Chapter 277: That’s my daughter.
Bai Li’s hair had loosened a little at the sides, and a few wet strands stuck to her cheek. Yan Cijin looked even worse in a way that made Bai Li’s eyes keep drifting over without her even noticing. The woman’s neck was damp, her collar was a little crooked from all the moving around, and the sweat that slid down from behind her ear looked way too distracting for a room where they had just been stacking instant noodles and canned food like crazy.
Bai Li drank most of a bottle of electrolyte water and said with a smile, "I told you, didn’t I? We still need to finish the work before taking a shower, otherwise it’ll be a waste. Look at me, I’ll have to take another shower before going to sleep."
As soon as she said that, Yan Cijin’s ears turned bright red again, like someone had turned the heat up on her from inside. She drank a few sips of the cool electrolyte water and finally let out a slow breath. Her face was still red, but her expression did calm down a little. "Well then, let’s go pick up my mom and LiLi first. As for my things, we’ll move them here tomorrow morning."
Bai Li nodded right away. Organizing all these supplies today had already taken way too much energy. Even with her spatial ability, once she started moving this much stuff around, the repeated back and forth still made her arms and shoulders ache. "Okay, I’ll throw these frozen foods back into my space first, otherwise they’ll really spoil."
The refrigerators in Bai Li’s home and Yan Cijin’s home were already crammed full. Those frozen foods were just too much for the two small fridges to handle. Bai Li had already planned to eat them over the next few days, since after that the weather and the power situation outside might become even worse. If they got spoiled now, that would really be a waste, and Bai Li hated wasting food more than anything else. In the apocalypse, food was already fragile enough. Every bag of dumplings, every pack of meat, every box of frozen fish felt like a little piece of safety that could disappear in a blink.
Bai Li finished the rest of the electrolyte water in one gulp, then let out a long sigh and shifted her attention to the messy pile on the floor. With a thought, all the frozen food piled in the living room disappeared into her spatial dimension. The instant it was gone, the room looked a lot more open. The wall beside the TV was still packed, but at least people could walk through without stepping on a random bag of vegetables or hitting their knee on a box of dumplings.
Yan Cijin also finished the last sip of water in her bottle. She stood up, stretched her stiff shoulders, and said, "Let’s go."
Bai Li nodded and followed Yan Cijin out the door. The two of them quickly entered Yan Cijin’s house. The moment the door opened, Bai Li could hear the baby making a little happy sound from the living room, and Yan Cijin’s mother answered from inside the bedroom almost at the same time.
"Mom, pack your things for tonight. We’re moving to Bai Li’s place," Yan Cijin called out toward the bedroom.
Yan Laojin quickly responded, "Yes, coming."
She carried the little girl to the living room and let her play by herself for a while, while Yan Laojin and Yan Cijin went back to their room to pack. The little girl sat on the carpet with her toys scattered around her, small hands grabbing a toy rabbit and then a little plastic car, her attention jumping around like a lively little bird. Whenever she found something new, she would let out a soft sound, the kind that made people feel like the whole house was warmer.
Yan Laojin turned on the light in the bedroom and started folding the sheets and blankets. Seeing that her daughter’s clothes were soaked with sweat, she asked in a teasing voice with a laugh, "What were you two doing over there? You’re sweating so much. Did you bag her already? I knew it, that’s my daughter."
Yan Cijin froze for a second, then immediately made a face so bitter it looked like she had just swallowed a whole lemon. "Mom, we were working. Really working. I think I was wrong before. Bai Li didn’t seem to want me to keep my promise. Otherwise, we would have already done something after we were alone together. In the end, we just frantically moved things for two hours."
As soon as she said that, Yan Cijin felt both amused and exhausted at the same time. She had been sure before that Bai Li had been teasing her on purpose, that Bai Li must have been trying to make her nervous. But after two hours of moving supplies, stacking boxes, shifting frozen food, moving blankets, carrying water, and running back and forth with sweaty arms and tired legs, she had started to realize she might have been the only one losing her mind.
Yan Laojin looked at her daughter for a while, then burst out laughing. "So you really spent two hours moving stuff?"
Yan Cijin rubbed her forehead. "What else would it be? I even told her we should take a shower first and she said no, because she thought it would be a waste if we got sweaty again later. Then she just started working like crazy. She even used her space to move half the frozen food. I was the one who misunderstood."
Yan Laojin’s mouth twitched as she folded a blanket. "Then you misunderstood her?"
Yan Cijin’s face got even hotter. "Mom, don’t say it like that."
"It sounds exactly like what happened," Yan Laojin said with a grin, not even trying to hide it. "You two are both so weird. One of you is thinking about work, the other one is thinking about, well, more personal things, and then both of you end up sweating like crazy in the same room. Of course I’d think something happened."
