Chapter 294: The golden fruit 5.
Bai Li’s eyes slowly became sharper.
She knew perfectly well that going there would be dangerous.
There was a good chance that she would have to face stronger creatures than she had ever encountered before. There was also a chance that humans would be more troublesome than zombies. In a desperate fight over something this valuable, there would be no guarantee that the person holding the fruit would be allowed to leave alive.
Even worse, the attraction would continue increasing.
The longer she waited, the more enemies would gather.
But waiting did not make the problem disappear.
It only made it worse.
Bai Li lowered her eyes for a moment and thought about the people around her.
She thought about LiLi’s small figure.
She thought about the dangerous world outside.
She thought about the countless unknown creatures that might appear in the future.
And, without meaning to, her thoughts also returned to Yan Cijin.
She had never said it aloud, but somewhere along the way, the woman’s safety had started to matter to her more than it should have.
Bai Li did not know what Yan Cijin was thinking about her either. She only knew that sometimes, when she looked at Yan Cijin, there was a strange warmth that she could not quite explain. She had not bothered giving that feeling a name. There were too many things to worry about in this world, and neither of them had ever spoken about such things.
So Bai Li simply pushed the thought aside.
There would be time to think about it later.
Right now, there was something much more important.
The Golden Fruit of Immortality.
Jiangbei City.
Inorbit Supermall.
Top floor.
An impossible number of enemies.
An impossible amount of danger.
Bai Li slowly raised her head, and the hesitation in her eyes disappeared little by little.
She had already made up her mind.
No matter how dangerous it was, no matter how many zombies and monsters were waiting there, and no matter how many desperate humans might try to fight her for it, Bai Li was going to get the fruit no matter what.
Having made up her mind, She first had a talk with Yan Cijin.
Having made up her mind, She first had a talk with Yan Cijin.
Bai Li stood outside Yan Cijin’s room for several seconds without knocking. Her hand had already lifted, but somehow it stayed there in midair. She had faced groups of zombies without blinking. She had gone into dangerous buildings knowing perfectly well that something nasty might be waiting for her inside. She had even stood in front of things that could tear a normal person apart in a few seconds and still managed to keep her head clear. Yet now, standing in front of one ordinary door, she suddenly found herself hesitating.
It was ridiculous.
She lowered her hand and rubbed the back of her neck. The problem was not that she did not know what she wanted to say. She knew exactly what she wanted to say. The system had told her about the Golden Fruit of Immortality, the strange fruit born from the mutated pomelo tree in Jiangbei City’s Inorbit Supermall, and Bai Li had already decided that she had to get it. In this world, opportunities that could make people stronger were almost impossible to come by. Leaving something like that behind would be no different from watching a life saving medicine sit on a table and simply walking away because taking it would be dangerous.
The problem was Yan Cijin.
More specifically, the problem was that Bai Li knew exactly how Yan Cijin would react.
She would want to go.
And Bai Li did not want her to go.
That was the simplest way to put it.
The moment she had heard the system say that the fruit would attract high level zombies, mutated monsters, awakened humans, and even ordinary survivors whose instincts had been sharpened by the apocalypse, Bai Li had already pictured Yan Cijin standing in that dangerous place. She had imagined blood on Yan Cijin’s clothes, imagined her getting surrounded, imagined a monster appearing from somewhere they had not noticed. Every possible scene had flashed through her mind in a matter of seconds, and all of them had ended with the same conclusion.
No.
Yan Cijin could not go.
Bai Li knew that was probably unreasonable. She also knew she was not being completely objective anymore whenever Yan Cijin was involved. But knowing that and being able to control it were two very different things.
She finally knocked.
"Come in."
Yan Cijin’s voice came from inside, calm and familiar.
Bai Li opened the door.
The first thing she saw was LiLi sitting on the floor with a small pile of folded clothes beside her. The little girl was trying very seriously to arrange a few pieces of clothing into a neat little stack, although it was obvious that most of her folding technique involved simply squashing everything down with both hands. Yan Cijin was sitting nearby, fixing the collar of one of LiLi’s shirts and watching her with a faint smile.
LiLi noticed Bai Li almost immediately.
"Mommy Bai Li!"
Her little face brightened at once.
Bai Li’s expression softened without her even realizing it.
"What are you doing?"
"Helping Mommy."
LiLi proudly pointed at the pile of clothes.
Bai Li crouched down beside her and looked at the little tower. She picked up one of the shirts, unfolded it, and looked at LiLi with exaggerated seriousness.
"This is very neat."
LiLi nodded enthusiastically.
"I folded it!"
"I can tell."
Yan Cijin glanced at Bai Li and noticed the smile on her face. For some reason, her own mood became a little lighter.
She had always liked seeing this side of Bai Li.
Bai Li could be cold when she needed to be. She could stand in front of danger without fear and make decisions with a calmness that sometimes made Yan Cijin wonder whether Bai Li even understood what fear was.
