Lin Jingjing searched carefully through the horde of mutant beasts, but she couldn’t find any sign of the white one.
There were many Steel Beasts, along with plenty of other mutant beasts she had never seen before.
None of them had walkie-talkies, so for Lin Jingjing to contact them, she had to use her Star Ring to make a group call to the four of them.
Soon, they answered one after another. Lin Jingjing whispered to them, "Has anyone seen that white mutant beast?"
They all replied in unison, "No."
’No one’s found it. Could it be hiding?’
Since no one had seen it, the only option was to have someone go back to the tent and search for it on the main screen.
Lin Jingjing said, "Shi Feng, go back to the tent, find it, and tell me its location."
"Yes, ma’am!" Shi Feng replied, then climbed down from the tree and headed straight for the tent.
Lin Jingjing also felt her current position wasn’t ideal. She got up from the ground, shouldered her heavy sniper rifle, and ran directly for higher ground.
This heavy sniper rifle had a long range, but its power increased the closer the target was.
Lin Jingjing found a relatively high and concealed position. She was just about to set up the rifle.
Just then, the sound of flapping wings and the roar of a Mecha’s thrusters came from overhead.
Lin Jingjing looked up, using the light from the illumination flares, and saw black smoke pouring from the body of a blue Mecha.
Behind it, several mutant beasts were flapping their wings, charging toward the Mecha with crimson eyes and shrill, ear-piercing cries.
Their incredibly sharp claws swiped at the Mecha from time to time. The blue Mecha was on the verge of being scrapped.
Billowing black smoke, the Mecha and the mutant beasts wheeled about right under Lin Jingjing’s nose.
The blue Mecha had no more ammunition to suppress the mutant beasts, and the large blade in its hand had been broken.
It was safe to say that if the pilot inside couldn’t find a way to shake off these mutant beasts, all that awaited him was having the Mecha’s exterior brutally torn open by their sharp claws.
Then, the beasts would open their gaping maws and bite the pilot in half.
For the Mecha’s pilot, there was only one way out: death.
Lin Jingjing could see how it would end. While the two sides were still locked in a chase, she spun around and lay down directly on a rock.
She then raised the heavy sniper rifle, placed the stock on her shoulder, bent one leg to support the rifle on it, and gripped it tightly with both hands to keep it from falling.
Once she was set, Lin Jingjing adjusted her scope and aimed at the head of the mutant beast leading the chase.
But it was flying about at a surprisingly high speed, and Lin Jingjing couldn’t get a clear shot.
She didn’t dare fire recklessly, for fear of hitting a friendly.
"Hah..." Lin Jingjing let out a soft sigh.
The still-open communication channel transmitted her sigh to the others, and they immediately asked.
"Sister Lin, what’s wrong?"
"Did you run into a problem?"
"Is there anything I can do to help?"
Hearing their voices, Lin Jingjing realized the call hadn’t ended.
"It’s nothing. I was trying to save that blue Mecha, but it’s flying all over the place, and the mutant beasts behind it are doing the same. I don’t dare take a shot for fear of hitting it," Lin Jingjing explained.
Upon hearing this, the three of them immediately looked up, and Shi Feng also switched his screen to watch the scene in the sky.
After a careful look, Shi Feng said, "Sister Lin, aim for the ones in the back."
The black smoke pouring from the blue Mecha was growing thicker, and sparks of electricity arced from the places where its armor had been clawed open.
It looked incredibly dangerous, with several mutant beasts still in hot pursuit.
Their crimson eyes were locked onto the blue Mecha.
Their long, sharp claws were already extended; if the blue Mecha weren’t flying fast enough, it would have surely been torn apart.
Only the lead mutant beast was in close pursuit; the ones behind it were still some distance away. Shi Feng immediately said, "The ones in the back aren’t keeping up."
Hearing this, Lin Jingjing shifted her scope to the mutant beasts further back.
They really weren’t as close. Lin Jingjing exhaled a slow breath, then, seeing her chance, moved her index finger to the trigger.
Now completely focused, Lin Jingjing felt as if the mutant beast’s flight had slowed to a crawl. She was keenly aware of every detail—the humidity in the air, the direction of the wind.
As the mutant beast flapped its wings and moved forward, Lin Jingjing squeezed the trigger.
The heavy sniper rifle fired. The recoil from the stock sent a sharp pain through Lin Jingjing’s shoulder.
Before she could even wince from the pain, the mutant beast’s head was blown apart by her shot. A spray of red blood and brain matter exploded in mid-air.
The mutant beast’s corpse then plummeted straight to the ground, hitting it with a tremendous THUD that must have left a large crater.
The pilot of the blue Mecha heard the impact and hurriedly pulled up the recent combat playback.
He discovered that someone had actually used a rifle to headshot an incredibly fast Red winged Beast!
’That accuracy... so incredible!’
Red winged Beasts, as their name implied, were fast. They flew at the speed of a bullet.
They were so fast they were almost invisible to the naked eye, which was why they always used high-speed Mechas and robots to hunt them.
Even the bombs used to take them down were the auto-targeting kind.
To think someone had headshot one with just a rifle... It was unbelievably impressive, and shocking!
’If I make it out of this alive, I have to find out who that expert is and thank them for saving my life.’
Lin Jingjing didn’t feel any joy from killing one mutant beast. She rallied her focus and aimed at the next one.
There had been six Red winged Beasts in total. Lin Jingjing had killed one, leaving five.
"Sister Lin!" Shi Feng’s voice rang in her ear. "I’ve found the white mutant beast!"
"It’s behind the rocks on the left side, surrounded by Steel Beasts."
Hearing Shi Feng’s report, Lin Jingjing didn’t reply immediately. Her eyes remained fixed on the impossibly fast mutant beast in the air.
As she concentrated, the Red winged Beast’s incredible speed seemed to slow down once more.
Lin Jingjing aimed for its head and squeezed the trigger again.
Another hit. Another headshot.
After taking the shot, Lin Jingjing immediately replied, "Has it been hiding behind that rock the whole time?"
"Yes, it’s been behind the rock the whole time. It hasn’t moved," Shi Feng answered hurriedly.
Lin Jingjing quickly sat up, then detached her scope to use it as a monocular.
She looked toward the location Shi Feng had described and, sure enough, saw the mutant beast.
It was standing there, behind a large boulder.
But it was taller than the rock, so its ears were sticking out.
It was completely surrounded by Steel Beasts—a particularly tough type of mutant beast.
From this distance, Lin Jingjing wasn’t sure if she could make the shot.
"I see it," Lin Jingjing responded. "Keep observing and report the situation to the others."
"Mo Xuan, Gu Kaiwen, you two try firing in that direction. See if you can hit it."
"Roger," the three of them replied.
Just then, Feng He’s panicked, gasping voice came over the comms. "I’ve been spotted by the mutant beasts!"
His voice was laced with terror. "I don’t know how they did it, but a whole bunch of mutant beasts just came out from behind me!"
