointed toward Lysa.
"Was she voluntary?"
"No."
Derren exploded.
"You bastard!"
He tried to get off the litter.
Pain stopped him before the healer could.
His face went white.
Lysa turned immediately.
"Derren."
He breathed through clenched teeth.
"They put that in you?"
"I don’t know."
Joren answered.
"Not much."
Everyone looked at him.
Lysa went still.
Kael felt cold rise along his arms.
Not magic.
Anger.
Galahad stepped forward.
"How much?"
Joren looked toward Kael.
"You already found residue."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"You knew what I would find."
"Yes."
That confirmed something else.
Joren knew enough about the process to predict the result.
Galahad asked, "What was done to her?"
Joren’s voice became more clinical.
"Low-dose compatibility exposure."
Lysa closed her eyes.
Mara looked disgusted.
"What does that even mean?"
"Testing whether the body rejects the refined mana."
"And if it does?"
Joren looked toward Tovin.
That was answer enough.
Galahad followed his gaze.
"Tovin."
Joren said nothing.
Lysa’s head snapped toward him.
"No."
Joren remained silent.
Lysa stared.
"No."
Galahad’s voice became dangerous.
"Was Tovin exposed too?"
"Yes."
Derren stopped moving entirely.
Kael looked at Tovin.
The burns.
The shaking.
The unstable condition.
Some of that came from physical injury.
Maybe not all.
The System had not been asked to examine him specifically for foreign residue.
Kael moved toward the litter.
The healer looked up.
"What?"
"I need to check something."
"Do not touch him."
"I won’t."
Kael focused.
The System responded.
[Detailed Living Target Analysis]
Target condition: critical
Physical trauma: severe
Burn injury: significant
Foreign magical residue: detected
Kael’s chest tightened.
"Damn."
Galahad looked toward him.
"What?"
Kael kept reading.
Residue concentration: moderate
Mana-flow irregularity: significant
Compatibility: unresolved
Current destabilization: intermittent
Kael looked at Milo.
"He has more residue than Lysa."
Milo got to his feet despite himself.
"How much more?"
"Enough that his mana flow is unstable."
The older healer looked between them.
"Can that kill him?"
Kael did not know.
He looked toward Joren.
Joren answered instead.
"Yes."
Lysa made a broken sound.
Galahad turned slowly toward him.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"And you left him in a lower camp?"
"I did not."
"Your people did."
"Not my crew."
There it was again.
Fragmented responsibility.
Everyone knew enough to pass the guilt elsewhere.
Galahad looked toward Rask.
Rask shook his head immediately.
"I knew nothing about this."
Mara looked at him.
"You knew Joren controlled lower cells."
Rask turned.
"I knew he controlled containment."
"Containment of what?"
"I was told workers exposed to unstable core material."
Mara stared at him.
"And you never asked why workers were being exposed often enough to need cells?"
Rask’s expression darkened.
"I asked."
"What answer?"
"Accidents."
Milo spoke from near Tovin.
"That word is having a rough day."
Rask looked away.
Galahad returned to Joren.
"Rellan?"
Joren’s face changed slightly.
Kael saw it.
So did Lysa.
"What about him?" Joren asked.
"Was he exposed?"
"No."
Lysa opened her eyes.
Galahad asked, "Why not?"
"He fought too hard."
A strange answer.
Then it made sense.
Joren continued. "They were trying to separate the three. Tovin was taken first. Lysa after. Rellan escaped restraint before they could begin."
Lysa stared.
"Rellan came back."
Joren looked at her.
"Yes."
Her eyes filled again.
"He came back for us."
Joren said nothing.
Galahad’s voice hardened. "And you killed him?"
"No."
Everyone stopped.
Kael watched carefully.
"Then who did?" Galahad asked.
"I don’t know."
That could be a lie.
The System could not solve it.
Galahad studied Joren.
"You were involved."
"Yes."
"In capturing them?"
Joren hesitated.
"Yes."
"Experimenting on them?"
"I supervised part of it."
Mara swore.
Rask looked as if he wanted to hit him.
Galahad continued. "But you did not kill Rellan."
"No."
