Chapter 18: The Worst of the Worst
Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Worst of the Worst
They lay in bed until afternoon, when the other two finally woke up.
Lin Jingjing looked at them and asked, "Are you guys okay?"
The two of them checked themselves over, and Feng He even placed a hand on her wrist.
After taking his pulse, he shook his head. "No, I feel fine."
"Alright then, let’s check out," Lin Jingjing said, standing up.
Since they hadn’t eaten anything, the three of them went straight to the cafeteria after leaving the infirmary.
The cafeteria’s service windows were all closed, and the three of them had no Star Coins, so their only option was to go to the free Nutrient Liquid station and grab a bottle each.
After getting their Nutrient Liquid, they sat down in a corner of the cafeteria.
After the three of them quietly finished their Nutrient Liquid, it was Lin Jingjing who broke the silence. "We have to go water the vegetable garden later."
At her words, the other two grew even more silent.
’Work, right after getting out of the infirmary?’
’Even if you treat us like cattle, you can’t exploit us like this!’
’At least give a beast of burden a break!’
"The vegetable garden isn’t big. It’ll be watered in no time," Lin Jingjing said reassuringly.
Shi Feng piped up, "Heh... yeah, not big. Just six hundred acres."
Six hundred acres!
And she calls that ’not big’!
Feng He was about to go crazy. ’Why does it feel like there’s even more work here in the logistics department?’
’And it’s all manual labor.’
’You really can’t finish it without a certain level of stamina.’
The three of them lowered their heads and let out a long sigh in unison, "Sigh—"
"Just think of it as training," Lin Jingjing continued to console them.
"What army starts its training by watering a six-hundred-acre vegetable field?" Feng He wasn’t buying it and retorted.
He then added, "Even special forces don’t train like this."
"It’d be great if Brother Gu and the others were here. They’re the strongest," Shi Feng lamented, fiddling with the empty bottle in his hand.
"Yeah, if only they could join us," Feng He mumbled, slumping over the table with a nod.
Lin Jingjing didn’t say anything, just propped her chin on her hand and watched them, lost in her own thoughts.
’If those two were here, we’d definitely save a lot of time.’
"Let’s go. Time is short and the task is big. The sooner we start, the sooner we finish," Lin Jingjing said, getting up and beckoning to the other two.
The three of them left the cafeteria and headed straight for the vegetable garden, complaining the whole way that Captain Li wasn’t human for not assigning them more people.
While they were still complaining about being short-handed, Captain Li was in his office, having just launched Star Soul to play a round, when he was interrupted by a knock at the door.
’It’s this late. Who’d be knocking on my door?’
’I already sent those three little good-for-nothings to water the vegetable garden. Six hundred acres. That’ll wear them out and keep them from causing trouble all day.’
"Come in."
With permission granted, the door was pushed open, and four people trooped in.
"What is it?" Looking at the four of them, Captain Li’s heart suddenly sank, but he forced himself to remain calm and ask.
The hand holding the Controller began to tremble slightly.
The last time this happened, he’d also been about to play a game when he was forced to go to the medical department and request a person with Grade D spiritual power. Now, just as he was about to play again, these people showed up.
’This definitely can’t be good.’
"Your logistics department is understaffed, so I brought you some help." The speaker was a man in a dark green military uniform. He wore a hat and had a smile on his face. He then stepped to the side.
He revealed the two people behind him for Captain Li to see. The man pointed to them and said with a smile, "This one’s Grade D, and this one is too. I guarantee they’ll get everything in your logistics department in order."
’Heh heh...’
Captain Li was speechless. ’They really treat this place like a garbage dump!’
’Shoving any old piece of trash in here!’
"Don’t want ’em. Take them away," he said with a wave of his hand, rejecting them outright.
To put an end to this once and for all, Captain Li burned his bridges, outright rejecting anyone who might be sent to the logistics department in the future.
Captain Li said with a dark expression, "My logistics department doesn’t want any Spiritual Ability Users, regardless of grade."
"Just these two. If you take them, we won’t send any more." The speaker was a woman, her face plastered with a somewhat fawning smile.
’Just these two left to meet this month’s recruitment quota.’
’Then I can finally relax.’
’So I have to stuff these two in here.’
"Are you sure?" Captain Li asked back.
"I’m sure!" the woman nodded emphatically.
Captain Li looked at their frail appearances, and his heart softened in the end.
But even if his heart had softened, he couldn’t possibly show it. He still had to be stubborn and let loose a few venomous remarks.
"Fine. These are the last two. If you come again, I’ll kill you."
He then complained, "Are you treating my department like a junkyard or what? Every year you dump your trash here, and none of this trash even survives for two years."
His sharp gaze fell on the two newcomers. After looking them up and down, he continued, dissatisfied, "Even more useless than the last three."
"The trash of the trash."
"Whatever. What can I do, since this place is a garbage dump? I suppose I’ll have to take them."
Hearing Captain Li’s words, the two clenched their fists in anger.
In their past lives, they had been Kings among soldiers, but now they were being belittled like this by some useless-looking, stubble-faced uncle.
But they quickly accepted their current reality. They were no longer Kings among soldiers; they were just ants on the verge of starvation.
’It’s better to just obediently accept the arrangements. It’s good enough just to survive.’
With the recruits successfully stuffed into the department, the two recruiters didn’t linger and left immediately.
Soon, only the three of them were left in the office. The two newcomers stood in place, looking exceptionally thin.
Their cheeks were sunken, a clear sign of a long-term lack of food and nutrition.
They were so thin and weak, it looked as if a gust of wind could blow them away.
Due to the mutant beast tide, food and drink on all of B6 Star were incredibly scarce.
Shops and the like were all closed, and the streets were deserted.
Even suppliers making deliveries to B6 Star were few and far between. As a result, anyone on B6 Star who could run had already run, leaving only the old, weak, sick, and disabled, or those without the money to leave.
These old, weak, sick, and disabled were not under the protection of the strong. After all, the law of the jungle was carved into the very bones of every powerful person.
Having just finished claiming his in-game rewards, Captain Li couldn’t stand it anymore.
’How long has it been since these two showered? The sour stench is filling my entire office.’
"What are your names?" Captain Li asked, his face dark.
"My name is Gu Kaiwen."
"I’m Mo Xuan."
After they each stated their names, Captain Li nodded. "You can get lost now. Go to the bathhouse and wash up. You reek of sour sweat. It’s disgusting."
As he spoke, he pulled open a nearby drawer and took out two Star Rings.
"Enter your identity information into them. Your dorm is 301. Someone’s already living in there."
The two took the Star Rings and left the office. Standing outside the door, they looked at the Star Rings and let out a collective sigh of relief.
’That Captain Li has a truly venomous tongue, but he’s also truly kind.’
"Let’s go," Mo Xuan said after putting on his Star Ring.
Gu Kaiwen nodded, and the two of them left, shoulder to shoulder.
