Chapter 38: You Don’t Have A License?
Before Hammon could say anything, Kai stormed over furiously and said, "You two bastard men and women. You don’t know how to spell ’death,’ do you? You’ve got some nerve scamming people all the way to Brother Angler’s place."
Hammon and Angler frowned at that. Kai had already charged right up to them and sneered, "No upper limit on the budget, huh? You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that. You’ll say anything."
"Hey, you two, having a date here?"
Anna just smiled lightly.
Tina felt a bit guilty and pulled her hand away from Kai, stepping back and lowering her head.
Ryan wasn’t good with words and didn’t know how to argue. He simply asked calmly, "Brother Angler, which is the best car here right now?"
Before Angler could answer, Hammon seemed eager to watch the drama unfold and immediately grinned, "He doesn’t have any limited-edition cars here, but that Ferrari SF90 from the auto show is pretty nice."
"If I weren’t tight on cash, I’d grit my teeth and buy it myself."
Angler frowned at Kai and said, "Kai, shut up. Watch your mouth here. Ryan is my invited guest."
"Fine... okay!"
Kai agreed, but still insisted stubbornly, "Brother Angler, you should still be careful. This guy is a well-known poor student at our school, the kind who relies on subsidies every year."
"Brother Angler told you to shut up!"
Hammon looked at him with a smile.
This guy was all casual and seemed pretty unserious, but when he smiled with those squinty eyes, it looked pretty damn intimidating.
Kai didn’t dare say another word. But he wasn’t giving up, he followed along and turned back to tell Tina, "Babe, let’s go watch too. Let’s see how he makes a fool of himself."
Angler led the way, walking inside and calling over a worker to open a glass display case. Inside was a rose-red Ferrari.
"Ryan, this is the best car from the show, the Ferrari SF90..."
Angler said casually, "The specs are all public, so I won’t bore you with them. I’ll send you a detailed intro later."
"What do you think?"
Ryan asked Anna in his arms.
Anna’s heart started pounding wildly. Staring at this dreamlike luxury supercar in front of her, she stammered, "Ryan, this car, this car must be really expensive."
"My driving skills aren’t that good, right... Never mind, it’s too valuable. I can’t accept it."
Not to mention her being tongue-tied, even Tina, who was seeing a so-called supercar for the first time, had her eyes wide open. Kai was also staring at the flashy car with a look of longing.
"I haven’t even said how much it costs, and you’re already saying it’s expensive. Geez."
Ryan said with a doting smile. In truth, the car’s appearance alone made it clear it wasn’t cheap, and even Ryan, who came from a poor background, felt a bit daunted.
Hammon chimed in at just the right moment, "It’s not expensive. All together, it’s less than 800,000. Even less than what your Ryan tipped you."
"Then this is the one!!!"
Ryan just wanted to spend more money, but he still needed to confirm: "Brother Angler, is this the most expensive one you have right now? If not, I don’t want it."
Only the expensive stuff, everything else doesn’t matter...
This damn tycoon was really generous. Even the Petrol min bosses from back in the day weren’t this extravagant, were they?
Everyone present was stunned. Even Angler, a rich second-generation heir with deep pockets, was taken aback. Then he spoke up, "Among the cars I have in stock right now, this is the best one."
"Many luxury cars need to be ordered. With customs clearance and everything, it can take up to six months to arrive. Unless it’s a big auto show, you won’t have many options available on the spot."
"Then this one it is. Where do I handle the paperwork?"
Ryan sounded a bit disappointed and said, "Next time there’s some auto show or whatever, you have to let me know right away."
Angler was a bit flustered by how straightforward he was. Regaining his composure, he immediately said, "Let’s talk upstairs!" At the bar on the second floor, Angler had already called over his staff to start on the initial procedures.
Tina and Kai were still sitting at the bar drinking what they had ordered earlier. Both felt somewhat bitter, especially Kai, who was dead set on seeing Ryan make a fool of himself.
Hammon asked with a chuckle, "Brother, what do you usually drive? If you need maintenance, you can bring it here. Brother Angler’s prices are always the best around."
"And don’t worry about the master mechanics here, they can maintain and repair any kind of supercar. They won’t mess up your car."
Kai coughed awkwardly at that. Everyone at this club drove expensive cars, if not supercars, then genuine luxury vehicles.
In comparison, his brand-new 5 Series, well, it wasn’t even brand new. He bought it used for just over 60,000. Normally, he wouldn’t even qualify to join this place.
They just didn’t bother with him and let him in through the back door so he could show off. That’s why he always felt inferior every time he came.
Ryan said sheepishly, "I don’t even know how to drive yet."
"Huh??"
At that, everyone stared in surprise with wide eyes. Even Tina was the same, although she didn’t own a car, she did have a driver’s license.
Hammon was dumbfounded: "Wait, brother, you’re kidding me, right?"
Ryan was honest by nature and explained, "For real. I’ve always wanted to get my license, but I never got around to it."
One reason was that he’d never saved up enough money; another was that he genuinely wanted to get it.
His dream before was to drive for Uber and have his own ride-hailing car. If not, being a designated driver seemed like good money too.
If he couldn’t find a job after college, driving for a living wouldn’t be a bad option either.
Angler came over and said with a mix of laughter and exasperation, "No way, Ryan. You’re that lazy?"
Ryan smiled awkwardly and scratched his head.
"Besides, I like to have a little drink now and then, so driving isn’t really for me."
"Ride-hailing and taxis are super convenient now. Plus, I’m still in college, I don’t really need to go out much."
Ryan wasn’t good with words, but chatting with them put him at ease: "Right now, I just like riding my little e-scooter. It’s really comfortable."
Hammon immediately slapped his thigh and said, "You’re absolutely right. Damn it, the traffic in Videl is a nightmare."
"I went to Harbin Road for some business today at noon. I was stuck in traffic and my blood pressure hit 180. Watching those little e-scooters and bicycles zip past me one after another, damn, it pissed me off."
Angler laughed heartily.
"Ryan, you’re really carefree. So you’re into drinking too, huh?"
"How about a drink first? I don’t have anything fancy here, but there’s a bottle of limited-edition Martell in my office. Not sure if it’s to your taste."
