SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System

Chapter 64: Thunder In Sand

Chapter 64: Thunder In Sand

The morning bell chimed three distinct notes across the concrete concourse, signaling the opening of the arena staging corridors.

Fin sat on the edge of the wooden bench in locker room three, methodically rolling his left wrist against the chill of a damp linen compress.

"How does the tendon feel?" Ruby asked, leaning her spear against the wall.

"Tight."

"Tight like a cramp, or tight like torn fiber?"

"Just stiff," Fin said, flexing his fingers into a fist before relaxing them. "The compress took down the heat before sunrise."

"The medical examiner cleared you for four full rounds," Ruby said, tightening her leather harness with a sharp tug. "Provided you don’t take another kinetic hammer straight on the joint."

"I don’t plan on catching weapons with my wrist."

"You didn’t plan on catching Torren’s swing either, yet there you were."

’Torren was brute leverage... but Pyre fights with syndicate gold and borrowed patron fire.’

Maya walked in from the corridor, holding her glowing tactical pad.

"Official roster is live," Maya announced.

"Read it," Fin said.

"Ruan is on point with his crimson broadsword," Maya said, flicking the display so both could see the green vectors. "Backed by two sponsored heavy assault reserves named Dale and Kenneth."

"What about Gage?" Ruby asked.

"Gage is listed strictly as off-ring liaison," Maya answered. "Tournament regulations bar him from stepping past the chalk."

"Good," Ruby muttered. "One less snake on the sand."

"Don’t discount the reserves," Maya warned, highlighting Dale’s profile. "Dale swings an iron cudgel weighted with a lead core. Kenneth carries a six-foot halberd with a hooked beard."

"They’ll form a wedge," Fin said.

"Classic textbook escort," Ruby agreed. "Ruan leads the tip to draw attention, the wings collapse inward, and Kenneth hooks the shield."

"Then we don’t let them close the wedge."

"Easier said than done on eighty meters of loose sand, Fin."

"We make Ruan overextend," Fin replied, picking up his hatchet. "He has an audience to impress and corporate sponsors watching from the mezzanine."

’A sponsored prodigy can never resist showing off for the cameras.’

"He’ll try to show off," Maya agreed. "His syndicate contract pays double for broadcast knockouts."

"Then his contract is going to get expensive," Fin said.

The heavy locker door banged open, letting in a swirl of corridor dust and the smell of roasted street snacks.

Bram walked in carrying two steaming insulated flasks, his grey canvas jacket dusted with sugar from the concession stands.

"Bram," Ruby sighed. "Tell me you didn’t bring fried pastries into a staging locker."

"Not for you two," Bram grinned, setting the flasks on the bench. "Jolly packed these before dawn. Salted marrow broth with roasted barley."

"Is she in the stands?" Fin asked.

"Row four, right behind the emergency rail," Bram said. "Sefu and Corin are on either side of her. Nobody gets within three paces."

"Good."

"She told me to give you a message, Fin."

"What did she say?"

"Drink every drop of the broth," Bram said, mimicking Jolly’s stern tone. "And stop letting people hit your left arm."

"Smart girl," Ruby muttered with a quiet laugh.

"She knows how much medical balm costs per ounce," Fin said, taking one flask and drinking the hot, salted broth in three long swallows. "Tell her the broth is gone, Bram."

"Will do," Bram nodded, turning toward the doorway. "Give them hell out there."

The intercom on the concrete ceiling sputtered with static before the proctor’s synthesized voice echoed through the bay.

"Championship final: Halden House versus Team Pyre. Staging gate one in three minutes."

"That’s us," Maya said, shutting down the projector.

"Remember the briefing rules," Ruby said, lifting her heavy kite shield. "The chief referee was specific about boundary calls."

"Individual foul means immediate ejection," Fin recited. "No substitutions allowed from the dugout."

"And the perimeter?" Maya asked, looking at Fin.

"Simultaneous exit terminates the active bout," Fin said. "If both fighters go over the chalk together, the proctor scores an automatic draw."

’Keep that draw rule in reserve... if corporate telemetry sensors start reading too deep.’

They stepped into the dimly lit runway, their boots crunching against loose grit as the iron staging gate ground upward on heavy chains.

Eighty thousand voices thundered through the arena dome, shaking the concrete walls with a continuous, deafening vibration.

Fine yellow sand covered the eighty-meter combat circle, surrounded by the pale blue shimmer of the perimeter kinetic barrier.

Ruan stood forty paces away at the northern marker, his gilded bronze armor polished to a blinding shine under the overhead stadium lamps.

"Look at him," Ruby muttered under her breath. "Preening like a festival rooster."

"Let him preen," Fin said, keeping his eyes on Kenneth’s halberd. "Check Dale’s stance."

"He’s favoring his right hip," Ruby observed. "Lead cudgel is heavy."

"We isolate Kenneth first," Fin instructed. "Once Kenneth’s halberd is tangled, Dale has no angle to swing."

Up in the VIP balcony, Captain Gage leaned over the polished railing, watching through cold, unblinking eyes with an unlit cigar between his teeth.

The chief referee stepped between the two teams, his white baton held high toward the overhead broadcast drones.

"Contenders take your marks!" the referee bellowed.

"Shield high," Fin muttered.

"Always."

"Final match... begin!"

Ruan lunged forward with explosive acceleration, his crimson broadsword igniting with a sharp, violent hiss of white flame.

"Scavenger trash!" Ruan roared, closing twenty meters in two long, leaping strides. "You die on live broadcast!"

