Chapter 28: The Position’s Rear Has Been Invaded
Chapter 28: Chapter 28: The Position’s Rear Has Been Invaded
Below were nothing but mutant beasts. Falling meant certain death.
Gu Kaiwen snatched Feng He up, set her aside, and then looked as if he were about to collapse from exhaustion.
’What a test of stamina,’ he thought. ’But at least I pulled it off.’
They all breathed a collective sigh of relief. The immediate danger had passed, but now they had to deal with the situation at hand.
"Shi Feng, see if you can contact Admiral He," Lin Jingjing said into her Star Ring. "Tell him what’s happening here."
Shi Feng stared at the large screen in front of him, momentarily dumbfounded. "This is too Advanced. I don’t know how to use it."
Hearing this, the four people in the tree fell silent.
The five of them were like kids from the countryside visiting the big city for the first time, completely clueless about everything.
’We don’t understand any of this advanced equipment. We’re just a bunch of hicks in the big city.’
When they remained silent, Shi Feng said anxiously, "Guys, say something!"
"What am I supposed to do?"
In the end, it was Lin Jingjing who spoke. She watched the mutant beast that was relentlessly ramming its head against their tree, then raised a hand to scratch her cheek. "I don’t know either..."
After a moment, Lin Jingjing added, "What if we have Captain Li make the call?"
Aside from each other, the only person in their contacts was Captain Li.
Now that the rear had been breached, the death toll would only climb higher if they failed to report it.
"I guess that’s our only option..." Shi Feng said, slumping into the chair and pressing a hand to his forehead.
Shi Feng immediately called Captain Li. The call connected almost instantly.
As soon as it connected, Captain Li’s furious voice thundered through the comms: "What time is it?! Why aren’t you back yet?!"
The group fell silent at his tone, and the pressure on Shi Feng felt immense.
’Captain Li is pissed again,’ he thought.
"We’re... busy with something right now. We can’t head back just yet," Shi Feng explained, before getting to the point. "Captain Li, I need you to contact Admiral He."
"Tell Admiral He the rear defenses have been overrun by a massive number of mutant beasts. Please, ask him to send reinforcements."
At first, Captain Li was completely baffled, but as Shi Feng finished speaking, he shot bolt upright in bed.
"The five of you went to the front line?!" Captain Li demanded, his voice so loud it felt like it would deafen Shi Feng.
"We were just supposed to deliver a meal..." Shi Feng replied meekly. "And... well, we ended up at the front."
"Fuck!" Captain Li swore. ’A bunch of Grade Ds on the front line? It’s a death sentence!’
And what Shi Feng had just said meant the rear defenses were about to collapse.
’Are the five of them going to die out there?’
A wave of regret washed over Captain Li. ’I never should have let them deliver that meal!’
"All of you, find a safe place and stay put," Captain Li said, his voice low and steady now that he’d calmed down. "I’m contacting He Shian right now."
He hung up. Shi Feng let out a sigh of relief.
"It’s handled," Shi Feng quickly told the other four.
The four in the tree breathed a sigh of relief, but a violent CRUNCH from below sent their hearts leaping back into their throats.
’Who knows if this tree can hold out,’ they thought. ’Those things are incredibly strong.’
"This isn’t a viable solution," Mo Xuan said, his voice cold as he frowned at the grotesque mutant beasts below. "It’s going to knock this tree down."
"So we find a new spot?" Lin Jingjing glanced at the nearest tree. It was too far away; a jump was impossible.
Lin Jingjing quickly abandoned the idea. ’Are we supposed to just sit here and wait to die?’
「Meanwhile」
Captain Li placed a video call to He Shian.
He Shian materialized his spiritual power into a rope, using it to strangle a Red-winged Beast to death.
An endless stream of Red-winged Beasts surged forward, and He Shian instantly conjured a massive white net to block their path.
Once they were ensnared, he picked them off one by one with his mecha’s cannons.
Just then, the Star Ring on his wrist began to chime. He glanced down and said in a low voice, "Connect."
A large blue screen materialized beside him, displaying Captain Li’s face.
"What is it, Captain Li?"
"Your rear defenses have been breached by mutant beasts," Captain Li said grimly.
He Shian fell silent, though his ice-blue eyes never left the mecha’s main screen.
His hands flew across the control console as the mecha deftly dodged a Red-winged Beast that charged straight for him.
After evading the attack, He Shian swung his longsword and lopped off the Red-winged Beast’s head.
The sequence of movements was as smooth as flowing water, giving the Red-winged Beast no chance to fight back.
"Who told you?" He Shian asked coldly, not even glancing at Captain Li.
’There are too many of these Red-winged Beasts,’ he thought. ’They’re impossible to wipe out.’
"Lin Jingjing," Captain Li replied.
’Lin Jingjing,’ he recalled. ’The team leader who delivered the meal.’
’The five of them were indeed staying in the tents at the rear.’
"Are you certain?" He Shian finally spared Captain Li a glance, his eyes deadly serious.
Captain Li wasn’t entirely sure himself, but after the past few days he’d spent with them,
he was certain they wouldn’t lie. He looked at He Shian and said with conviction, "I’m certain."
At his words, He Shian’s brow furrowed even deeper. The mutant beasts were attacking with overwhelming force; from the looks of it, they were trying to take B6 Star in a single night.
’And last time, these mutant beasts learned to dig tunnels,’ he thought. ’They’re getting smarter.’
’Better go back and check, just in case.’
"Understood." After hanging up, He Shian immediately transformed his spiritual power into a volley of sharp swords, launching them at the Red-winged Beasts.
The Red-winged Beasts still struggling against the white net were instantly riddled with holes, turning them into sieves.
With the immediate threat dealt with, He Shian piloted his mecha downward, racing back toward the main camp at top speed.
He arrived outside the tent, jumped out of the mecha’s cockpit, and strode directly inside.
He threw open the flap to find only Shi Feng sitting inside.
His expression instantly darkened. ’Where are the other four?’
’Dead?’
"Where are your teammates?" He Shian demanded sharply.
The sudden voice made Shi Feng jump. He turned to find He Shian staring him down with those ice-blue eyes.
"They... They went to help..." Shi Feng stammered.
"For disobeying a direct order, the penalty is twenty strokes of the military rod," He Shian said coldly, walking up to Shi Feng. "All four of your teammates will be punished."
As he spoke, his gaze shifted from Shi Feng to the large screen. His pupils dilated. It was exactly as Captain Li had described.
Countless mutant beasts were swarming in their direction, their forms filling the entire screen.
He Shian rounded on him. "With something this critical happening, why didn’t you contact me directly?!"
Shi Feng flinched at the roar, hunching his shoulders. He Shian’s murderous aura, combined with his current rage, was utterly terrifying.
"I... I don’t have your contact info..." Shi Feng’s voice was barely a whisper.
"Couldn’t you have used the PA system right there?"
’Actually, no, I couldn’t...’
Shi Feng answered in his head.
