Chapter 48: Under the table

Breakfast began in a very unusual atmosphere.

Elowen was still wearing Erik’s oversized coat. After he’d refastened the buttons, all the important parts were covered, but the collar was still a bit loose, exposing her collarbones along with the faint red marks trailing down below.

She sat to Erik’s left, her silver hair still slightly tangled. The ring on her hand kept catching the sunlight every time she lifted her spoon.

Meira sat across from them. She had changed into a long white dress, her golden hair brushed neatly behind her back. Judging only by her calm exterior, no one could have guessed what happened in Erik’s room the night before.

"Try this."

Elowen scooped up a spoonful of soup and held it in front of Erik’s mouth.

He looked at the spoon, then at her.

"I can feed myself."

"I know." Elowen kept her hand exactly where it was, her emerald eyes fixed on him full of expectation. "But I want to feed you."

Erik looked slightly helpless.

"You just woke up. Eat your own food first."

The smile on Elowen’s face slowly shrank. She looked down at the spoonful of soup, her voice growing quieter.

"I know you don’t need anyone to wait on you. You can cook, fight, and take care of yourself far better than most men."

She gripped the spoon handle a little tighter.

"But if I’m not even allowed to do small things like this, I’ll feel completely useless."

Erik was about to speak when Elowen raised her head to look at him.

"I’m not doing it out of obligation. I really do like taking care of you. When I see you eating something I gave you, it makes me so happy."

The smile returned to her face, sincere yet carrying a hint of hesitation, as if she were afraid he would still refuse.

Erik looked at her for a few seconds, then opened his mouth.

Elowen froze, then happily brought the spoon over. He finished it, and she carefully wiped a small drop from the corner of his lips with a napkin.

"Is it good?"

"I’m the one who cooked it."

"But I’m the one who fed it to you." Elowen corrected him with complete seriousness. "The feeling has to be different."

Erik couldn’t find a counterargument. Meira burst out laughing from across the table.

"If she wants to do it, just let her. Otherwise she’ll spend the whole day thinking she was rejected."

Elowen blushed a little.

"I’m not that bad."

"And who was running through the hallway crying this morning?"

"Mom."

Elowen drew the word out in warning. Meira smiled and lifted her teacup, declining to tease her daughter any further.

Erik didn’t stop her either. He let Elowen keep feeding him spoonfuls of soup, occasionally accepting a piece of meat or bread she offered. Every time he ate, the corners of Elowen’s lips curved up a little more.

Her happiness was so simple that it softened him.

Erik didn’t want Elowen to treat serving him as her only worth. But if caring for the person she loved truly made her happy, there was no need to stubbornly refuse.

"You eat too."

He picked up a piece of meat and held it to Elowen’s lips.

Her eyes went wide.

"For me?"

"Who else would I be giving it to?"

Elowen obediently opened her mouth. When her lips accidentally brushed Erik’s fingertips, her cheeks flushed red at once. She chewed slowly, her eyes curving with delight.

"It really does taste better."

Erik laughed.

"You just said the exact line I was about to say."

The two of them looked at each other. The atmosphere around the table was so warm that even Meira, sitting across from them, felt something soften in her chest.

But that tenderness didn’t make her behave any better.

Meira set down her teacup and slowly slipped the house slipper off her right foot. Beneath the long dress, her pale foot traveled toward the opposite side and touched Erik’s ankle.

He paused, very slightly.

Elowen was still focused on cutting a small piece of pastry, completely unaware of what was happening under the table.

Meira maintained her composed expression. Her foot followed the line of Erik’s trouser leg, slowly rubbing up his firm calf.

Erik looked up at her.

Meira sipped her tea and met his gaze. Her green eyes were still gentle, but the heat inside them was barely concealed. The corners of her lips curved up ever so slightly.

In this society, most men guarded their bodies even more strictly than the most carefully protected women. A Succubus who wanted to touch her Partner had to ask permission, especially in front of others.

But Erik had never asked Meira to be that reserved.

His ease, combined with what had happened last night, had made her far bolder.

Her foot continued upward, moving from his knee to the inside of his thigh.

Erik set down his spoon.

"Is something wrong?" Elowen asked quickly.

"It’s nothing."

He reached one hand beneath the table and caught Meira’s ankle just as her toes were about to reach dangerous territory.

Meira flinched slightly. A flush appeared briefly on her cheeks, but her gaze only grew hotter. She tried to pull her foot back, and Erik held it firmly in place.

Elowen scooped up another spoonful.

"Erik, open up."

He looked at Elowen smiling cheerfully, then looked back at Meira. In the end, he still opened his mouth and ate what she offered, while the hand under the table gave that restless ankle a gentle squeeze.

Meira pressed her lips together.

The feeling of being held by Erik sent a numbing current running from her foot up her thigh. She watched him chew, her eyes looking ready to devour the man in front of her whole.

After a while, Erik let go of Meira’s ankle. He assumed she knew to stop, but the moment his hand withdrew, that foot slid right back up.

This time, her toes brushed directly over the place that had already begun to strain against his trousers.

