SSS-Ranked Talent: Endless Adaptation

Chapter 44: The Sentinel’s Hearth

Chapter 44: The Sentinel’s Hearth

Cecilia watched the heavy citadel doors slide shut after Julian’s furious departure, her lazy, unbothered smirk returning to her pale lips in a heartbeat. She turned back to Thomas, her ebony eyes meticulously scanning his tattered uniform jacket and the dried crimson fluid staining his collar.

"Come on, freshman," Cecilia murmured smoothly, gesturing for him to follow as she stepped down a wide, stone corridor lined with high level mana sconces. "Let’s get you away from these idiots so you can actually rest."

She led him deep into the residential wing of the citadel, stopping before a massive, reinforced iron door that carried an empty nameplate. The room inside was expansive and pristine, containing a wide mattress, a personal training circle etched with low density gravity runes, and a private window that looked out over the sweeping, wind swept architecture of the upper spires. It was an elite sanctuary, a world apart from the cramped quarters of the lower freshman tier.

Thomas stepped into the center of the room, his jaw clenching slightly as his fractured ribs continued to throb with a dull, heavy heat.

"This is your space from now on," Cecilia said, leaning comfortably against the stone doorframe with her arms crossed over her breastplate. "But don’t get too comfortable just yet. Your time in the lower tier might be over, but you are still an academy student. You will continue your daily curriculum with Class 1-A starting tomorrow morning."

Thomas turned to look at her, his face a perfectly neutral mask. He remained entirely silent about the true nature of his capabilities. He never told anyone anything about his talent, keeping the secrets of his system completely locked away behind his eyes.

"You will also undergo a special structuring regiment from now on," Cecilia explained, her beautiful voice carrying a calm weight. "You will be receiving proper training from now on, entirely different from the standard lessons that they offer down below. The council has arranged a separate instructor to oversee your development and help you hone your talent."

She paused, her sharp gaze tracking the shredded fabric of his trousers and his ruined white jacket."

Furthermore, we need to get you properly equipped," Cecilia continued, her posture straightening slightly. "You will be receiving an entirely new pair of academy uniforms tomorrow, the exact same variant that the Horsemen wear to signify your promotion to the elite tier. You will also be receiving a completely custom battle suit for real combat operations. Tell me what type of specialized armor or combat clothing you would prefer so I can submit the blueprints to the administrative forge."

Thomas thought about his needs carefully, keeping his absolute adaptation mechanics completely hidden. He wanted a truly cool, badass set of gear that would serve him perfectly without drawing unwanted attention to his physical shifts.

"A midnight black tactical bodysuit layered with lightweight carbon mesh and reinforced leather plating," Thomas stated, his flat voice carrying a firm, unrefined grit. "It needs a high collar, stealth utility rigging across the chest, and flexible, decoupled armor joints on the shoulders and knees. Make sure the under-mesh can stretch seamlessly under intense pressure without tearing the material."

"A high tier tactical rogue suit. Sleek, dark, and highly specialized," Cecilia nodded, a faint, amused smile playing at the corners of her mouth. She turned to leave the threshold, but right as her hand touched the doorframe, she stopped completely. The lazy, playful energy around her form instantly evaporated, replaced by an incredibly heavy, suffocating pressure that caused the ambient temperature in the room to plummet. She didn’t turn around to face him. She kept her back to the room, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly cold, icy octave that sent a sudden, bone chilling jolt of adrenaline straight down Thomas’s spine.

"And one more thing, freshman," Cecilia whispered, the sheer authority in her tone giving him actual chills. "We cannot have that girl kissing you on the cheek again. It is entirely inappropriate."

Thomas froze, his breath catching in his throat as the chilling weight of her reference to Mina’s soft peck hit his chest. Before he could even force his lips to form a single response to the bizarre command, the freezing pressure vanished, and Cecilia glided seamlessly down the corridor, her soft, raspy chuckle fading into the shadows.

Thomas let out a slow, controlled breath, allowing his muscles to relax. He didn’t waste any time resting in his new bed. Stifling the sharp pain in his midsection, he left the elite citadel and took the grand mechanical lift back down through the inner core of the academy tower, heading straight toward the familiar, dim corridors of the freshman barracks. He needed to see his friends.

He reached the residential sector, his boots crunching softly against the cold stone floor as he walked down the quiet avenue of the freshman barracks. He stopped right outside the heavy wooden door of Unit 112, his hand pausing over the iron handle for a brief second before he pushed the door wide open.

The small dormitory room was filled with an intense, suffocating anxiety.

Ryan was sitting on the edge of his mattress, his torso still heavily wrapped in white bandages, his face pale and his wind core visibly unhealed from his peak sequence the day before. Lina was sitting quietly by the center table, her eyes red, while Mina was busy pacing frantically across the floor, her hands clenching and unclenching as she muttered under her breath.

The moment the heavy door ground open, every single head in the room violently snapped toward the entrance.

Thomas stood in the doorway, his uniform tattered, his chest still tightly wrapped in blood stained linen sheets, and his posture slightly uneven from his bruised leg. Looking at their wide, shell shocked expressions, he raised his right hand slightly in an incredibly awkward gesture.

"Hey," Thomas said softly, his flat voice breaking the heavy silence.

The greeting barely left his lips before the room completely erupted. Mina stopped her pacing, Lina jumped up from her chair, and even Ryan forced his battered body off the mattress without a single care for his empty core. They didn’t say a single word. In a fraction of a second, all three of his friends rushed forward like a tidal wave, violently throwing their arms around him and trapping him in a tight, overwhelming hug that completely ignored his broken ribs and brought a genuine, warm smile to his tattered face.
