SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System

Chapter 16: Teeth In Rain

Chapter 16: Teeth In Rain

A week of porter shifts passed before the power station siren interrupted another night.

Fin spent those shifts reclaiming abandoned cores within his daily limit, favoring utility traits over raw attributes.

Repeated traits filled his harvest record without granting their full value twice.

The emergency siren began to wail, sending him toward the bedroom window.

Fin sat up in the dark, checking the red emergency broadcast scrolling on the distant holo-billboards.

[ Civil defense alert: triple gate surge detected - sectors 4, 5, and 7 ]

[ Response teams deployed - citizens seek shelter immediately ]

The official response squads would concentrate their forces in the wealthy commercial districts first, leaving the lower sectors to burn.

He survived five surge nights in nineteen years, and the Association cavalry never arrived on time.

A second notification flashed directly across his internal interface, pulsing in sharp amber.

[ Warning: high-velocity spatial entity inbound ]

[ Target: named Shadow Stalker (rank E+) ]

[ Vector: halden street municipal evacuation route ]

He grabbed his black hooded windbreaker from the hook, pulling the zipper up to his chin.

He checked Jolly’s bedroom door, making sure the lock was fastened securely from the inside.

He stepped out onto the fire escape, pulling his hood over his eyes before vaulting onto the roof.

The wind whipped his face as he accelerated into a sprint across the gravel.

He leaped across the four-meter alley gap, landing softly on the neighboring roof before bounding over a row of solar panels.

Through the darkness, his enhanced Sense stat painted the thermal footprint of a giant quadruped predator.

The Shadow Stalker was three meters long, covered in sleek black fur that swallowed the light.

It moved along the rooftops fifty meters ahead, bounding between chimneys with predatory silence.

Its path led directly toward the Halden Street community center, where two hundred schoolchildren were sheltering from the surge.

"Not tonight," he whispered into the wind, kicking off a brick parapet to close the distance.

He leaped across a six-meter chasm between two tenement buildings, grabbing the ladder of a billboard.

He swung around the frame, using the momentum to vault thirty meters onto the roof of an abandoned theater.

He drew two cheap kitchen knives from his belt, holding the blades in a reverse grip.

The wolf sensed his pursuit, skidding to a halt on the roof, its claws gouging deep furrows in the surface.

It spun around, its four yellow eyes locking onto the hooded human leaping through the shadows.

"Kkrrr-graaa!" The beast snarled, its jaw splitting open to reveal three rows of jagged teeth.

The Shadow Stalker lunged forward in a black blur, its front claws slashing toward his throat.

He didn’t retreat, trusting his passive [ Frost Skin ] as he met the beast in midair.

The razor claws tore through his windbreaker, shrieking against his frost-hardened skin like nails on slate.

The impact bruised his collarbone, but the strike failed to draw a single drop of blood.

He wrapped his left arm around the monster’s snout, driving his right knife straight through its left eye.

"Auuugh!" The wolf howled in agony, thrashing as both bodies crashed through the theater skylight.

They plunged twelve meters through the darkness, smashing through stage scaffolding before crashing onto the floor.

Plaster dust and splintered timber exploded into the air, obscuring the stage in a thick gray fog.

The wounded beast scrambled onto its paws, snapping its jaws wildly as black blood sprayed from its bleeding eye.

He rolled to his feet in the wreckage, his muscles burning from the kinetic shock of the fall.

The beast lunged with its remaining strength, snapping its jaws inches from his shoulder.

He sidestepped the desperate claw sweep, sliding beneath the beast’s chest with fluid precision.

He feinted left, drawing the forepaw aside before ducking beneath the counterstroke and driving his elbow into the exposed ribs.

The bone cracked beneath the blow, forcing a pained yelp from the creature’s throat.

He gripped the second knife with both hands, driving it between the monster’s ribs and into its heart.

The Shadow Stalker convulsed, its yellow eyes dimming as the black fur dissolved into gray vapor.

The giant predator collapsed onto its side, its final breath escaping in a long, rattling hiss.

[ Named monster slain: Shadow Stalker (rank E+) ]

[ EXP reward: +5,000 EXP ]

[ EXP: 10,700 / 50,500 ]

He dropped to one knee beside the carcass, gasping for breath as rain poured through the shattered skylight above.

He placed his bloodstained palm flat against the wolf’s skull, letting the system drink the core.

’Take the sensory trait,’ he commanded internally, feeling his neural pathways expand.

[ Absorbed: sense +6 ]

[ Sense stat: 25 → 31 ]

’Bonus Surprise and First Blood supplied those early points. Sense started this fight at twenty-five.’

’The wolf just shoved it to thirty-one.’

A spherical pulse of sensory clarity expanded fifty meters around his body in every direction.

Raindrops struck the roof while sirens carried from the highway beyond the theater. Across the street, the shelter residents’ heartbeats crowded his hearing until he concentrated on separating them.

Every whisper in the alley below, every rustle of trash, registered with crisp definition in his mind.

The monster’s corpse withered into ash, leaving one knife snapped at the hilt and the other bent past saving.

He left both blades in the gray pile, wiping the black ichor onto his jeans before climbing the broken scaffolding.

He leaped through the shattered skylight, landing on the roof in the dark.

Across the street, three civilian volunteers stood near the shelter doors, staring up at the roof with wide eyes.

The crowd heard the Named wolf’s roar, then the crash inside the theater. Now they watched the hooded survivor standing beside the fallen beast.

"Look up there," one volunteer whispered in awe, pointing a flashlight beam at the rooftop. "The Ghost of Halden Street..."

"He killed that thing alone," another volunteer gasped, shining the light on the broken skylight. "Who is that guy?"

He pulled his hood lower over his brow, vanishing into the shadows before the light could reach his face.

He bounded across three residential rooftops, slipping through the fire escape window into his bedroom.

He took off his torn windbreaker, tossing the fabric into the laundry basket beside the sink.

He poured a cup of warm water from the kettle, drinking slowly while the wind rattled the window pane.

He checked his reflection in the small bathroom mirror, running a hand through his hair.

His eyes held a new sharpness, reflecting the predatory senses he absorbed from the shadow wolf.

He dried his hair with a clean towel, listening to the emergency siren finally winding down in the distance.

He washed the ichor off his hands in the sink, because the kitchen knives were already trash in the theater ash.

He left the nightstand drawer empty, keeping the weapons within storage. Cheap blades that folded on a Named heart weren’t worth carrying home.

He checked the latch on the window one last time, ensuring no draft leaked into the room.

He lay on his mattress, closing his eyes while his senses followed his sister’s breathing from the next room. His core thrummed with ten thousand experience points, steady and calm.

Outside, the district settled into silence, unaware that their neighborhood protector was already asleep under an old blanket.
