Chapter 71: The Reaper Arrives
Chapter 71: The Reaper Arrives
The subterranean corridor below the Pine Street noodle shop vibrated with the screech of tearing iron and the sharp, chemical stench of scorched ozone.
Fin hit the bottom of the iron service stairs at full sprint, his boots skidding across the wet concrete floor as he drew his weapons.
"Ruby! Report!" Fin yelled down the corridor.
"Holding!" Ruby’s voice echoed back, strained and breathless. "Inner bulkhead is dented, but the frame is holding!"
Twenty paces down the drainage junction, the heavy steel crossbar that secured the sewer hatch lay twisted and sheared into jagged halves.
A towering silhouette stood in the center of the utility corridor, draped in tattered ballistic fabric and reinforced carbon plating.
Its left arm was grafted into a massive, three-foot titanium cleaver that hissed with pressurized hydraulic fluid, while its right claw twitched with erratic purple sparks.
"Target is Subject Three!" Maya shouted from the communications alcove behind the reinforced inner door. "Look out for its spatial flicker!"
"I’ve got the shield planted!" Ruby shouted back, bracing both shoulders against the steel back of her kite shield. "Nila, circle left!"
"On it!" Nila called out, her rapier flashing like a silver needle through the red emergency light.
Nila lunged with textbook academy precision, the needle point of her foil driving cleanly into an exposed hydraulic hose on the creature’s left knee.
Black synthetic fluid sprayed across the concrete, Subject Three screeching with a deafening metallic shriek as its knee buckled.
"Watch the cleaver-!" Ruby warned, throwing her shield forward.
The titanium cleaver smashed against the shield boss with an ear-splitting clang, the concussive impact driving Ruby’s boots three inches backward through the dust.
"Fin, now!" Ruby grunted through clenched teeth. "Its left flank is open!"
’Stamina is at sixty... enough for one final twelve-second burst.’
[ Active skill: Overclock initiated ]
[ Stamina: 60 → 20/100 ]
[ Agility: 97 → 291 (temporary surge) ]
The subterranean battle instantly froze into complete stillness, the black fluid spraying from the severed knee hose hanging motionless in mid-air.
Fin exploded forward with two hundred and ninety-one Agility, crossing fifteen meters of concrete in a fraction of a heartbeat.
The prototype attempted to activate its spatial flicker, erratic purple sparks crackling across its right shoulder, but the damaged knee threw its balance off alignment.
’Phase alignment failed... it’s stuck in real space.’
Fin ducked beneath the static curve of the titanium cleaver, driving his steel hatchet upward with seventy-seven points of Rank D Plus Strength.
The reverse spike bit straight through the reinforced carbon breastplate, puncturing the pressurized hydraulic manifold that powered the monster’s chest.
"Agh-!" the creature wheezed, a spray of dark coolant erupting as its bladed left arm dropped completely limp.
"Hold it down!" Fin commanded, shouting into the frozen air.
The twelve-second timer ticked down to zero, real-time speed crashing back over Fin’s senses with the weight of an iron hammer.
[ Overclock disengaged ]
[ Stamina gauge: 20/100 (strenuous physical exertion) ]
Ruby surged forward with an explosive yell, driving the steel point of her Vega-6 spear directly into the creature’s damaged left knee.
"Pin it!" Ruby shouted, leaning her entire weight onto the spear shaft to anchor the prototype to the floor grating.
Subject Three lashed out with its right claw, the razor-sharp synthetic talons whistling three inches from Fin’s neck.
Fin twisted his torso inside the arc, drawing his blackened dagger with his left hand.
"Die," Fin whispered.
He drove the blackened dagger straight into the neural junction at the base of the creature’s neck, twisting the blade to sever the corporate receiver.
A final, shuddering tremor ripped through the prototype’s body, the purple sparks across its right arm sputtering and dying in a cloud of grey smoke.
The beast collapsed heavily onto its side, its titanium cleaver clattering against the iron drainage grating with a dull, final thud.
Fin leaned against the curved tunnel wall, his chest heaving as his fatigued muscles absorbed the metabolic toll of forty points of stamina drain.
"Fin?" Ruby asked, keeping her spear tip pressed into the carcass. "Are you in one piece?"
"I’m whole," Fin breathed, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his sleeve.
"How much do you have left in the tank?"
"Running on fumes," Fin said. "Down to the marrow, but holding."
"That was too close," Nila muttered, sheathing her rapier with an immaculate flick of her wrist. "If its knee hadn’t buckled, that cleaver would have taken my arm off."
"Good thrust, Nila," Ruby nodded approvingly. "You hit the exact hydraulic line we needed."
"Academy textbook Chapter four," Nila managed a faint, tired smile. "Always puncture the secondary actuator."
The inner bulkhead door slid open on greased rollers, Maya hurrying out with a portable bio-containment scanner held ready.
"Nobody touch the carcass yet," Maya ordered, waving a purple ultraviolet diagnostic beam over the fallen chassis.
"Is it carrying self-destruct charges?" Ruby asked, stepping back a pace.
"Scanning now..." Maya murmured, watching the data stream. "Checking for neurotoxins, viral backfire payloads, and secondary incendiaries."
The scanner issued a clean, high-pitched confirmation chirp.
