Chapter 300: The golden fruit 11.

"Bai Li."

"Hmm?"

"You really have become more shameless lately."

Bai Li laughed softly. "Have I? I thought I was just telling the truth."

Yan Cijin gave her an annoyed look, but the corners of her lips lifted despite herself. She hated that Bai Li had become so good at saying these things with a completely calm expression. It made it impossible to tell whether Bai Li was joking or whether she really thought she looked good. Either way, her heart still beat a little faster every time Bai Li casually said something like this.

Of course, she did not let Bai Li see that.

She turned away and walked toward the living room. "Are you done checking the backpack?"

"Almost."

Bai Li looked back down and continued organizing everything.

Her internal space was already packed with an absurd amount of supplies. Food, bottled water, medical supplies, tools, batteries, clothes, blankets, fuel, spare equipment, canned food, frozen ingredients, cleaning supplies, weapons, and all kinds of other things were arranged inside the vast storage area. If an ordinary person had seen the amount of supplies she had accumulated, they would probably have wondered whether she had been preparing to survive an entire decade alone.

For Bai Li, however, it still did not feel like enough.

The apocalypse had already proven that the world could change faster than anyone expected. Something that was sufficient today could become useless tomorrow. A road that was safe in the morning could be filled with zombies by afternoon. A weapon that could kill one kind of monster might not work against another. The only thing she trusted was preparation.

She closed her eyes briefly and entered the internal space mentally.

The first thing she checked was her weapon storage.

The kukris were all in place. She had several of them stored inside the space, each one sharpened and ready to be used. The crossbows were also arranged carefully, along with spare strings and tools for repairs. The arrowheads were stored separately so that they would not become damaged from being thrown around. She checked the number of bolts and arrows and made sure everything was still accounted for.

She then checked the other supplies one by one.

Water.

Food.

Fuel.

Medicine.

Bandages.

Clothes.

Flashlights.

Batteries.

Portable tools.

Camping equipment.

Repair equipment.

Emergency supplies.

Everything was there.

The mountain of supplies inside her space made Bai Li feel a little more at ease. She had no intention of using the mall trip as an excuse to gamble recklessly. The goal was simple. They needed to get the golden fruit of immortality and return alive. Nothing else mattered.

She opened her eyes and reached for a backpack.

The backpack itself was not particularly large, but it was sturdy and comfortable enough to carry for several hours. Bai Li put a few packs of food inside first. She added bottles of water and some compact energy food that would not take up much space. Then she carefully placed the compound crossbow inside, followed by twenty arrows.

She checked the straps twice.

The crossbow was one of the most useful weapons they had for traveling through an area packed with zombies. It allowed them to attack from a distance without making as much noise as a gunshot. The arrows could also be recovered if the situation allowed it, which made them more practical during a long journey.

Bai Li then took one of the kukris and secured it around her waist.

After that, she picked up another one and walked toward Yan Cijin.

"Lift your shirt slightly."

Yan Cijin looked at her in confusion. "Why?"

"I’m going to attach this to your waist."

Yan Cijin lowered her eyes and saw the kukri in Bai Li’s hand. She immediately understood. "I can do it myself."

"I know."

Bai Li stepped closer anyway. "But your hands are busy."

"They are not."

"Then think of it as me helping you save a few seconds."

Yan Cijin wanted to argue, but Bai Li had already reached her. She carefully secured the weapon at her waist so that it would not interfere with her movement. Her fingers were steady, and her expression was serious. There was nothing strange about it. It was simply a necessary part of getting ready.

Yet Yan Cijin still felt strangely aware of how close she was standing.

Bai Li noticed the faint blush around her ears and quietly smiled.

"What are you smiling about?" Yan Cijin asked.

"Nothing."

"You are definitely smiling."

"I just think it looks good on you."

Yan Cijin immediately looked at her. "The weapon?"

Bai Li nodded. "The weapon too."

Yan Cijin’s cheeks warmed again.

"Bai Li."

"What?"

"Just finish packing."

"Alright."

Bai Li obediently stepped back, but the smile on her lips remained.

After making sure the kukri was secured properly, Bai Li took the revolver she had previously given Yan Cijin and checked the cylinder. The bullets were also accounted for.

She held the weapon out to her.

"Take this with you."

Yan Cijin took it without hesitation. "I will."

"Keep the bullets close. Do not use them unless you really need to."

"I know."

Bai Li nodded. She trusted Yan Cijin’s ability, but there was something about giving her a gun that still made Bai Li uneasy. A firearm meant they had one more option if everything else failed, but it also meant that the moment it was used, there would be no way to take back the sound. In a place like the mall, a single gunshot could attract more enemies than they could handle.

Yan Cijin looked at Bai Li and seemed to understand what she was thinking. "Don’t worry. I won’t waste the bullets."

"I know."

Bai Li adjusted the backpack on her shoulders and looked toward the living room.

Yan Laojin was sitting on the sofa with LiLi beside her.

The little girl had clearly realized that something was going on. She had been unusually quiet for the last few minutes, which was often a bad sign. She was looking at Bai Li and Yan Cijin with the expression of someone trying to figure out what adults were hiding from her.
