Chapter 42: Praise
Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Praise
After quickly finishing their meal, the group found a shady spot to rest. They didn’t go back to their dorms.
Lying on the thick branches of a large tree, they all closed their eyes, drowsy.
Just as they were about to fall asleep, the sound of a conversation suddenly drifted up from below.
"Is it really okay for us to be doing this?"
a male voice asked, laced with anxiety.
"What’s not okay about it? Let’s just do it and get it over with."
Another voice chimed in, its impatient tone startling the group awake.
"What if we get caught?" the first voice asked, full of fear. "We’ll die."
"Are you a man or not? Why are you so afraid of dying?" the other retorted.
The two went back and forth, but they never got to the point.
The five in the tree were speechless. Feng He raised her hand and gestured to the others.
’What kind of big deal are these two planning?’
Shi Feng gestured back: ’No idea. It involves life and death, so it’s probably nothing good.’
Feng He’s hands flew: ’They keep talking in circles and not getting to the point. It’s driving me crazy.’
"Privately keeping a mutant beast is a capital offense," the timid one said, grabbing the other’s arm and pleading desperately. "You should turn it in."
"If they find out, we’ll both be executed."
Privately keeping a mutant beast...
’Ballsy.’
The five in the tree looked at each other. They thought they were about to overhear a plot about spies or betraying the First Corps, but it was just about hiding a mutant beast!
No wonder they said they would die if they were discovered.
Humanity and the mutant beasts had long since reached a state of endless war.
To think this guy was actually hiding a mutant beast. Whatever his reason, he would face a terrible fate if caught.
It was no surprise his friend was so terrified.
"That mutant beast was left to me by my mother. I can’t turn it in," the boy said, shaking his head firmly.
"So you want to die, then?!" his friend, who was being driven mad by the stress, demanded.
"No..." The one who had just been accused of being afraid to die was now admitting he didn’t want to.
’Talk about a double standard.’
"Then turn it in!" Although the other boy was timid, he was now fighting for his life. "If you don’t, I’m done with you, and I’ll report you myself!"
"Hou Ming, how could you do this to me?" The boy was stunned, his eyes wide.
"Li Yang, are you trying to drag me down with you to die?" Hou Ming shot back.
At this question, Li Yang hung his head. "No."
But that mutant beast had hatched from an egg his mother had given him before she passed away.
Li Yang didn’t want to turn it in. Besides, the little mutant beast was adorable.
"That was my mother’s..."
Li Yang was cut off before he could finish. Hou Ming pursed his lips and tried to reason with him. "I know it’s the last thing your mother left you, but you have to think about our safety."
Hearing this, Li Yang could only lower his head, his eyes filled with reluctance.
"I get it..."
The five listened to their conversation, finding it all rather boring.
Lin Jingjing lay back down, closed her eyes, and went back to sleep.
Their lunch break was short enough as it was; being disturbed by these two was just annoying.
After reaching an agreement, the two left. Only when their footsteps had faded into the distance did the group on the tree start talking.
"Where would they even hide a mutant beast?" Mo Xuan was the most curious about this.
’They’re both soldiers in the First Corps now. Where could they possibly hide it?’
The others shook their heads. Gu Kaiwen stretched his stiff body and said, "Who cares? Let’s get some sleep."
It was better to keep the secret they’d accidentally overheard to themselves. That way, no one would think they were the ones who snitched and hold a grudge against them later on.
After the lunch break came their long-awaited Mecha practice session.
To their surprise, the instructor for this Mecha class was the same young man from that morning.
On the vast training grounds, a silver Mecha stood in the middle of a platform.
The instructor was dressed in a black combat uniform with a cap on his head.
He held an iron rod, tapping it against the Mecha as he explained its functions and features to everyone.
Most of the recruits were bored. After all, more than half of those sitting on the field had come from military academies.
Their teachers at the academies had already taught them all this.
Learning it all over again here was just tedious.
They’d rather be doing physical training.
But while they were bored, others were like fish in the ocean.
They couldn’t get enough of it.
After finishing his detailed explanation, the instructor noticed that most of the new recruits were about to fall asleep.
Only a small portion were listening attentively and taking notes.
Seeing this, the instructor frowned.
"Instructor Han, come over here for a moment."
The two stood together, conferred for a bit, and then made a decision.
Instructor Han stood on the platform and called up all the recruits who had come from military academies one by one.
Once they were assembled, he led them away for special intensified training.
The rest would continue with the Mecha lesson.
The young instructor looked at the soldiers below, then glanced up at the scorching sun.
He led them straight indoors.
The academy graduates who were being led away watched them go inside, their eyes wide with disbelief.
’They don’t have to stay out in the sun?’
A wave of envy washed over them!
Once inside, the instructor resumed his lesson.
The pens in the hands of our five never stopped moving, and their eyes never left the Mecha on the platform.
Feng He was even more impressive. She took out a large sheet of white paper and, multitasking, began sketching the Mecha’s exterior while listening to the lecture.
Then, she labeled all the parts. She even drew a diagram of the interior and labeled that as well.
Back when she was studying medicine, Feng He could draw out all the organs of the human body in the same way.
The instructor spoke until his throat was dry. The moment he paused, he noticed the five of them blinking up at him.
’Are they really this eager to learn?’
He glanced at the people sitting behind them. Although some looked tired, they were all studying diligently.
"Let’s stop here for now. We’ll take a short break," the instructor said before sitting down.
With him not talking, it was their turn to talk.
The group huddled to one side, whispering amongst themselves.
"This Mecha is so fast, but how much ammunition can it carry?" Shi Feng asked. His background was in weapons research, and he was already considering its payload capacity.
’What happens when it runs out of ammo?’
"I doubt it can carry much," Gu Kaiwen chimed in. "They even equipped this Mecha with a giant blade."
"Pilots of light Mechas need to know martial arts," Feng He said.
Hearing this, the five of them raised their eyebrows. They all knew martial arts!
Shi Feng was still preoccupied, wondering how to increase a speed-type Mecha’s ammunition capacity without sacrificing its velocity.
’Ideally, it should be able to carry more high-yield, heavy-duty munitions.’
"I’m still thinking about how to fit it with heavy bombs," Shi Feng said seriously.
The other four chuckled. His professional instincts were kicking in.
"Well then, you’d better get to researching. When you figure it out, we’ll each take one," Gu Kaiwen said with a laugh, slinging an arm around his shoulder. "You’ve got this, great Shi Feng!"
"You bet!"
The instructor walked over to them and picked up Feng He’s large sheet of paper.
He looked at it carefully and saw that the drawing was excellent.
"Nice drawing," the instructor praised.