"Did you see him after he escaped?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Lower transfer route."
Lysa leaned forward despite her injuries.
"What happened?"
Joren looked at her.
"He attacked a transport crew."
"Why?"
"I don’t know."
Galahad said, "He was trying to reach you."
Joren shrugged.
"Maybe."
Lysa’s face twisted.
Galahad ignored Joren’s indifference.
"What happened after the attack?"
"He disappeared into the lower works."
That aligned.
Rellan had been found later beneath a collapsed frame.
Not enough to prove how he died.
Galahad nodded slowly.
"Who ordered the exposures?"
Joren’s face closed immediately.
There.
A harder wall.
"Not relevant."
Mara actually laughed.
"Not relevant?"
Rask stepped closer too.
"Who?"
Joren looked between them.
No answer.
Galahad said, "A man is dead. Another may die. Lysa was imprisoned. Other people have apparently gone through the same process. It is relevant."
Joren remained silent.
The chamber trembled again.
Harder.
One of the rusted valves rattled.
Kael’s System flashed.
[ENVIRONMENTAL ALERT]
Pressure spike detected below service level
Upward geothermal migration increasing
Eastern route stability: degrading
Recommended movement: soon
Timing.
Always timing.
Galahad saw Kael’s expression.
"How soon?"
"I don’t know. Soon enough that we shouldn’t stay here for a long interrogation."
Joren’s mouth moved faintly.
Almost satisfaction.
Darius saw it.
"You think the mountain will save you from answering."
Joren looked toward him.
Darius’s expression remained calm.
"It will only delay it."
No threat needed.
Joren looked away first.
Galahad turned toward Mara.
"Route."
She nodded immediately.
"Upward passage should connect to an old ventilation run."
"Should?"
Milo groaned.
Mara looked toward him.
"I have not personally walked it in six months."
"That is acceptable."
She blinked.
Milo continued, "My standards have collapsed."
Sera called from the eastern entrance.
"Movement!"
Everyone changed instantly.
Galahad turned.
"Direction?"
"East passage."
Rask drew his sword.
"How many?"
Sera listened.
Then looked toward Kael.
The System was already working.
[Directional Scan]
Humanoid signatures: 6
Additional larger heat signatures behind them: 2
Kael’s attention sharpened.
"Six people."
Pause.
"And two larger things behind them."
Mara went pale.
Rask looked toward the eastern route.
"Drakes?"
Kael focused.
Classification confidence: moderate
Probable mature drake-class signatures
"Yes."
The room changed.
Not panic.
Preparation.
Joren immediately moved toward the eastern passage.
Darius blocked him.
"Where?"
"Those people won’t hold."
Rask stared. "Who are they?"
"Lower crew."
"You know?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"I sent them."
Another piece.
Galahad looked at Joren.
"You sent six people after us?"
Joren’s expression tightened.
"To recover Lysa."
Lysa looked away.
Mara whispered, "You idiot."
Joren rounded on her.
"The exposure had to be contained."
"No," Galahad said. "The evidence had to be contained."
Joren looked toward him.
That landed.
Maybe too close.
Before he could answer, a scream came from the eastern passage.
Then steel.
Then a drake roared.
Close.
Far too close.
Sera raised her bow.
"Contact."
Galahad’s attention shifted immediately.
Questions later.
Again.
"Darius, east with me. Sera high line. Iris check the upward passage now. Kael—"
He looked toward Tovin.
Then Lysa.
Then Milo.
"Protect the wounded."
Kael hated it.
He also knew why.
Milo was depleted.
The healers had no combat role.
Derren could not stand.
Tovin was critical.
Lysa could barely move.
Someone had to be the final line.
Kael nodded.
Iris disappeared into the upward passage.
Darius and Galahad moved east.
Rask followed without being asked.
Mara grabbed a short spear from one of the workers.
Joren started after them.
Kael looked at him.
"No."
Joren frowned.
"You are staying."
"You don’t command me."
Kael’s sword came free.
"No. But if you move toward Lysa while Darius is gone, I will assume you are trying to take her."
Joren stared at him.
Kael did not bluff.
Joren saw it.
He stepped back.
Milo looked toward Kael.
