Chapter 954
Chapter 954: 954
From that moment on, Tweet’s journey shifted from a simple voyage of transit into a grueling, solitary training. The key embedded within his core was no longer just a compass, it became his primary text, and the low and medium-tier worlds scattered across the void became his training grounds.
His objective was deceptively simple yet punishingly difficult, he needed to completely erase his ontological footprint. He wanted to master the art of stepping onto a foreign planet so seamlessly that the world’s innate, self-preserving immune system would fail to register his existence, accepting him as part of its native ecosystem rather than a dangerous, anomalous variable.
Yet, years bled away into the cold vacuum of space, yielding little more than frustration. No matter how many shapes he assumed, shrinking down to the scale of a microscopic spore, adopting the biological frequency of native fauna, or cloaking his majestic form in layers of spatial distortion, the result remained stubbornly unchanged. Every time he crossed an atmosphere, the world’s invisible alarms would trip. The ambient energy of the realm would stiffen, and an unmistakable, suffocating wave of localized malice would fixate directly on him, treating him like a splinter lodged deep beneath the planet’s skin.
The most jarring discovery, however, was the realization of what was fighting him. These realms were not like Nana. They possessed no unified, sapient planetary consciousness, no grand maternal or paternal awareness watching over them with intent. Instead, what he was battling was something far more primitive, a mindless, autonomic instinct. It was the universe’s baseline survival reflex, a cold, mechanical rejection of the unknown designed to purge any foreign foreign element before it could take root and alter the fragile equilibrium of a world.
For a long stretch, the journey felt like an exercise in humbling defeat. Tweet carried on through the endless dark, using the empty transit between stars to continuously refine his mastery over the key, though the barrier of planetary instinct still seemed insurmountable.
It was during one of these monotonous, autopilot stretches when his consciousness had withdrawn inward to a meditative flicker just to keep his wits sharp while his body maintained its cruising speed, suddenly everything changed in a single, jaw dropping instant.
Only when a massive anomaly breached his sensory thresholds did his awareness snap back to full, razor-sharp reality.
At first, his brain utterly rejected the input as a sick cosmic joke. The very concept of a world sprouting legs to stride across the cold expanse of the void was physically absurd, defying every law of stellar mechanics he had ever encountered. Yet the impossible panorama unfolding before him demanded belief. Stride by stride, two colossal entities, each easily the scale of an entire planet, built with hands capable of cradling a globe like a child’s toy were actively walking through the dark directly along his vector.
At his blistering flight speed, the immense gulf of space evaporated in a heartbeat, thrusting him right into their path. Up close, the sheer scale of the titans reduced him to absolute insignificance. Even his expansive, mountain-dwarfing form was nothing more than a stray speck of dust, a microscopic pebble drifting between two gargantuan gods of the void.
Before he could even begin to process the physics of their existence, the chaotic roar of his own thoughts cut out entirely. Blinking through the void, he realized a colossal, golden iris an orb easily the size of a small, heavily populated world had shifted downward, locking dead onto him with an unblinking, incomprehensible gaze.
The crushing weight of that gaze stripped away every shred of curiosity he had, leaving only a raw, instinctual panic. He should have turned tail the very second those colossal silhouettes breached the horizon, but a traveler’s curiosity had lured him straight into the lion’s den.
With his heart hammering against his core, Tweet didn’t hesitate. His luminous, etheric form dissolved into a blinding streak of silver light, rocketing backward into the deep void at maximum velocity. He was banking on his legendary speed to chew through the light-years and put a safe, insurmountable ocean of space between himself and the entities.
Yet before he could fully tear through the dimensional fabric to safety, a sound rolled across the vacuum, not traveling through the dead air, but echoing directly inside his mind like the tolling of a bronze bell.
"Hello friend, we are merely travelers of the vast cosmos. We mean you no danger."
The voice was heavy, yet carrying a gentle resonance, warm enough to freeze Tweet mid-stride. He flew to a halt in the empty blackness, his feathers ruffling as he turned back to gauge the distance.
He was far now, millions of miles removed from where he started. But as his eyes focused on the titanic silhouettes looming in the distance, a cold realization settled into his bones. That vast expanse of space, which had taken him precious seconds of blistering acceleration to cross, was a distance these walking worlds could bridge with a few, unhurried stride.
A second voice rippled through the ether, lighter and laced with an unmistakable, teasing warmth. "It never ceases to amaze me, brother, how other beings always react the exact same way when they cross our path. First, there is reckless curiosity, and then, sudden terror."
"It never ceases to amuse me too" the first voice rumbled back, a deep chuckle that vibrated through the dead silence of space, causing the colossal shoulder of one titan to shake with silent laughter.
The entity that had spoken first leaned in, just that alone breached the distance "A biological, intelligent world-herald. Now that is a rare sight indeed."
Tweet stared up into the impossible expanse of their faces, his voice catching in his throat before he managed to force the words past his beak. "A world-herald?" he echoed, the title hanging heavily in the void, thick with profound confusion.
His bewilderment did not go unnoticed. Without a word, the two cosmic titans crossed their massive legs in unison, settling comfortably into the open vacuum of space like travelers pausing by a roadside fire, an unmistakable gesture that signaled they had nowhere to be, and every intention of having an unhurried conversation.
"Yes, you are a world herald. You have been handed the key to access the worlds in the vast cosmos, supposedly from the representatives of your world. That makes you a world herald," the one with a playful tone answered.
"Why then does me being an intelligent biological creature have to do with being a herald for my world?" Tweet, taking his humanoid form, also sat with crossed legs.
"Most cosmic keys aren’t fused into the essence of a biological lifeform, they mostly are rebuilt into growth artifacts that serve the same purpose you currently do, maybe not as informative as you ever will, but the end goal is all the same."
The one with the booming voice said, "You must be a trusted individual in your world to be handed such a purpose."
Tweet straightened out in response to those words. "Of course I am the most trusted by my creator."
A smile made its way to the two beings’ faces. Tweet looked at them and asked, "So what or who are you guys?"
Their was silence as the two entity looked at each other.
"We are the Drift born," the first titan answered, "Some call our kind the Striding Foundations, or simply the Rootless. We are the keepers of paths that have yet to be paved, carrying the dust of dead galaxies upon our soles so that new soil might find its footing in the dark."
"As for who we are," the playful one began, his voice carrying a light, melodic hum that rippled through the vacuum, "we are simply brothers bound by a singular obsession. While others fought for domains, carved up galaxies, or stay behind the boundaries of their home realms, we looked at the endless dark and felt... invited."
Tweet felt a strange warmth stir within his chest, for all their incomprehensible scale, there was a patience in them, a patience he found himself lacking. Even more, was the two shared the same desire as him to explore.
The two Driftborn exchanged a lingering, silent look, the vast expanse of their planetary faces softening with an amusement as ancient as the stars.
The sibling with the booming voice nodded, his tectonic chest rumbling softly. "We are travelers of the grand cosmos, little herald. We have no throne to defend, no origin god to report back to, and no key to chain us to a single purpose. We are just two brothers enamored by the infinite. Universe to universe, star-lane to star-lane, our only duty is to see what lies beyond the next horizon."
A sudden spark of eager excitement flared behind Tweet’s eyes. Without a second thought, his hand dipped into the folds of his space-warping garment and pulled out his thick, leather-bound journal, the very ledger where he meticulously cataloged every anomaly, lesson, and strange mechanic of deep space.
