Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Very Funny?
They all shook their heads in unison and said, "We’re not afraid."
Watching them shake their heads in unison and declare they weren’t afraid, He Shian was momentarily stunned.
’Aren’t they afraid of dying?’
He Shian let out a soft chuckle. "So you’re really not afraid to die."
"Sacrifice isn’t scary. What’s scary is being a deserter," Lin Jingjing replied.
The few of them had all grown up in the same military compound, instilled with the ideology of protecting their home and country since childhood.
Now that they knew how to quickly end this war between humans and mutant beasts, they couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
They couldn’t let more people die.
Her father had told her never to be a deserter.
Even though her spiritual power was low-grade, after she joined the First Corps as a military cook, she was a soldier, a warrior.
If they hadn’t come here, Lin Jingjing could have turned a blind eye.
But since they were on this battlefield, they couldn’t stay out of it.
"Fine. Tell me your idea," He Shian said coldly, his gaze fixed on her.
Lin Jingjing walked up to the large screen, then tapped on one of the many video feeds to enlarge it.
She pointed to the white mutant beast behind the rock. "This mutant beast is their leader."
"If we kill it, the other mutant beasts will retreat."
The rock was blocking his view, so He Shian couldn’t see what the white mutant beast looked like.
Sitting in his chair, he frowned slightly, his ice-blue eyes fixed on the large screen. "Are you sure that mutant beast is their leader?"
Lin Jingjing turned to look at Shi Feng beside her. With just a single glance, Shi Feng knew what she wanted.
Shi Feng quickly opened his Star Ring, pulled up the report, and scrolled down to show He Shian the picture.
"This is what it really looks like. It’s pure white, has a sharp beak and a shrewish face, and can walk upright like a person, but its shape is also very bat-like."
"Not only that, it can also unleash a sonic attack with its scream, controlling the entire battlefield," Shi Feng said seriously, pointing at the mutant beast on the screen.
He Shian looked closely and realized this mutant beast was indeed different from the others.
Its crimson eyes seemed to hold a spark of intelligence.
"Hmm," He Shian nodded. He also felt this mutant beast was different. He had been on the field for so long, but this was truly the first time he had seen a mutant beast like this.
’If it’s really as Lin Jingjing says, then we have to eliminate this mutant beast.’
His gaze fell on the screen, on its large, pricked ears and the surrounding mutant beasts, and his brow furrowed even deeper.
"Where is it hiding? How are we supposed to kill it?" He Shian asked.
It was completely surrounded by other mutant beasts protecting it. To kill it, they would have to break through layer after layer of its guards.
"You fly me closer in the Mecha," Lin Jingjing said, pulling the large sniper rifle off her back. "I can kill it."
Seeing her confidence, He Shian sneered, "And what makes you so sure?"
"Yes, I’m sure," Lin Jingjing said seriously.
"Fine." He Shian went along with her. ’I’d like to see what this Grade D trash can accomplish.’
Seeing that he agreed, Lin Jingjing nodded in satisfaction.
She then turned to the other four. "You all will provide cover for me."
"Yes."
Lin Jingjing turned her gaze to Shi Feng. "Shi Feng, you stay here and relay information to us."
"Yes."
After she finished, Lin Jingjing held out her fist and looked at them. "We will succeed."
Seeing Lin Jingjing’s outstretched fist, the others all clenched their own and bumped them against hers.
Then they said in unison, "We will succeed."
Watching them, He Shian snorted.
’A bunch of Grade Ds, shouting about success.’
’Just not dying would be their greatest success.’
He Shian stood up, took five white spheres from his Space Ring, and tossed them into their arms. "Protection Balls. In case of danger, they can form a Shield that can block a mutant beast’s attack."
Holding the Protection Balls, they said to him, "Thank you."
After reloading the sniper rifle, the group left the tent. He Shian got into the Mecha’s cockpit, and Lin Jingjing followed him in.
The remaining four ran ahead to find suitable positions to provide them with the best possible cover.
The Mecha’s cockpit wasn’t very large. It was a single-person Mecha, so it felt very crowded with two people inside.
Lin Jingjing stood to the side, watching the large screen in front of them, her gaze fixed on He Shian’s movements as he operated the Mecha.
Seeing how fluid his controls were, Lin Jingjing couldn’t help but ask.
"Is this Mecha difficult to pilot?"
"Not at all. It’s very simple." As He Shian finished speaking, he was already piloting the Mecha to charge forward.
The sky was the territory of the Red-winged Beasts. The moment they saw a Mecha invading their domain, the Red-winged Beasts all let out piercing cries, even though they were still so far away.
Lin Jingjing still found the sound grating.
She unconsciously raised her hands to cover her ears. That kind of cry made her deeply uncomfortable.
He Shian saw this and asked with a slight chuckle, "Can’t take it?"
"No, it’s just so jarring. It makes me want to pinch its mouth shut," Lin Jingjing replied, shaking her head.
On the ground, the others took out their flatbed hoverboards, stepping onto them and using ropes to firmly secure their feet.
Then, they used the hoverboards to fly at a low altitude, having also activated their Protection Balls.
And just like that, they had created their own small, defensive flying craft.
’These people are pretty quick on their feet,’ He Shian thought, watching them.
They followed behind the Mecha at a steady pace. Whenever a Red-winged Beast got close to the Mecha, the group would aim their guns at it, but they would lower them again after seeing the Mecha successfully evade it.
"Those your friends?" He Shian asked, all while dodging an incoming Red-winged Beast.
"Yes," Lin Jingjing replied.
"To think they’d follow you on a suicide mission. Looks like none of them are afraid to die," He Shian said.
"Everyone dies eventually," Lin Jingjing retorted. "It’s just a matter of choosing how you die."
"Do you die to save B6 Star, or do you die while trying to escape?"
"Between the two, we simply chose the former."
Listening to her grand principles, He Shian chuckled softly. ’Does this world really have people who would selflessly sacrifice their lives just to save a bunch of useless weaklings?’
’If B6 Star really can’t be defended, and all its resources are plundered by the mutant beasts, then the First Corps will have no reason to continue its garrison here. All the weaklings still alive on B6 Star will be abandoned.’
’Their final fate will only be death—killed by mutant beasts, starved to death, beaten to death by others, suicide...’
’And all I can do is lead my soldiers to resist until the very last moment. If the higher-ups order a retreat, then there’s nothing we can do.’
Hearing He Shian’s chuckle, Lin Jingjing frowned at him and asked, "Something funny?"
"It is pretty funny," He Shian shot back. "Five Grade D losers saving a planet. Isn’t that hilarious?"