"Very princely."
"Quiet."
"I approve."
The first lower-crew fighter stumbled into the chamber.
Blood covered one side of his face.
"Move!"
Galahad caught him.
"What happened?"
"Drakes."
"How many?"
"Two."
The second fighter appeared behind him.
Then another.
Only four of the six made it into the room.
The fifth screamed outside.
Darius vanished around the bend.
Steel rang.
Then a roar slammed through the passage hard enough to shake dust from the ceiling.
Kael’s System flashed.
[Combat Analysis]
Large hostile heat signature entering eastern approach
Second signature behind
Restricted passage geometry favors defenders
Good.
Something.
Kael looked toward Milo.
"Can you close the passage if we need to?"
Milo stared toward the entrance.
"With what?"
"Force."
"Yes."
"How long?"
"Depends what hits it."
"Mature drake."
Milo thought.
"Not long."
"Enough for people to get upward?"
"Maybe."
That might be enough.
Iris returned.
"Upward route is open."
Galahad heard from the eastern passage.
"How far?"
"Two hundred paces to a ventilation split. Air gets cooler."
"Litters?"
"Hard but possible."
There.
A route.
Not safety.
Route.
Galahad shouted back.
"Start moving wounded!"
The chamber exploded into motion.
The healers prepared Tovin first.
Lysa tried to stand.
Kael stopped her.
"You’re carried."
"No."
"Yes."
"I can hop."
"You can fall."
She glared.
Milo said, "He is unfortunately correct."
Lysa looked toward him.
"Who are you?"
"Milo."
"That did not answer anything."
Milo smiled despite everything.
"I like her."
Kael and Mara lifted Lysa between them.
Derren’s litter went behind Tovin.
The walking wounded formed around them.
Iris led upward.
Sera stayed near the eastern entrance long enough to fire.
An arrow snapped into the corridor.
A drake screamed.
Then Darius appeared briefly at the mouth.
"Move!"
That was enough.
Sera turned and ran after the wounded.
Galahad backed into the chamber next.
Rask beside him.
Behind them, the first drake forced its head through the narrow eastern entrance.
Black scales.
Burn marks.
Blood around its mouth.
Not altered.
Not obviously.
Just furious.
Galahad struck its snout.
Rask drove his sword into the softer tissue near the jaw.
The drake recoiled.
Second roar behind it.
Darius stepped into view.
His sword moved once.
Fast.
Precise.
The drake’s next attempt to enter became a spray of blood from a cut beneath its eye.
Not enough to kill.
Enough to hesitate.
Galahad shouted, "Now!"
Darius withdrew.
Milo raised both hands.
Wind moved first.
Not much.
A hard compressed burst threw dust and loose stone into the passage.
Then Force.
Barrier Arc.
Invisible pressure bent across the eastern entrance.
The drake hit it.
Milo’s entire body jerked.
His boots slid.
Kael saw blood immediately run from one nostril.
"Milo!"
"I know!"
The barrier bent.
Did not break.
Yet.
Second impact.
Milo grunted.
"Go!"
Kael looked at Joren.
The man was still in the chamber.
Not moving upward.
"What are you doing?"
Joren looked toward the eastern passage.
Then toward the lower crew.
"Keeping the drakes here."
"With what?"
Joren looked toward the old valve assemblies.
Kael’s stomach tightened.
"What?"
Joren moved.
Fast.
Toward the largest valve.
Mara saw him.
"Don’t!"
Joren grabbed the wheel.
Kael understood before he knew exactly what it did.
Something involving pressure.
The System reacted.
[Mechanical / Environmental Warning]
Valve linked to dormant steam-relief channel
Internal pressure: HIGH
Opening risk: severe
"Joren, stop!"
He turned the wheel.
Nothing happened.
It had rusted shut.
He pulled harder.
Mara dropped Lysa’s side long enough to run toward him.
Kael caught Lysa before she fell.
"Are you insane?"
Joren shouted back, "It will flood the east line with steam!"
"And us!"
"Not if everyone moves!"
Milo’s barrier took another hit.
He cried out.
The invisible arc flickered.
Darius moved between Milo and the passage.
"Go."
