Chapter 42: The Face Behind The Helm

Chapter 42: The Face Behind The Helm

The heavy iron collar of the ebony plate armour released a sudden, sharp hiss of pressurized steam as the runic seals disengaged.

Cecilia raised both hands to the base of her throat, her gauntlets moving with a practiced, seamless fluidity as she unlocked the interlocking steel plates. With a crisp, metallic click that echoed clearly over the quiet sands of the Arena, she slowly took off her helm.

Thomas stood perfectly rigid, his breath catching in his throat as the heavy headpiece was lifted away to reveal her face. Long, raven black hair tumbled down over the dark steel collar of her chestplate, the strands dancing loosely in the freezing high altitude wind of the tower apex. Her pale features were completely bare, her silver rimmed glasses noticeably absent from her face. She looked directly at him, her striking ebony eyes carrying a soft, familiar weight that instantly shattered the terrifying, majestic aura of the Midnight Valkyrie.

She flashed him a slow, lazy smile, her pale lips curving into that exact same playful smirk he had seen under the dim torchlight of the archives.

Standing beneath the open sky, the sudden revelation caused the scattered pieces of the puzzle to violently violently connect inside Thomas’s mind. He had been left in a complete daze after hearing Julian address her, but now, looking at the older girl’s bare face, the truth was undeniable. Cecilia was Julian’s older sister by a single year. Now that the glasses were gone, their uncanny biological resemblance was loud and undeniable. They carried the exact same sharp, aristocratic nose, the same pale, flawless skin, and those deep, vacant ebony eyes that looked down at the world as if it were a chessboard. Yet, while Julian’s presence was a jagged, suffocating spike of cold malice, Cecilia’s energy was fluid, heavy, and completely shrouded in a lazy, unbothered calm. She was the very same senior who sat beside his infirmary bed, the one who had watched over him after his awakening.

Before Thomas could even force his lips to form a word of response, the administrative bells of the academy spire rang out once more, signaling the formal conclusion of the freshman tournament.

Up on the grand elevated platform, President Cedric of House Wisa exchanged a brief, silent glance with Vice President Declan and Director Seraphina. Seeing that the new elite inductees had been successfully established and the initial baseline evaluations were complete, Cedric raised his hand, gesturing toward the staff to dismiss the stadium.

"The tournament is officially adjourned," President Cedric’s voice echoed across the tiers. "Clear the grounds."

With the formal administrative order dropped, the heavy tension holding the Crimson Arena finally began to fracture. The thousands of High blood spectators who had spent the morning watching the bloody execution slowly rose from their stone tiers, their fearful, quiet murmurs filling the cold air as they began the long descent back toward the lower blocks. The four elders of the Academy Council turned on their heels, their long, flowing robes billowing behind them as they glided off the elevated platform, disappearing into the inner administrative spires.

Down on the black sand, the remaining members of the Horsemen of Calamity prepared to move out as well. Edward the Drunken Fist slung his heavy iron staff over his shoulder, his deep blue eyes trailing toward the exit tunnels, while Bron the Scarred Knight adjusted his great helm under his arm, his hard face set into a neutral mask. Sabrina of House Caldun let out a faint sigh, her glass like wings fluttering with a soft starlight dust as she turned away, followed closely by Peter, the Ghost of Samra, whose trench coat blended seamlessly into the gathering shadows of the perimeter walls.

They moved with the quiet, unbothered grace of individuals who had already seen everything the freshman tier had to offer, their massive mana signatures slowly withdrawing as they walked toward the private elevators.

But Cecilia did not join them.

She remained standing perfectly still in the center of the ring, her heavy ebony boots anchored in the loose black sand just a few paces away from Thomas. As the last of the cohort disappeared into the shadows of the high tower corridors, she tilted her head, her raven black hair shifting over her shoulder as she looked at Thomas with a distinctly sly, amused expression. The terrifying weight of the Midnight Valkyrie had completely evaporated, replaced entirely by that sharp, teasing persona from the restricted archives.

"I am pretty f**king awesome, ain’t I?" Cecilia asked, her beautiful voice dropping into that quiet, slightly raspy drawl that Thomas knew all too well.

Thomas merely nodded his head, keeping his face masked in his usual unreadable calm, though internally his thoughts were a complex tangle of caution. His chest was still throbbing violently beneath his fresh linen wraps, his broken ribs aching with every breath he took, but his focus was entirely locked on the girl before him. He simply did not know how to address her anymore. She was no longer just a lazy, eccentric senior who happened to frequent the dark corners of the library; she was a generational national treasure, the vice captain of the absolute most lethal cohort in the entire kingdom, and the older sister of his primary existential threat. Every rule of survival he had developed told him that the high blood houses were a hive of vipers, and finding out her true identity made her look less like a casual ally and more like a beautifully concealed trap.

Cecilia’s ebony eyes narrowed slightly as she tracked his rigid posture, her sharp perception instantly noting the subtle, cautious wall he had thrown up between them. She let out another soft, raspy chuckle, stepping closer until the dark, runed steel of her chestplate was inches away from his tattered white jacket.

"Stop that," Cecilia murmured playfully, her tone carrying an unshakeable, quiet authority that brook no argument. "You looking at me different. Act the way you have always did in front of me, freshman. Never treat me any different just because of who I am."

Thomas let out a slow, controlled breath, allowing his muscle fibers to relax slightly beneath his uniform. He looked at her bare face, noting the absolute sincerity in her grey eyes behind the devilish smirk. "It is a bit difficult to act normal when I just found out that my cool and laid back senior is the one and only Cecilia Carter, Senior," Thomas said, his voice flat but carrying a faint hint of his usual grit.

"Oh spare me the bullsh*t," Cecilia smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners as she reached down to securely latch her runic helm to the leather utility loop at her hip. "Keep that exact same attitude, don’t you start bowing and scraping like the rest of the people downstairs. "

She turned her back to the monolithic awakening crystal, her heavy cloak snapping in the wind as she gestured toward the central mechanical archways of the stadium. "Follow me. Your time in the freshman barracks is officially over. Let’s go see what your new home looks like."

Thomas didn’t hesitate. He steeled his jaw against the sharp, burning heat radiating from his torso, keeping his stride measured and level as he stepped into line behind her. Together, the lesser blood freshman and the high blood vice captain walked across the blood stained black sand, leaving the empty, stage of the Arena behind as they exited through the heavy iron threshold.
