SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System

Chapter 93: Charts Ask Him

Chapter 93: Charts Ask Him

"Keep your head below the granite parapet, Ruby, they have an optical spotter in the watchtower."

The wind howling over Fort Mercer’s outer ramparts was sharp and salty, carrying the cold spray of the breaking surf below.

"I see the lens glinting between the sandbags, Fin... sixty yards out, ten o’clock."

"Maya, what are your radio direction finders showing?"

Maya lay prone in the marsh grass, her antenna array aimed toward the concrete dome of the redoubt.

"Carrier signal is transmitting continuously at five-twelve point four megahertz, Fin... matching the transmitter we pulled from the canal crawler."

"How many biological signatures inside the bunker?"

"Four distinct humanoid heat traces in the lower communications room, and two mechanical sentry constructs patrolling the ammunition hoist."

"Can you trace their power feed?"

"They tapped into the decommissioned coastal seawall generator lines, running sixty kilowatts of stolen current."

His local Sense attribute buzzed with a sharp, localized static, picking up the signature of synthetic mana batteries thirty paces into the earth.

"The artificial mana density is concentrated near the north foundation wall, Ruby... looks like an old subterranean magazine."

"Is the seawall foundation stable?"

"No... three major stress fractures run down the outer concrete revetment where the tide has undercut the pilings."

"If a leviathan slams into that cracked revetment, the entire southern seawall will buckle inward."

"Which is exactly why Genesis set their surveillance post right here," Nila whispered, crawling up beside Ruby with a compact rangefinder. "They are monitoring the structural failure in real time."

"Let’s blind the spotter and breach the lower bunker hatch."

"Nila, take the watchtower optic with a suppressed dart."

"Lining up the elevation now, Fin."

A soft, pneumatic cough hissed through the grass as Nila released the spring-loaded dart from her wrist rail.

High above on the watchtower, the glass lens of the optical scanner shattered into silent fragments, the operator jerking back in surprise.

"Optic disabled, go!"

Fin vaulted over the stone parapet, hitting the salt marsh at full sprint with Depth Hydro-Locomotion cutting the water resistance to zero.

Fin’s boots struck the concrete apron of the bunker hatch with concussive, balanced force.

"Apex Gaze!"

The two mechanical sentries froze mid-stride, their weapon arms drooping as their targeting loops spun out of alignment.

Two clean, brutal strokes of Fin’s hatchet severed the constructs’ cervical cables, sending their steel chassis crashing onto the gravel.

Ruby drove her shoulder into the iron bunker door with a concussive boom, splintering the rusted deadbolt.

"Hands on your heads, face the floorboards!"

Inside the damp, circular control room, three technicians in grease-stained coveralls scrambled backward, their hands flying into the air.

The fourth man, seated at the primary radio console, attempted to sweep a pile of magnetic tapes into an incinerator chute.

A single stride carried Fin across the concrete floor, his boot pinning his wrist hard against the steel tabletop.

"Step away from the chute."

"Don’t... don’t shoot! I am just a contract radio operator!"

"Then you will live to answer questions in open court," Fin said, sweeping the intact tapes into Maya’s bag.

"What were you transmitting, operator?" Ruby demanded, her spear point hovering inches above his chest.

"Just... just telemetry bursts to an archive server in District Two," the operator stammered, raising his trembling hands.

"Which archive server?"

"The old Facility Zero backup repository... where the synthetic templates are stored!"

"Facility Zero?" Maya asked, looking up sharply from her diagnostic screen. "The original Genesis research laboratory that went dark five years ago?"

"Yes! The offshore director still had active telemetry links to the underground data vault... we were just relaying the structural integrity pings from the seawall!"

"Tie his hands behind his back and secure the other three technicians in the utility lockup," Fin told Nila.

"Understood, zip-ties locked and secured."

A clean two point four million experience posted to his core, bringing the total past twenty-five million.

"Maya, package the transmitter and the hydrographic soundings."

"Data drives and telemetry charts secured, Fin... every cracked seam on the southern seawall is documented."

Two hours later, the tactical map room of regional coastal command smelled of stale coffee and damp canvas uniforms.

Colonel Mercer leaned over the large nautical chart table, his scarred hands tracing the red grease-pencil marks Fin had drawn across the seawall revetment.

"You are telling me the foundation wall at sector Alpha is already cracked thirty feet below the tide line?"

"Thirty feet deep, eight inches wide, verified by physical inspection and acoustic hydrophones, Colonel."

"And Genesis had a surveillance post monitoring the crack?"

"Here is their receiver," Maya said, setting the captured polymer transmitter on the chart with a solid clunk. "And here are their encrypted frequency logs."

"They were relaying data straight into Facility Zero’s backup archives," Ruby added, crossing her arms over her chest.

Colonel Mercer’s weathered face hardened as he looked at Ruby, recognizing the veteran hunter.

"Halden... I heard you were running with an irregular outfit out of District Four."

"We are not irregulars anymore, Colonel... we hold municipal logistics commissions and an official Coastal Marshal charter."

"Good, because the city regular defense battalions are stretched thinner than dry parchment."

"What do you need to hold the line, Marshal Fin?"

"I don’t need city-wide command, and I don’t need empty promises," Fin stated plainly. "I need sector Alpha designated as a bounded Coastal Marshal responsibility."

"And your artillery support?"

"I need your three eight-inch coastal howitzers dialed into the pre-registered coordinates on grid four-two, with six hundred high-explosive shells allocated strictly to our sector."

"Six hundred shells is half my ready reserve, son."

"Six hundred shells is what it takes to break the armor of an abyssal colossus before it touches that cracked wall," Fin answered, meeting his gaze without flinching. "If the wall breaks, your battery will be underwater in twenty minutes anyway."

Colonel Mercer stared at the chart, then let out a slow, gravelly chuckle.

"You have a very persuasive way with disaster scenarios, Marshal."

Colonel Mercer pulled a heavy brass seal from his pocket, pressing it into the blue wax at the bottom of the operational deployment order.

"Sector Alpha is yours, Coastal Marshal... bounded between jetty three and the old lighthouse."

"We will hold the beach, Colonel."

"Make sure you do, son... because if that cracked wall goes down, the entire harbor goes with it."

"What about communications wire between our command post and your howitzer battery?" Ruby asked.

"My signal corps will lay a double-armored copper cable along the seawall revetment tomorrow morning," Mercer assured her. "Direct field telephone, zero wireless delay."

"And the ammunition replenishment rate?"

"Forty shells per hour hauled by steam tractor from the central arsenal."

"That is workable," Fin said, rolling up his copy of the nautical chart. "We have the operator from Fort Mercer locked in our holding van outside... Maya wants to cross-examine him on Facility Zero."

"Take all the time you need with him," Colonel Mercer said with a dark scowl. "If Genesis helped weaken that seawall, they are guilty of high treason against the realm."

"We will find out what he knows before the midnight tide."

Fin stepped out into the damp courtyard of the coastal command garrison, the salt wind whipping the wool of his jacket against his ribs.

The artillery was pledged, the beach was theirs to defend, and the truth behind Facility Zero was finally within their grasp.