Milo stumbled backward.
The barrier vanished.
The drake surged forward.
Darius met it alone.
For one terrible second, the creature’s head and shoulders filled the doorway.
Darius stepped inside its bite.
His sword struck upward.
The drake’s head snapped sideways.
Galahad grabbed Milo and dragged him toward the upward passage.
"Move!"
Kael still had Lysa.
Joren still fought the valve.
Mara reached him.
She hit his hands away.
He shoved her.
Rask grabbed Joren from behind.
"What are you doing?"
"Saving you!"
"You’ll rupture the chamber!"
The valve wheel shifted.
One inch.
The System screamed.
[PRESSURE RELEASE INITIATED]
A deep metallic howl came from inside the wall.
Everyone froze.
Joren’s face changed.
He had not meant to move it that far.
Mara whispered, "Idiot."
Kael looked toward the upward passage.
"Tovin!"
The wounded were not far enough.
The System flashed again.
[STEAM DISCHARGE IN 8–15 SECONDS]
"UP!"
No one questioned him.
Galahad shoved Milo toward Iris.
Sera grabbed Derren’s rear litter strap.
Workers hauled Tovin.
Kael lifted Lysa fully into his arms despite his shoulder screaming.
Mara ran.
Rask ran.
Joren hesitated.
Darius was still holding the eastern entrance.
Kael looked back.
"Darius!"
The commander cut the drake again.
Then retreated.
The drake tried to follow.
The wall behind it screamed.
Steam exploded.
Not a clean jet.
A violent white wall.
It hit the eastern passage first.
The drake vanished inside it.
Its roar became something else.
Kael ran.
Heat chased them up the slope.
The service chamber disappeared behind white vapor.
The upward passage narrowed.
People shouted.
Tovin’s litter nearly struck the wall.
Milo used a tiny Force Plane to straighten it without stopping.
Then stumbled.
Sera caught him.
"No more."
"I agree."
The heat faded gradually.
Not completely.
They kept moving.
Only after the passage bent twice did Galahad finally call:
"Stop."
Everyone stopped because their bodies demanded it.
Kael lowered Lysa carefully.
His arms shook.
The System immediately assessed.
[Physical strain increased]
Right shoulder injury aggravated
Recommendation: discontinue carrying load
Kael dismissed it.
Darius came last.
Alive.
Armor wet with condensation.
A fresh burn marked the edge of his neck.
Galahad looked past him.
"Rask?"
"Here."
"Mara?"
"Here."
"Joren?"
Silence.
Everyone looked back.
No Joren.
Mara’s expression changed.
"He was behind me."
Rask stared down the passage.
"Joren!"
No answer.
The steam continued roaring far behind them.
Galahad looked toward Darius.
"Did you see him?"
"No."
Kael’s System scanned.
[Directional Scan]
Extreme thermal interference behind
Humanoid signature resolution: unavailable
No answer.
Not dead.
Not alive.
Unknown.
Galahad did not go back.
Nobody suggested it.
Not with Tovin barely alive.
Not with steam filling the route.
Not with two mature drakes somewhere behind.
Rask looked furious.
Mara looked something else.
Tired.
Very tired.
She leaned against the wall.
"He knew more."
Galahad looked at her.
"Yes."
"And now maybe he’s gone."
"Maybe."
Mara stared back down the passage.
Then toward Lysa.
Then Tovin.
"No."
Galahad frowned.
Mara straightened.
"He does not get to take the answers with him."
Rask looked at her.
"What are you saying?"
Mara’s expression hardened.
"I’m saying I know where some of the records are kept."
That changed everything again.
Galahad looked toward the upward route.
Then Tovin.
Then the steam behind them.
He did not ask where yet.
Good.
Not now.
Not while they were still trying to survive.
"Remember it," he said.
Mara nodded.
Galahad turned toward Iris.
"Route."
She looked upward.
"Cooler air ahead."
"How far?"
"Unknown."
Milo groaned from the wall.
Everyone looked toward him.
He raised one weak hand.
"I know. I know. I’m retiring the phrase."
Even Mara laughed.
Barely.
Then the ground moved again.
And the expedition continued upward.