"Diagnostic clean," Maya announced, exhaling a long breath. "Zero biological payloads, zero explosive fail-safes. The core is completely stable."
Fin walked over, kneeling beside the fallen prototype and placing his bare palm against the warm, exposed core housing.
The golden interface of the Infinite Absorption System ignited across his retinas, displaying a crisp, translucent harvest menu.
[ Eligible source verified: Subject Three (Type: Bio-mechanical Chimera Prototype) ]
[ Category harvest options available: Physical attribute fragment OR Spatial resonance matrix ]
[ Select harvest category ]
’Attribute fragments or spatial resonance...’
’Attributes can be earned through training, milestones, and digestion compounding... but a spatial mobility skill changes every tactical engagement.’
"Fin?" Ruby asked, watching the golden reflection flickering in his eyes. "What does the interface show?"
"A choice," Fin said quietly. "Raw stats... or its spatial flicker ability."
"Take the flicker," Maya urged immediately. "Tactical mobility is the rarest asset in close-quarters combat."
"Selecting spatial resonance," Fin confirmed.
[ Harvest selection confirmed: Spatial resonance matrix selected ]
[ Energy absorption initiated: source matter depleting ]
The dense muscle weaves and synthetic carbon fibers beneath Fin’s palm turned translucent, dissolving into fine crystalline dust that drifted into the air.
The prototype’s entire upper torso caved inward as its spatial energy was drawn cleanly into Fin’s core, vanishing into thin air.
A sharp, electric tingling sensation pulsed down Fin’s spine into his heels and ankles, settling into his mana channels with crisp definition.
[ Absorption completed: source carcass fully depleted ]
[ New active ability acquired: Spatial Warp Slip L1 ]
[ Skill parameters: maximum range 8 meters, requires visible unoccupied destination, mana cost 10, cooldown 30 seconds, passengers: zero ]
[ Hostile prototype liquidated: Subject Three neutralized ]
[ Event milestone completed: subterranean breach repelled ]
[ EXP reward: +330,000 EXP ]
[ Current EXP: 1,435,700 / 2,500,000 ]
[ Attributes: Strength 77 | Agility 97 (Overclock: 291) | Endurance 89 | Sense 54 | Pulse 10 ]
Fin stood upright, rotating his ankles and feeling the newly established spatial resonance humming alongside his internal mana reservoir.
"Did it take?" Ruby asked.
"A short-range spatial slip," Fin said, testing his footing against the concrete. "Can cover about eight meters across open ground, but needs half a minute to reset between steps."
"An eight-meter blink?" Nila drew in a sharp breath of disbelief. "That’s an A-rank vanguard technique-!"
"It has strict limits," Fin said, keeping his voice grounded. "Can’t phase through solid bulkheads, can’t carry anyone with me, and burns internal energy fast."
"Still," Ruby said with a low whistle. "Eight meters is the difference between life and death on an open battlefield."
The inner bulkhead door clicked again, Jolly stepping through into the corridor carrying an insulated thermos and four ceramic cups.
"Jolly," Fin said, his tone softening. "You shouldn’t be out here."
"The alarms stopped ringing," Jolly replied simply, pouring steaming ginger tea into a cup and handing it to him. "And Sefu said the monster was dead."
"The monster is dead," Fin confirmed, taking the hot cup and sipping the sweet, spicy tea.
"Did they hurt you?" Jolly asked, looking at the scuffs on his knees and the soot on his jacket.
"Not a scratch," Fin answered, reaching out to ruffle her hair gently. "You did great keeping the kids quiet, Jolly."
"They were scared when the ceiling shook," Jolly admitted quietly. "So I made them count persimmon slices until the noise went away."
"Smart girl," Ruby smiled, accepting a cup of tea from her. "Thank you, Jolly."
"Bram is still holding that contractor commander out in the van," Maya reminded them, checking her communications feed.
"Did you pull any telemetry from the prototype’s neural node?" Fin asked, looking at Maya.
"A partial routing cache," Maya said, tapping her screen. "The signal was pinging a repeater tower mounted on an offshore buoy forty miles south."
"An offshore platform?" Ruby asked.
"Looks like maritime coordinates," Maya confirmed. "Not an onshore lab. Whatever factory built this beast is out on open water."
"That matches the shipping routes on Malan’s invoice," Fin noted.
"You think the captive commander has the decryption keys?" Nila asked, crossing her arms.
"He was carrying an encrypted command deck in his vest," Fin said. "If we put the screws to him, he’ll give up the access passphrase."
"What if he stonewalls?" Ruby asked.
"He won’t," Fin replied coldly. "His squad is dead, his prototype is dissolved into dust, and his corporate sponsors abandoned him the second the sirens started."
"I’ll bring my truth serum vials from the medical kit," Maya offered.
"Save the chemicals," Fin said. "A man who thinks he’s been left behind to take the fall will talk for free."
"Let’s go upstairs and see what he has to say," Ruby agreed, resting her spear across her shoulder.
"Jolly, lock this bulkhead behind us," Fin instructed, turning back to his sister.
"Already have the deadbolt in my hand, Fin," Jolly replied with a determined nod. "Don’t let the tea get cold."
"We’ll be quick," Fin smiled.
"And before sunrise," Fin added, looking at his crew. "We’re going to find out exactly where Genesis is hiding."
