Chapter 24: Resisting the Mutant Beast Horde
Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Resisting the Mutant Beast Horde
Looking down from high above, they saw the great trees beneath the rolling green mountains, illuminated by luminous orbs.
The trees, stretching as far as the eye could see, cloaked the entire mountain in mystery.
A light mist partially obscured the path ahead, but it didn’t impede their progress in the slightest.
"These trees must have been alive for a very long time."
"Every single one has grown into a towering ancient tree."
Shi Feng remarked with a sigh, holding onto Gu Wenkai’s waist as he looked down below.
It was no wonder the First Corps was giving its all to fight off these mutant beasts; some of these trees had stood the test of time, leaving their mark on history.
Upon arriving, they asked around and learned that the mutant beasts at the front had launched another massive assault.
"Take the food to the front lines," the local logistics captain said. "They probably haven’t eaten, either."
"Where are they fighting?" Lin Jingjing nodded, but they still needed directions.
After the logistics captain gave them directions, all five of them put on the protective suits he kindly provided.
"Go on, and be careful," the logistics captain said, waving them off once he saw they were all suited up.
The five of them reached the front lines in ten minutes. Even before they fully entered the war zone, they were assaulted by the thick stench of blood and piercing roars.
Not only that, but there were also the sounds of explosions, gunfire, fists hitting flesh, furious shouts, people coughing up blood, flesh being torn, and agonizing screams...
Lin Jingjing led the way, listening to the incessant sounds that reached her ears.
The noise was immense, so loud it felt as if it could swallow everyone whole.
Hearing an explosion in the sky, the five of them looked up in unison.
They saw mechas in the sky, firing various shells to shoot down winged mutant beasts. The expressions on their faces turned grave as they watched.
They had just witnessed a terrifying scene: a red Mecha had been surrounded by several mutant beasts.
Its nearby allies tried to help, but they were pinned down themselves.
The five of them could only watch helplessly as the flying mutant beasts used their sharp teeth to rip the sturdy Mecha apart.
The moment the pilot inside the cockpit was exposed, a flying mutant beast bit off their upper body in a single crunch.
Blood splattered everywhere, and a fine crimson mist began to fall from the sky.
When it hit her face, Lin Jingjing wiped it away with her hand and saw that it was blood. The cold touch made her stomach churn.
The Nutrient Liquid she had drunk earlier threatened to come back up.
The pilot’s intestines were dangling from their lower torso, swaying with the wind. The sight was utterly nauseating.
All five of them were horrified by the scene. There was absolutely no chance of survival.
It was at this moment that the five of them truly understood what the mutant beasts were.
They were vicious and bloodthirsty. Falling into their clutches meant certain death.
And they finally understood the true nature of the Empire’s enemy.
Her face dark, Lin Jingjing turned to the four behind her. "On your guard. Stay alert and follow me."
Then, she looked at Gu Wenkai. "You take the rear." Her gaze shifted to Mo Xuan, who stood beside Feng He. "You, in the middle."
The moment Lin Jingjing spoke, the others complied without a word.
Fortunately, they were in a designated safe zone. They proceeded with caution until they could see the soldiers fighting on the front line, only then letting out a collective sigh of relief.
A glance into the distance revealed a shocking sight: a dense, writhing mass of mutant beasts. The Single Pilot Mechas were holding the front line, allowing the soldiers behind them to fire their high-pressure guns and cannons forward.
They were determined not to let a single mutant beast break through their line of defense.
Leading the troops against this wave of mutant beasts were He Shian and Gu Fei.
The man and woman were commanding from the rear. Inside the cramped control room, they sat watching the situation on the front line unfold.
Gu Fei paced back and forth, her eyes filled with agitation.
"This wave of mutant beasts is ferocious. We might not be able to hold them back." Gu Fei’s agitation grew as she stared at the battle unfolding on the large blue screen.
Watching the death toll climb, Gu Fei kicked the leg of a chair. "Call for reinforcements, now! We can’t hold on like this!"
Gu Shi’an’s ice-blue eyes remained fixed on the large screen. He slowly stood up. "The two of us will go."
"We’re not the only location on B6 Star under invasion. Other places are fighting desperately as well."
Gu Fei thought of the other strongholds being swarmed by mutant beasts and let out a long sigh.
"Let’s go." Gu Fei reached up, her hand touching the cyan gemstone on her collar. It was her Mecha, the comrade that would soon fight by her side.
"Mm," Gu Shi’an acknowledged.
The moment they stepped out of the tent, they saw Lin Jingjing and her group.
In an instant, grave expressions appeared on both their faces. Gu Fei, in particular, strode forward, grabbed Lin Jingjing by the collar, and demanded harshly, "Who told you to come here?!"
"Don’t you know how dangerous it is here?!"
"A bunch of Grade D trash like you running out here is just a death wish!"
As Gu Fei yelled at her from point-blank range, spit flecked Lin Jingjing’s face.
She reached out and grabbed Gu Fei’s wrist. "The logistics captain ordered us to bring you food."
After saying that, she looked around, and seeing nowhere to put anything, asked, "Where should we set up the food?"
’This is insane!’
’That logistics captain must be insane, sending them here to deliver food.’
’If we’re hungry, can’t we just drink Nutrient Liquid?!’
’They just showed up with thin protective suits and old F-460 rifles on their backs.’
’The fact they made it here in one piece is pure, dumb luck.’
’And now she’s asking where to set up the food? She can set it on my damn head for all I care!’
Gu Fei kept her grip on Lin Jingjing’s collar and threw her into the tent. Then she roared at the other four, who were frozen in shock, "You four, get in there too!"
Gu Shi’an felt a headache coming on. He never expected these Grade D logistics personnel to actually come here.
"Stay inside, and don’t come out no matter what happens!" Gu Fei added. The tent was protected by an Energy Shield, so the mutant beasts couldn’t get through.
For the moment, they were safe inside.
But Lin Jingjing was stubborn. She was determined to complete the mission Captain Li had given her.
Once inside the tent, she straightened her collar and asked again, "Where do we need to set up the food?"
He Shian and Gu Fei fell silent. ’At a time like this, she’s still worried about the damn food!’
’They could die at any moment!’
Lin Jingjing could see they were speechless, so she added, "This is the mission Captain Li gave us. We’ll leave as soon as it’s complete."
’That Captain Li... When I get back, I’m going to beat the hell out of him!’
’He has no ability to read the situation!’
’Sending these people over is no different from sending them to their deaths!’

A nearby screen suddenly flashed red, its light jarringly bright in the dim tent.
It instantly drew everyone’s gaze. Then, the mechanical voice sounded again.