"Hold the line!" Ruby called out, planting the lower rim of her kite shield deep into the yellow sand.

The crimson blade crashed against the steel shield face with an ear-splitting clang, spraying molten sparks across Ruby’s boots.

"Push-!" Ruby grunted, absorbing the shock.

Fin dropped low beneath the spray, driving the blunt poll of his hatchet hard into Ruan’s armored knee.

"Agh-!" Ruan snarled, his balance faltering as the knee buckled outward. "Get off me-!"

Kenneth’s halberd swept through the air from the left flank, the hooked blade whistling inches from Fin’s shoulder.

"Dale, flank them!" Kenneth shouted. "Box the spear!"

"I have her!" Dale bellowed, swinging his lead-weighted iron cudgel toward Ruby’s shoulder.

"Not today!" Ruby shouted, pivoting on her heel and catching the cudgel on the angled rim of her shield.

The heavy momentum plowed into the dirt, leaving Dale exposed for half a heartbeat.

"Back up!" Kenneth yelled to Ruan. "Reset the wedge-!"

"No!" Ruan screamed, his face twisting into ugly, desperate rage as he backed toward the perimeter. "I’m not losing to these gutter rats!"

"Fin, look at his hand!" Ruby shouted. "He’s pulling an unlicensed seal-!"

"Ruan, don’t do it!" Dale yelled from behind him. "That’s an automatic foul-!"

"Shut up!" Ruan shrieked, crushing the blackened brass cylinder in his gauntlet. "Burn to ash!"

The talisman shattered with a deafening, thunderous crack, unleashing an uncontrolled vortex of compressed divine flame across the northern sand.

The heat slammed forward like a physical wall, scorching the air and turning the loose sand into glowing, liquid glass.

Ruby threw her entire body weight into her shield, bracing with both arms against the searing shockwave.

"Fin-! The barrier!" Ruby shouted over the roar of the inferno.

The deflected wall of flame roared outward, slamming directly into the blue kinetic barrier along the perimeter wall.

High on the concrete retaining wall, an auxiliary mounting seal groaned under the thermal pressure, spitting bright white electrical arcs into the sand.

’The mounting bracket is failing... three seconds before the containment grid collapses into the lower spectator rows.’

’Twelve seconds.’

[ Active skill: Overclock initiated ]

[ Stamina: 100 → 60/100 ]

[ Agility: 84 → 252 (temporary surge) ]

The roaring inferno froze in mid-air, every tongue of flame locking into stationary needles of incandescent light.

Fin exploded across the glassified sand, covering twenty-five meters of open ground in less than a heartbeat.

Dale attempted to swing his cudgel into Fin’s path, his armored arm moving with the slow, agonizing drag of cold molasses.

Fin ducked cleanly beneath the static iron head, planting his left boot against Dale’s thigh and launching himself toward the flickering pylon.

The steel hatchet blurred through the air, its reverse spike striking the overheated bronze bracket of the mounting seal with pinpoint precision.

The bronze sheared in two with a sharp crack, severing the overloaded conduit before the secondary charge could ignite.

The blinding lightning grounded harmlessly into the drainage pipes, the containment barrier flickering once before stabilizing into a steady blue hum.

Fin landed lightly on both boots near the outer perimeter, rolling his left shoulder as the twelve-second timer expired.

[ Overclock disengaged ]

[ Stamina gauge: 60/100 ]

A deep, golden pulse ignited in the center of Fin’s chest, radiating outward through his bone marrow like molten bronze.

The surge settled into his tendons, increasing his physical density without cooling the second-degree burn throbbing across his left forearm.

’Rank D Plus... but the stamina stays at sixty.’

A dozen armored league enforcers leaped over the railing with shock staves drawn, surrounding Ruan where he knelt in the charred sand.

The chief referee stood over the melted brass casing, his face dark with fury as he pointed his baton at Ruan’s chest.

"Fighter Ruan deployed an uncertified Class-Three incendiary relic within a public sporting venue!" the referee’s voice echoed through the loudspeakers.

"Under Article Nine of the League Charter, fighter Ruan is disqualified from this match and remanded to municipal security!"

"Let go of me!" Ruan screamed, thrashing wildly as two enforcers clamped mana-suppression cuffs around his wrists. "Gage! Tell them-!"

Up in the balcony, Captain Gage turned his back without a word, disappearing into the private lounge as the door slid shut.

"Coward!" Ruan shrieked as they dragged him down the concrete runway. "You promised me a contract-! You promised me-!"

"Quiet, prisoner," the enforcer barked, shoving him through the security gate.

The referee turned back toward the sand, holding his hand high toward the remaining fighters.

"Team Pyre retains two active combatants," the referee announced. "The championship match will resume upon perimeter reset!"

Dale and Kenneth backed toward the northern corner, their faces pale beneath their open visors as they gripped their weapons.

Ruby walked over to Fin’s side, her breathing heavy as she planted her spear into the sand.

"You took the heat on your left arm," Ruby said quietly, looking at his scorched jacket.

"Just blistered fabric."

"Does the joint hold?"

"Yes," Fin said, rotating the wrist. "Firm."

"How are you breathing?"

"Got more than half a tank left," Fin said. "Plenty for these two."

"They’re terrified now," Ruby noted, nodding toward Dale’s trembling hands. "Ruan was their anchor... without him, they don’t have a plan."

"Terrified fighters swing wildly," Fin replied. "We stay disciplined, let them make the mistakes, and close this out."

"On your lead, captain," Ruby said, raising her shield.

The crowd erupted into an earth-shattering roar as the referee raised his baton for the restart.
