Chapter 204 The World’s Flaw [2]
The Golden Fish.
He still hadn’t understood how such an overwhelmingly powerful beast could remain in this realm, given the clear disparity in strength between it and everything else on Lunaris Island. All realms had level restrictions. But the Golden Fish transcended those restrictions so completely that its presence here made no logical sense.
Moon had grown significantly stronger recently. He’d killed S-rank beasts and survived encounters that would have killed most awakeners at his level.
But compared to the Golden Fish?
He was still just a toad at the bottom of a well, thinking the small circle of sky above constituted the entire world.
Moon suspected it might be as strong as the most powerful Surpassers—those legendary awakeners who’d reached the top of the second sanctuary, on the verge of entering the third one. Or possibly even stronger than that.
Which raised questions about the Benefactor who apparently kept such a creature as a companion.
What kind of person could command a beast of that magnitude? What level of power would that require? And why would someone of that caliber spend time helping a small tribe of Savi survive on an isolated island? Who could have possibly hurt the benefactor enough to lead him into retreat in this realm?
“Moon?” Selene’s voice pulled him from his thoughts. “You’re doing that thing where you stare at nothing while thinking too hard. What’s on your mind?”
Moon blinked, refocusing on the present. “Just considering about the person that built this place. And why.”
“The Benefactor?” Yara asked, her tone carrying both hope and uncertainty.
“Most likely,” Moon confirmed. “A pavilion in an isolated realm, containing some kind of inheritance… it fits the pattern of someone leaving behind a legacy for those they deem worthy.”
He studied the carved doors more carefully, looking for any inscriptions or symbols that might provide additional clues. But the stone was smooth, unmarked by time.
“Whatever the purpose,” Selene said, moving to stand beside him, “we’re here now. And we have what the notification said we needed—the two spirits.”
Moon nodded, pulling both cores from his storage ring. The Magma King’s red-orange glow and the Druid Spirit’s vibrant green light sat in his hands, responding to proximity to each other or perhaps to the pavilion itself.
“Then let’s find out if we’re worthy,” he said quietly.
—
“Then let’s find out if we’re worthy,” he said quietly.
—
Together, the three of them—Moon, Selene, and Yara—approached the ancient doors alongside Mirage.
Moon lifted his hand, intending to push against the cool stone surface. But before his palm could make contact—
Psh-hh!
The doors began opening by themselves, moving inward with a soft grinding sound.
All three of them stepped back slightly, surprised by the autonomous response.
Selene’s eyes immediately began tracing the door frame, “There are runes inscribed here too… interesting. I didn’t notice them at all—The benefactor must have had powerful runes with him.”
Moon’s attention settled on the small opening that was steadily widening, revealing what lay beyond.
Or rather, revealing nothing.
The pavilion’s interior was completely dark, not shadowed or dim, but utterly, absolutely black. As if even the bright sunlight streaming down from above couldn’t penetrate past the threshold. The darkness was so complete it looked almost solid, like a wall of obsidian blocking their view.
A frown settled on Yara’s face, her vision apparently useless against whatever prevented them from perceiving the interior. Her eyes squinted as she tried to pierce the darkness, “What is this place? How can it be so dark when the doors are wide open?”
“It must be some sort of runic barrier,” Selene spoke quietly, still studying the door-frame. “One that doesn’t allow perception of the inside without actually entering. A privacy measure, or possibly a security feature.”
Moon’s curiosity was piqued. Without waiting for further discussion, he stepped forward and began walking inside.
The moment his body fully crossed the threshold, the darkness lifted from his vision like a veil being pulled away.
He could see.
The interior was… empty. A large circular chamber with white stone walls matching the exterior. No furniture. No decorations. Just open space and—
Meanwhile, outside the pavilion, Yara and Selene had moved to follow Moon inside.
And stopped.
Both of them hit something invisible, an unseen barrier that prevented them from crossing the threshold no matter how hard they pushed. It felt solid, unyielding, like trying to walk through a wall of glass.
Worse, Moon had simply… vanished. One moment he’d been visible entering the darkness, the next he’d disappeared entirely, swallowed by the black void.
Panic flickered across both their faces.
“Moon!” they shouted simultaneously, worried.
No response.
Inside, Moon heard nothing.
It didn’t take him long to realize his companions hadn’t followed. He turned around to look at the entrance—still visible from his perspective—and could see Yara and Selene standing just outside. Their faces were twisted with concern, their mouths moving as if shouting.
But he couldn’t hear a single word.
A frown formed on Moon’s face. Sound barrier as well as a physical one, apparently.
He walked back toward the entrance, stepping through the threshold—
And immediately the barrier released him, allowing him to exit back into the sunlight.
“What are you doing?” he asked, confused by their distressed expressions. “Come inside.”
Both Selene and Yara visibly relaxed seeing him emerge from the darkness unharmed.
“We can’t, there’s an invisible barrier stopping us from entering with you. Some kind of restriction rune. We couldn’t see you after you entered either, you just disappeared into that darkness.” Selene explained.
Moon’s frown deepened. “A selective barrier…”
“Maybe only one person can enter at a time?” Selene suggested. “Try letting me go in alone.”
Moon stepped aside, gesturing for her to proceed.
Selene approached the entrance and attempted to walk through.
Thud.
She hit the invisible wall, stopped cold despite being the only one attempting entry.
Before she could try again, Moon’s voice stopped her. “Wait. Maybe it’s because of the spirit cores.” He pulled both elemental cores from his storage ring and placed them in Selene’s hands. “Take these too. That might be the condition for entry.”
“That makes sense,” Selene nodded, gripping the Magma King’s red core in one hand and the Druid Spirit’s green core in the other. She took a breath and walked forward again.