Erik’s breathing slowed.

Meira bit her lip lightly. Beneath the table, she used the top of her foot to stroke along the shape growing steadily more defined, her movements slow but thoroughly provocative.

"Mom, your face is a little red." Elowen suddenly spoke up. "Are you feeling unwell?"

Meira’s foot stopped.

She calmly lifted her teacup.

"Perhaps the food was a bit hot."

Elowen looked skeptically at the soup that had already cooled, then at her mother. Meira’s expression didn’t change in the slightest; she simply withdrew her foot in silence.

Erik looked at her for one more second.

That look told Meira the matter wasn’t finished.

Breakfast stretched on for nearly thirty minutes. Elowen spent most of it busy taking care of Erik, while Meira occasionally found opportunities to touch his leg beneath the table. By the time the last plate was cleared, Erik had needed a great deal of patience to maintain a normal appearance.

He stood up to gather the dishes. Elowen immediately caught his wrist.

"Absolutely not."

"It’s just a few plates."

"You already made breakfast." She pulled him back with complete seriousness. "The servants can handle the rest."

"I can wash them myself."

"But I don’t want you to."

Elowen hugged his arm, wearing a rare look of firmness.

"If you keep doing everything yourself, the people in this house won’t know what to do with themselves anymore. Besides, you still have to visit Felyn at the hospital. There’s no need to waste time here."

Erik looked at her and finally set the plates down. Two handmaidens who had been waiting near the door came in to clear the table.

"All right." He glanced at the oversized coat on Elowen. "Then go back to your room and change first. And while you’re at it, pick out something suitable for me to wear to the hospital."

Elowen’s eyes lit up.

"You’ll let me choose?"

"Mm."

She stood up happily. The coat slipped down a little, forcing Elowen to blush and tug it back into place.

"Wait for me. I’ll pick the best outfit."

With that, she hurried out of the dining room. A light gust of wind followed her steps, lifting her silver hair into the air.

Only when the sound of Elowen’s footsteps had faded up the stairs did Erik turn to Meira.

She was still sitting across from him, one foot already back in its slipper. Her face was as composed as though she hadn’t been the one teasing him under the table moments ago.

Erik walked over.

Meira looked up.

"Is something the ma-"

He grabbed her wrist and pulled hard.

"Ah!"

Meira lost her balance and landed squarely in Erik’s lap as he sat down in the chair beside her. Her legs naturally parted, straddling one of his thighs. Her arms wrapped around his neck on reflex.

The surprise lasted only a second. Then Meira’s body went soft.

She pressed close against Erik, her full chest compressed between them until it lost its shape. The warmth came through the thin dress, letting him feel every mature curve.

"You startled me." Meira pouted, though the corners of her lips wouldn’t stop curling upward. "I was starting to think you’d let it slide."

"You did it on purpose the entire breakfast."

"I merely touched you by accident."

Erik looked at her.

Meira laughed and deliberately rubbed her chest against his. Her red lips drew close to his ear.

"Fine, it was on purpose. Can you blame me when I like your reactions so much?"

She took Erik’s hand, trying to draw it inside the neckline of her dress.

"Touch me a little."

Erik didn’t oblige. He wrapped one arm around her waist, holding her body firmly in place, and raised his other hand.

Smack!

The crisp sound rang through the dining room.

Meira jolted hard. The chest pressed against him shook, and the round curve beneath her dress trembled in waves.

Her eyes went wide. The burning heat from where he’d struck quickly turned into a numbing current that ran straight to her lower belly.

"Erik..."

Meira’s voice went soft. A thin film of moisture covered her green eyes, and her arms tightened around his waist as if begging.

Erik watched the reaction and raised an eyebrow.

"You like that?"

Meira pressed her lips together and didn’t answer. But her body pushed closer of its own accord, her hips lifting slightly as though waiting.

Erik exhaled and delivered another.

Smack!

Meira shuddered violently. A small moan nearly escaped her lips, but she caught it in time. Her legs clenched together beneath her dress, her hips unconsciously grinding against Erik’s thigh.

He leaned close to her ear, his voice dropping low.

"When I get back tonight, I’m going to punish you."

Meira wasn’t the least bit afraid. Her eyes lit up, brimming with anticipation.

"I’ll be waiting."

She lifted her face and pressed a light kiss to Erik’s lips. Before pulling away, the tip of her tongue deliberately traced across his lower lip.

"But if you forget tonight..." Meira laughed softly. "I’ll come to your room and remind you myself."

Erik shook his head and released her waist.

If not for the physique the Primordial Incubus had remade, he genuinely doubted he’d survive being drained dry by these Succubi before he managed to climb even one more rank.

Meira returned to the chair across from him and straightened her dress. Even so, her gaze stayed glued to Erik, hotter and hungrier than before.

While waiting for Elowen, Erik leaned back in his chair and quietly called out in his mind.

’System.’

A black panel with a purple sheen appeared before his eyes.

Erik’s gaze settled on the two numbers that had just changed.

[Emotional Energy Progress: 17.5%]

[Faith Progress: 0.25%]
